Just a word on the FODMAP diet - it is not meant to be a permanent diet where you cut out all of those foods forever. It’s an elimination and reintroduction diet. As in you cut everything on the list out and then gradually reintroduce “higher” FODMAP foods to see which trigger your symptoms. Please don’t deprive yourself forevermore!

I’m sooo happy that someone is finally talking about this. I started having stomach pains, indigestion, bloating, diarrhea etc. and I had to cut a lot of food and supplements out of my diet. I’ve learned that protein powder is not only harsh on your stomach but bad for your kidneys 😮 I loved seeing how you changed your diet and just the reality to these kind of health situations.

Do you ever have creatine or whey protein powder? That seems like the first obvious place to start, especially if you can’t tolerate dairy as it can really wreak havoc on the gut! I’m dairy free & use pea protein & that helps lots!! ❤

Just an fyi shallots are definitely high fodmap as it has fructans. They say you can have the green parts of spring onions (green onions/scallions), chives, or the green leaves of leeks on low fodmap.❤ As a few other mentioned whey protein powder has dairy in it as whey is obtained from milk so it’s probably not great for lactose intolerance. 😅 Figuring out gut issues is such a journey. I still struggle sigh. 😢 wish you lots of success in resetting your tummy! ❤

Allana, I hate to break it to you but you're not doing the low FODMAP diet. 1) absolutely no garlic powder or onions (even pickled and no shallots), 2) you need to eat strict low FODMAP (no "treats") for 2-6 weeks or until your symptoms subside, then 3) you do a reintroduction phase with each food you've eliminated (for 3 days per food at increasing concentration, and have to wait until symptoms subside again to do the next reintroduction), and finally 4) you should be doing this under the guidance of a GI doctor. Unfortunately, you can't figure out what the issue is in just a week. I had to do months of the diet and reintroduction, and it was very hard, especially as a vegetarian.

"I am killing Dan softly every single day" cracked me up. Thank you for being so real and relatable! 😂We have recently started eating this dish for dinner/lunch: quinoa (seasoned to your preference, we cook it with salt, pepper, turmeric and vegetable broth) mixed with chicken (also, marinated to your preference), onion, green peas, carrots and fresh chives on top. Just cook the quinoa separately, cook the rest on a pan and finally mix it all together. It is so tasty, yet it gives you that great healthy feeling, plus it is not expensive! 👌🏻

As a nutritionist I’m so happy to see your focus on gut health! Ignoring can definitely lead to larger imbalances down the road. Just a note - you may want to get tested for SIBO. As with dairy for some people, sugar alcohols such as erythritol, xylitol and the other “ols” cause many people digestive distress and cause microflora imbalance. Pesticides can also contribute to microflora imbalance so taking steps there wherever possible can be helpful (and support the environment!). It’s possible that when you start effectively digesting legumes such as lentils again with proper preparation (soaking and pressure cooking helps here) you’ll know things are back on track gut-wise.

I would definitely be cutting out ultra processed foods (UPFs) / drinks as a high priority - especially stuff like protein drinks, gorilla / creatine drinks, any energy drinks / sugar free replacements. These will be wreaking havoc on your stomach!

Please consult with both a gastroenterologist and a dietician. GI issues are very complicated and should not be self-diagnosed or treated. Excess gas can be a symptom of bigger issues that may need tests such as colonoscopy etc to properly look at. Please, I had the same issue for several years and finally saw both a Gastro and a Dietician and got properly diagnosed and treated. 🙏🏻 my diet and gut are now balanced after lots of dedicated work tweaking alongside my team and the relief is wonderful!

I totally get wanting flavorful food - it just makes eating food so much more enjoyable (speaking as a restaurant owner and partner of a chef😉). I sometimes make a pesto with fresh herbs or something chimichurri style (obviously avoiding the items your shouldn’t). That can be super flavorful and tasty. You can add the pesto/chimichurri in mayos, cottage cheese, lactose free sour cream to create a flavor bomb to add to a dish! It’s a great meal prep to add into the routine. It can also be portioned and frozen for an even more convenient meal prep!

I’m currently doing the AIP diet which is the TRUEST of gut resets. I’m doing it to figure out which food makes my endometriosis flare but it would equally work for someone trying to figure out what makes their IBS flare. I’ve tried the low FODMAP diet but still had a relatively unpredictable stomach afterwards. But the AIP diet is different because you fully strip your diet to the bare minimum for a month and slowly reintroduce “irritant” foods every 3 days after that first elimination month. That way you’ll KNOW which food it is that’s hurting your tummy. Definitely worth trying that!

Sometimes I just have a breakfast of cantaloupe, raspberries or blackberries or blueberries, a stick of cheese, and about a quarter cup of cashews or macadamia nuts. That helps me out and keeps me full when I don’t have time for eggs. Other times I just skipped breakfast and have a big salad with some protein for lunch. Then protein and steamed vegetables for supper and then done for the evening. I have lost 52 pounds since mid October and feel really energized. I try to walk every day, but really hope to learn how to do better weight training. Your commitment to working out is inspiring.

I did the low FODMAP/SIBO diet for years and it didn’t help me. It can definitely help symptoms, but it’s not a long term solution and it doesn’t address the underlying cause. Digestive issues can be caused by stress whether you’re conscious of it or not. When your nervous system is dysregulated, your body puts digestion at a low priority. Doing nervous system work is something you may want to consider. Regardless of your gut, it’s good for your overall health! Once you improve your digestion, you can incorporate probiotic foods as a regular part of your diet.

I have had problems with my gut for over 15 years but the worst problems I had were when I was consuming a lot of sweetener, either sweetener I added myself or sweetener in things like protein powder and fizzy drinks. Definitely cut out sweetener! Since I started having children, my gut problems have improved so much though. In fact, I was very lactose intolerant until I conceived my second child and then I could suddenly have all dairy with no problems (this is a real thing! Babies transfer cells in the womb to the mother which helps to repair damaged parts of your body).

Would love, love, love to try a diet like this one day. Definitely lacking in motivation and funds and mental capacity. But these results are super motivating

The bean paste surely isn’t helping the gas situation lol! Also try peppermint capsules, great for gas & general stomach discomfort!

From a fellow lady with an angry tummy- rice was a major culprit for me. Which was a major bummer 😢 because a rice bowl loaded with veg and a protein is my favorite meal. I tried quinoa as an alternative and still had gut issues.

I would love a bit more in depth look at the spring rolls! They looked very tasty.

You athletic greens might be the culprit! My stomach/gut really cannot tolerate greens powders at all and I get similar symptoms that you described

Did anyone notice Lan's comfy-at-home-sweatshirt? I didn't think so. EDM is real life and we're here for it! Try some Beano, you gaseous gal or maybe an enzyme to help with digestion? I'm a fan of sipping a warm ACV drink--it's an acquired taste, but it's a relief for me. I've packed my L & D for years and find having dedicated containers helps. Skipping the peanut sauce is not an option! xo

Allana, I hope you figure out what works for you to feel better! One suggestion (which you probably already know): if you’re trying to figure out if a certain food or foods are affecting you, when you first remove them, don’t add in any new foods that you don’t normally eat. Adding (or substituting) a food you don’t normally eat could confuse your results. For instance, if you still don’t feel well, it could now be the new food(s) causing problems, meanwhile, removing the problem food may have helped, but now you’ll have no way of knowing that. Feel better! ❤️🙏🏻

As someone with sensitivity to both fodmaps and dairy, I find whey protein is terrible on the gut!

I don’t have either of those sensitivities and still find almost all protein powder really hard to digest. I think the processing and additives just really don’t agree with some folks’ bellies! It sucks because it’s so convenient but the digestive downfall was never worth it to me!

Just an idea...have you tried not taking creatine for a couple of days? For some reason creatine gives me and many others gas. I simply cannot take it!
