When you were talking about the "home girl era" (and phrasing it as "hot girl winter"), it made me realize it's all about romanticizing the little, maybe not-so-exciting things about life that reframes them into something special and makes the hard parts (like waking up early, or committing to cleaning the kitchen every night) easier.

Try to freeze your compost stuff! Then put the bowl in hot water to thaw it a bit to slid out of the bowl like ice from an ice cube tray. Then it doesnt get maggots or stink. It was a game changer once we started doing this. I can so appreciate your statement about feeling lucky to have a kitchen to clean and the rest of the sentiments expressed. Those meals looked so tasty.

My husband made a very simple wooden rectangular compost bin with a solid piece of wood dividing it into two sections. No lid. One side rots for a whole year (from one spring to the next) while we add new scraps to the other side for one year. We rotate yearly which side rots (doesn’t get new scraps) and which side gets new scraps. We live in Alberta so we can’t stir the compost in the winter because it’s frozen, but in the summer we add water (to the side that just sits and composts for a year) and stir it a few times with a pitch fork to mix it up. We have been doing this for 23 years and we have a great summer garden which produces really beautiful and tasty and vegetables. I also add this compost to my flower beds and pots. Thanks for your video today! 🙂

I live in Vancouver too and I just use paper grocery bags (like the ones from whole foods) for my compost and it works great! I put a paper egg carton in the bottom of the bag so the bag doesn’t get soggy on the bottom and break. And then when it’s about 1/2-3/4 full I roll the top and dispose of it in the bin. Definitely helps with the maggot problem and the paper composts perfectly and no issue at pick up time. i have actually visited the industrial compost facility where most of metro vancouvers compost goes to and the “compostable plastic” bags don’t really break down even after going through that state of the art facility! So I think that’s probably why they’re banning them. The compost they make gets used for many purposes like soil amendment for farms or to make potting soil and soil mixtures for landscaping so we don’t want microplastics in there.

I’m more of a worm farm fan than a machine for composting. I’m not sure if it’ll be too cold in Canada for a worm farm, but in Australia they work well if you keep them from overheating in the sun. It takes awhile before the farm builds up enough to go through daily compost but once you’re there they create great nutrients for gardens and indoor plants x

Try egg white French toast! It’s such a yummy protein filled breakfast. I do long fermented sourdough for gut health and I add cinnamon, turmeric, nutmeg and vanilla to my egg whites whisk them up and soak the bread (I do 80g bread 150g egg whites) into the pan pour the remaining egg whites on top and serve! So good with berries!

PLEASE WASH YOUR RICE! There's so many minerals, starches and impurities coated on the grains of rice. Typically we (lived experience from an Asian household) wash the rice until the water is no longer cloudy. Your rice will be so nice, fluffy and better at absorbing flavours from your main dishes too. Love you & your videos! 🫶

Allana! I have the Lomi. I think it's gen one. I would totally buy it again. I garden in the summer and just put all the compost dirt in a bucket until I'm gardening again. I no longer use face towels and use compostable cotton rounds or wipes instead which has helped my irritated/sensitive skin. The only negative is that you need to balance what you put in there (dry/wet etc) or you make sludge lol you still have to clean it sometimes but compared to my friends worm compost (especially if bugs give you the ick) it's less messy, less maintenance and more versatile (can break down dairy meat compostable packaging etc.) like 7.5 out of 10. It's a great first step into countertop composting and I feel much better about how much waste it can divert from landfills (I hope this essay helps 😂)

As a few others have said, freezing your compost! I keep the bin in the freezer so it never stinks or gets fruit flies or maggots. We still use the compostable liner bags but paper bags would likely work for you, and then you also don’t need to defrost it to get the compost out.

Might not be available in Canada, but I recommend Better than Bouillon! Boxed broths are generally made from stock concentrate anyhow, so you are just paying for them to ship the water. Still salty umami deliciousness, but cheaper and stores in the fridge for months!

Love the at home content. I've been meal prepping for years and completely get the eating the same meal on repeat. I meal prep my breakfasts and lunches each week. For my lunch, it's usually some version of grilled or roasted veg plus either grilled or roasted chicken thighs (depending on the time of year). Unless I'm super pressed for time on the weekend, and then it is microwaved frozen veg and chicken (I batch cook a huge amount of chicken every couple of weeks and then freeze individual portions).

Since you have a garden i would do the following when it comes to composting: Choose the corner that is the furthest away from your house and create a compost by throwing everything into a wooden frame. After a while the bottom layer turns into super fertile dirt that you can use to grow your own veggies! I do this all the time and there it is soo exciting to see your own veggies growing!

We line our compost bin with the unbleached brown packaging paper that comes in our deliveries. It helps soak up some of the gunk and seperate the gross from the container so you can dump it out easily whike still being compostable

I cannot recommend enough the electronic composter, they are absolutely amazing and a game changer for my kitchen and my gardening. Not only do we produce like NO trash (realizing now how much of our previous trash was food waste), but we also get super fertile dirt every day. We run ours once a day, toss it in the morning, keep it near our garbage cans and mostly out of sight, oh and our garbage cans don’t produce any odor whatsoever. Not indoor cans or our big outdoor bins. No pests. No flies. Worth the investment by a mile.

Thank you so much for sharing the Allana!! Last year I became a Factor (meal delivery service in the US) girl and it 100%changed my eating habits. Although, it served my health and fitness goals, it did not serve my financial goals. One of my goals for 2024 is to find a way to have delicious, cost friendly, healthy meals at home - 3 x's a day for at least 4 days a week (M-Th). Unfortunately, I don't LOVE eating the same meals everyday and I will probably follow Dejan's method of having everything prepped, but not portioned out so that I can maybe mix and match a little bit. However, I do need to find some good recipes 🙂

We have a lomi, it works great, scraps go straight into it while prepping. I run it once a week. Here’s the real talk part though, it smells like you are cooking garbage while it’s running so I have been taking it out to the garage to run it. The compost that comes out is beautiful and mine is full of crushed egg shells which kept the snails off my veg garden all summer (bonus).

Hi Allana! Firstly I love your channel and content, been a longtime follower. I actually work in the solid waste space (trash, recycling, green waste) and can’t emphasize how important it is for people to utilize their green bins or compost at home, as opposed to putting food scraps or green waste in the garbage. I have been composting at home for the last year and we use a small container on our counter and dump it into our outdoor tumbler (even with the liners I use)! We rotate our tumblers once or twice a week and it’s actually crazy watching it turn into soil. If you wanna know more I would be sooo stoked to connect with you 🫶🏻

I tried the Lomi and it worked pretty well but my issue with it was how loud it was when it runs. Like just the sound of mechanical gears turning for 8 hours. Compost thoughts from a gal who lives in Queensland Australia where it's so humid the air is like soup. 🤢 1. Worm farm. Put it in your yard, will be great for the soil and most importantly, maggot-free. 2. Because you're not going to be trekking out to the worm farm every time you create waste, get a large container with sealed lid and keep it in your fridge. Chuck all the kitchen scraps in there, and when it's full, dump it in the worm farm.
