I can recall watching the miniseries when I was in high school and I was impressed by Henry Cele's portrayal of Shaka even then. I recently happened upon this clip and have been reminded why. I'm studying the Mfecane and Mfecane theory of my own accord for an elective history subject at university atm. There certainly are a lot of different 'versions' of Shaka being promoted. From what I have learned so far, I believe any interpretation of him Needs to be considered contextually. He was certainly brave, resourceful and innovative, just as he was ruthless and cruel. As well as a great warrior, he was also a great diplomat. He was a man of his times and identity is complex, and, challenging, if some semblance of accuracy is to be obtained.

I am a Zulu & I live in the Zulu KINGdom its called "KwaZulu-Natal" now its a province in SOuth africa, if you really want to know shaka you should visit the zulu kingdom & talk to old men &women here they know true stories about the legendary warrior king shaka. the books you read exaggerate & lie about the character of shaka they were written by europeans who didnt care about the truth but only wanted their books sold.... you can visit the zulu royal palaces.... & they are great cities like durban & richards bay

Shaka was very literal. He didn't understand or should I say, speak in metaphors. He was able to understand things as they are and metaphoric language just made it look like the person was lying, so he only spoke as things were. Just like he didn't like glasses looking through Farewell's glasses. He didn't understand prescription lenses, he just knew that Farewell's glasses gave him a false look of how the world is, so he saw them as deceptive. Illusions.

It's cool getting the historical perspective of the descendants of those who are portrayed here. I'm reading here many disagreements with this scene in its historical accuracy as some say Europeans never helped Shaka and some say Europeans exploited tribal wars to gain an advantage. I'm also hearing of locals complaining of the land that Shaka gave away to the British. Even in this movie his own closet generals questioned him on this, warning that the White men where only using him for gain.

@QuasarIceMage Actually, they had smelting, how do you think they made their spears. They somehow learnt metal working when they still stayed in the area around Nigeria, perhaps traders from Romans or Vikings who know. The metal working allowed them to chop down trees and expand and colonise the rest of Africa. They beat the white man to South Africa by a couple of hunderd years. Poor Khoi San, squashed between the White man expanisiona and the Bantu expansion.

mark mooroolbark not true. Shaka may have been a conqueror, but he was a unifier as well. He’s more akin to Philip II of Macedon in those respects. Both men conquered foreign lands and peoples, however they also united their people, for Philip it was the Greeks, Shaka it was the Zulus. Imperialism or Neo-Colonialism as you’re thinking of it was a distinct phenomenon of late 19th & 20th Century Europe, the only other thing close to it would be the Spanish conquest of Central America & western South America in the 16th Century. The earlier wave of colonialism in the 16th-early 19th Centuries was mainly caused by social and economic factors in Europe rather than the Nationalistic fervor and Racism that fueled Neocolonialism. Imperialism in the way Shaka did it is not unique to Europe, every continent, even Oceania, has had at least one empire form on it. Neocolonialism however is distinctly a European phenomenon.

@@charlesbrooks94 Cetowaya also massacred thousands of men , women and children to gain power just like Shaka. The only reason Shaka didn't venture overseas is because he didn't have the technology or fire power to do so. Do you think any power hungry dictator would turn their back on even more wealth and power if they had the capacity to take it? The Europeans were colonialists because they had the technology and military power required to achieve success. They were not morally inferior to or more cruel than the rulers of African countries.

Zwide was in control of all the tribes in the North as he plans to invade the South to conquer Dingiswayo empire. Zwide Mother does a ritual by cutting a piece of skin off mzilikazi which she had control one of Dingiswayo maids that beheaded Dingiswayo too. mzilikazi elapsed after zwdie mother passes out from the ritual he made his way to tell shaka that zwide army was 25.000 strong which he want revenge his fathers death. shaka takes over Dingiswayo armies which add to his which was 9.000 warriors. they show little of shaka first battle with zwide in the hill watching shaka impi running to his first warriors zwide see that his warriors were no match which led to a retreat. Shaka army moves to Zwide capital killing the few warriors guarding Zwide mother is captured brought to shaka which he says what good is your magic know which she spits at him. shaka says mzilikazi which he picks up branches in fire pit and slowy moves towards the which doctor to set her on fire which mzilikazi was never mention again after. then Finn says while writing in the book we would march with the Zulu warriors to face a stronger Zwide which goes to this scene.

Shaka believed that he was all powerful. Dutch settlers were no match for Shaka's large armies, so he probably initially thought that the British were no threat and would easily serve him. Once he saw that the gun was superior to the spear, he tried to form an alliance to avoid being colonized. Shaka had land to burn so giving the Brits land was a small investment in perserving Zulu hegemeny. He later saw that his efforts would do nothing so Zulus thereafter pressed up against the Brits.

Shaka was trying to unite the other tribes because he knew they couldn't defeat the Africans if all tribes were united. Shaka was trying to bring all tribes under one umbrella. The whites knew they didn't want to try Shaka. The war with the whites didn't start until after Shaka died. And the whites only won because they united. The Dutch and the British hated each other. The Boers war is the name of their conflict in today's South Africa. But they united to defeat the zulus. A lesson Africans haven't learned yet. UNITY to defeat a common enemy. Xhosa people were the first ones to fight with the whites. If the Xhosa and Zulu tribes had united , history would be different. And the Xohsa tribe alone was given them the business even though they were at a disadvantage because of weaponry. It shows you that tactics is very important in war.

The European failed to tell real truth if it was not for Hyrum and his invention of machine gun African history would be different and no apartheid in South Africa. The entire shortcoming of the African nation was believing in the God of men not the God of Creation. King Leopold II Livingston and this colonial group would have never invaded without the rifle and mastery of fire arms....

I love how Shaka was always suspicious of his British associates. Half trusting them but holding back from giving Farewel and the other British soldiers. Unfortunately Nandi's death was where his suspicious and cautious nature came unstuck which would have probably served him at precisely that moment.

You mean how the lightning fast Zulus, despite outnumbering British forces 3.5 to 1, inflicted only 13 casualties on the British troops to the loss of their entire army of 15,000 warriors at Ulundi? The war lasted a whopping FIVE MONTHS, and the Zulu only ever won one battle. TRUE military genius is Alexander the Great and Sun Tsu that both defeated far larger armies and invented advanced strategy both in combat, logistics, and troop maneuvers, far more than Shaka's simple wave attack idea.

History tells us that the only African nation that was not defeated by European armies is Ethiopia. And what did the Ethiopian have , that no other African army had ? Oh...I'm glad you ask. The answer ....an abundance of manpower , rifles and canons. With these weapons they crushed Italian Invaders and remained independent. The weapons were received from Russia. If other African nations had the same , its possible the result would've been the same. Nevertheless , I admire anyone , anywhere who is brave enough to defend there home at any cost. Even if their defenses are superior or inferior! I despise bullies who attack their fellow man , not to stop genocide , or protect the nations resources , but simply take...because they can.
