Make funny faces and smile when someone says something that made other people laugh. If someone asks you a question just answer it. Occasionally ask if someone is okay, or if they are doing well, or if they need help with something. When at lunch or break, sit in their area as opposed to away from their area. Boom, coworker friends. Just remember to never talk about politics, religion, or the great pumpkin.

The way Alan speaks makes it sound as if sometimes he has to catch himself and make sure it's not quite correctly pronounced. He notably drops it when he is genuinely taken a back. He wants you to notice his weird speech. This is a man who is keeping your eye on one hand waving, so you don't pay attention to what the other hand is doing.
