What helped me with some types of intrusive thoughts is to think of them as someone else's thoughts. Like someone just told us they think that, so now we just know that that thought exists somewhere and that's it

I'm only now, at 43, learning what these thoughts I've been having my entire life are, that I can actually do something about them, and not just continue dealing with them in silence. I thought everyone had them and something was wrong with me because they affected me so much.

@@DocSnipes I made notes and then did a bullet list of quick tips. It's on the wall in my home office. My take away points were *Ignore don't acknowledge *Don't engage, distract *Distract, don't react *Change the channel to positive imagery (I have a very vivid, happy memory from childhood that always makes me giggle) *Pack up your thought, put it in a box *Concentrate on proof of the contrary. I had to use the tips every 20 seconds during the first day but today, I needed the tips much less. Thanks so much Doc. 🙂

I have recognized my violent intrusive thoughts for over a year now. But this video has really help me to notice that the thoughts I thought were my social anxiety and general anxiety disorder might actually also be intrusive. I used to wonder why I was thinking so negatively about myself of I was having a good day and there felt like there was no real reason. And of they were intrusive thoughts it would make sooooo much sense. So thank you this really helped!!! I also really liked the metaphor of the salesperson. Because if I thought of my intrusive thoughts coming from the same brain, the same person as my regular ones it would practically make me do all the things this video says not to do (which were things I had known not to do for a while now) such as over-analyzing, telling myself to stop, paying too much attention to them. So since learning that I tried to label the thoughts I recognized as intrusive to another name referring to them as if I was reffering to a totally different person and that has helped me sooooo much. This video also helped me with a little more of my future possible diagnoses since lately my signs of OCD have been more prominent, and affecting my average life in a way they haven't before so if it continues I might try to be professionally diagnosed or if it's something else. Especially since I hadn't known intrusive thoughts can be a sign of OCD. I do have a question that might seem realllly stupid...do people with ADHD have intrusive thoughts?

@@DocSnipes I have had years of trouble with this issue. What I tell myself that I need to do is to have a few good images, memories and gratitude ready to be turned on in my mind when the bad thoughts come. I love my rock music and have found listening to music has been my best thing to lift me up and accepting that these are just a thought, not to fight them does not work. I really do believe that we live in a world that is accelerating so fast with such things that I never had growing up in the 70s that it’s hard to keep your mind steady So kind of you to reply to me Take care

My job is not challenging and my brain is desensitized and bored with all the podcasts and music and educational entertainment available that I've found so far, so my thoughts are constantly swarming on horrific things and making me feel even more poorly about who or what I must be and it's making me feel so limited that it's keeping me from going for other jobs. Like this job is melting my brain so I can't go find another one. It's like an abusive relationship, it tears you down until you've been brainwashed into thinking that's just who you are. There's some scientific study that basically explained Stockholm syndrome that people eventually stop registering trauma as trauma because the brain eventually decides it takes less energy to accept something is good than to constantly be asking and assessing

Maybe it's both+and? I think that's a really good question and I hadn't thought about it, but it makes me think that maybe we can recognize where the thought is coming from and try to appreciate and respect what it's doing for us, nurture our inner child if we're ready for that and feel safe to do that, but if it's a genuinely endangering or overly harmful thought, then is probably a good time to distract until you're prepared to deal with the thoughts with compassion etc.

At first it sounded to me like Doc. Snipes was saying to do the exact opposite of the ACT therapy concept. But as I continued to listen I realized that wasn’t the case. Acknowledge the thought, realize the thought isn’t the real you nor does it represent “your truth,” (it’s just a thought) and then move on. I know, easier said than done but with practice and mindfulness it gets easier. ❤

I see intrusive thoughts as reaction from trauma. There is trauma stuck in our body that is broadcasting these intrusive worry thought loops. Trauma means that there is ingrained toxic shame belief that appear as reality to us. In my case - this is belief that I must be perfectionist, that I am not allowed to make mistakes, that attracts toxic people who make additional damage - through their toxic shame of my mistakes, flaws and lack of knowledge - which they criticize and nitpick. Soon my own brain will try to evade their toxic criticism by producing intrusive thoughts that will try to make me into being perfecta and without mistakes. Which of course is non functional - and pretty soon I will develop social anxiety and avoidance as an attempt not to make mistakes in my inability to be productive, servile and helpful to others. So I would rather focus on this trauma. The belief and my definitions which are distorted, thwarted, wrong and delusional: what is normal, kind, nice, or rude. It is all modulated to fit original trauma abuse from Complex Trauma childhood - being exposed to unrecognized mentally ill people and thus being invalidated and neglected in times when my persona and personality was being forged and being built. Now I am stuck with unreasonable fantasy ideas what is normal and productive, good nice and what is rude. With wrong definitions I am unable to manage life and communication - and intrusive thoughts are by-products of ingrained toxic shame beliefs.

I didn’t come up with this, but what I normally comfort myself with is that my thoughts are my beliefs. I can think something but not believe it, it takes conscious, deliberate effort to believe something. Thoughts are like streams, you gotta let it flow through you and pick up the good thoughts to integrate into your belief system. All the horrible thoughts? Those aren’t my beliefs, just cause im thinking it doesn’t mean it represents me. Im more than my thoughts
@DocSnipes
@DocSnipes Ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing such a profound and empowering perspective! You’ve captured an essential concept in managing intrusive thoughts-that we are not our thoughts, and just because we think something doesn’t mean we believe it or that it defines us. This aligns beautifully with CBT principles and mindfulness, where the focus is on observing thoughts without judgment and choosing which ones to give weight to. Your analogy of thoughts as streams is a powerful one. By letting them flow and consciously choosing which ones to integrate, you’re practicing a form of cognitive flexibility that strengthens emotional resilience. It’s a skill that takes practice, but it’s incredibly effective in reducing the hold of intrusive or distressing thoughts. If you found this video helpful, please consider sharing it so others can benefit from tools like this. For more in-depth information and strategies, visit DocSnipes.com/Clones

In a way I feel stupid now because some of my thoughts haven't been covered but it's a serious problem...obviously the more energy you give these thoughts the more powerful they become and that's just my brief overview!
@DocSnipes
@DocSnipes Ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your thoughts-it’s not uncommon to feel that way when dealing with something as overwhelming as intrusive thoughts. I want to reassure you that you’re not “stupid” at all. Intrusive thoughts can be incredibly distressing, and they often latch onto our deepest fears or vulnerabilities, which is why they feel so intense. You’re absolutely right: the more energy we give to these thoughts, the stronger they seem to grow. That’s why learning to observe them without attaching meaning or judgment is such a key step in reducing their power. If your specific intrusive thoughts weren’t covered in the video, it doesn’t mean they’re less valid or serious. CBT tools like reframing, mindfulness, and grounding can be adapted to help with any type of intrusive thinking. It’s all about finding the strategies that resonate most with you. If you found the video helpful, please consider sharing it-it might help someone else feel less alone in dealing with their own intrusive thoughts. Are there any particular tools or approaches you’ve tried so far that have helped even a little? I’d love to hear about your experience or provide more tailored suggestions if needed! A positive thought might take the form of an intrusive thought to which our defense mechanisms react, by blocking it. Procrastination is the cumulative effect of this thought mislabelling. It's sneaky and disruptive and in the long term just as dangerous as a true intrusive thought.

I have struggled with undiagnosed ADHD and OCD since I was a young kid. I thought OCD was only causing me to do things like check the door or oven lots of times. I had no idea that it was as deeply rooted in my behaviors and traumas as it is. Hopefully I can find the right recourses to combat my symptoms

Thank you so much for sharing your experience-it takes courage to reflect on how deeply OCD and ADHD may have influenced your behaviors and past experiences. You’re absolutely right that OCD goes beyond the common stereotypes like checking behaviors. It can be deeply intertwined with trauma, anxiety, and patterns of intrusive thoughts or compulsions that aim to create a sense of control or safety. Understanding this connection is a big first step toward healing, and it sounds like you’re ready to find the tools and support you need. Combining strategies for managing ADHD with tools like CBT or ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention) for OCD can help you address symptoms holistically. Trauma-informed approaches may also be valuable if past experiences are contributing to your symptoms. If you found this video helpful, please consider sharing it so others can gain insight into these challenges. For more in-depth tools and resources, visit DocSnipes.com/Clones.

When I have intrusive thoughts, most of the time it’s just searching up something weird and instantly regretting it after
@DocSnipes
@DocSnipes 5 ай бұрын
It sounds like those intrusive thoughts can be really frustrating, especially when they lead to actions you regret. Intrusive thoughts are something many people experience-they’re unwanted, distressing, and can feel out of your control. The important thing to remember is that having these thoughts doesn't define you, and you're not alone in dealing with them. When you notice an intrusive thought coming up, it might help to pause and take a few deep breaths before acting on it. Sometimes, just giving yourself a moment can help you make a different choice. It can also be useful to talk to someone you trust about what you're going through, or even consider speaking with a therapist who can help you find strategies to manage these thoughts more effectively. The fact that you recognize the regret afterward shows that you're self-aware and want to change this pattern, which is a great first step. If you’re interested in more tips and tools on addressing intrusive thoughts, please don’t hesitate to use my AI: allceus.com/AskDocSnipes. With time and the right tools, you can gain more control over these moments.

I do have some time intrusive thought and I thing anyone of us more or less at one stage of hi/her live has had intrusive thoughts. My way to rationale this phenomenon is to make these two assumptions: First thought come always from our mind. Secondly that we couldn't have thought if we had no memories. So my assumption is that intrusive thought are like random memories that at any given circumstance "formulate" in some kind of logic, which might or might have noting to do with present current flow of reasoning/thinking. Indeed if the intrusive thought is inherent or follow up what someone was just thinking it would not be intrusive anymore . A bit like when we dream some time our dreams are logical, some other times are completely irrational. To make a paradox it would be interesting to paradox intrusive thought and the concept of basic hard memories with reasoning, to a computer, whereas hard memories (where intrusive thought come from) is ROM Memory and reasoning is Ram Memory. Indeed the two different type of memories are in constant communication/connected via energy fowl, but to the reader only the flow in one direction makes sense. I suppose there are many way to make paradox with intrusive thought, the scientific ones, the creative artistic one, etc. Possibly what makes us all not go crazy and follow intrusive thought is the respect for other human been and for our selves.

I'm 36 and I had my first anxiety attack last year and in 2024 I had 3 back to back the last one I had last month lasted 3 hours. Now that I know what intrusive thoughts are I'm learning how to control them with my family and friends. The other day I was working on a project and it failed and a thought processed saying myself that I was dumb for not completing it. It hurts cause I know I'm not dumb.

It is also important to separate what you do and your failures from who you are. We all do dumb things and make mistakes or bad choices. It does not mean we are bad or dumb. Additionally, other people may disagree with you or reject an idea or belief you have, but they are rejecting a thought or dislike a behavior, not you.

@DocSnipes
@DocSnipes Ай бұрын
Thank you so much for sharing, and I’m really sorry to hear you’re struggling. When intrusive thoughts stem from past experiences, it’s often because those events left an emotional imprint, and your brain is trying to process or protect you from similar situations. The good news is that you can work toward finding peace and happiness again. One helpful first step is to remind yourself that these thoughts, while distressing, don’t define you or your present reality. A CBT tool you might try is thought challenging: when a past-based intrusive thought comes up, write it down and then ask yourself, “Is this thought helpful right now?” or “What evidence supports this, and what evidence doesn’t?” You could also try grounding techniques to bring yourself back to the present. For example, focus on your surroundings and name five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. This helps remind your brain that you’re safe in the here and now. Working with a therapist might also be really valuable in processing those past experiences and finding tools to manage these thoughts. Healing takes time, but you’re already taking a powerful step by reaching out for help. If this video has been helpful, please consider sharing it-it could help others who feel stuck in their past. And let me know: what’s one small thing that’s brought you a sense of peace or happiness recently? Even the smallest moments matter.

How do I stop persistent revengeful thoughts?
@DocSnipes
@DocSnipes 5 ай бұрын
Persistent revengeful thoughts can be distressing and challenging to manage. Here are some strategies that may help you cope with and reduce these thoughts: 1. Thought Stopping: * Technique: When you notice a revengeful thought, firmly tell yourself "no" and consciously choose to redirect your mind to something else. This could be a mantra, a prayer, or engaging in a different activity. * Practice: This technique takes time and patience to develop. Start small and gradually increase the duration you can stop the intrusive thought. 2. Distraction: * Physical Activities: Engage in physical activities like walking, exercising, or doing household chores to shift your focus away from the intrusive thoughts. * Social Interactions: Call a friend or spend time with loved ones to divert your attention. 3. Unhooking from Thoughts: * Recognize Thoughts as Just Thoughts: Understand that thoughts are merely words and images in your mind. They do not have to result in actions. * Change the Channel: Just like changing a TV channel, redirect your mind to something more positive or neutral. 4. Writing Down Worries: * Thought Box: Write down your revengeful thoughts and place them in a "thought box" or a designated place. This can help you symbolically shelve the thoughts and revisit them later if necessary. 5. Forgiveness and Letting Go: * Empty Chair Technique: Visualize the person you are angry with in an empty chair and express your feelings to them. This can help you process and release some of the anger. * Practice Forgiveness: Engage in thought stopping behaviors and remind yourself of the reasons to forgive and let go of the resentment. 6. Mindfulness and Meditation: * Loving-Kindness Meditation: Practice sending thoughts of hope, health, and healing to others, including those you feel anger towards. This can help shift your mental state to a more positive one. 7. Professional Help: * Therapy: If revengeful thoughts are significantly impacting your quality of life, consider seeking help from a therapist who can provide personalized strategies and support. By implementing these techniques, you can gradually reduce the frequency and intensity of revengeful thoughts, leading to improved mental well-being and focus on more positive aspects of life. Please feel free to share which of the strategies works best for you and, if you’re interested in more tips on handling revengeful thoughts, please don’t hesitate to use my AI: allceus.com/AskDocSnipes.

@DocSnipes
@DocSnipes 4 ай бұрын
Dealing with persistent intrusive thoughts can be challenging, but there are several strategies you can use to manage and reduce their impact. Here are some techniques based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness practices: Thought Stopping: When an intrusive thought arises, firmly tell yourself "No, I'm not going to think about that right now." Replace the thought with a mantra, prayer, or another activity that requires your focus. Distraction: Engage in an activity that requires your full attention. This could be reading a book, exercising, or even narrating your actions out loud to stay grounded in the present moment. Writing Down Thoughts: Write down your intrusive thoughts and place them in a "thought box" or "God box." This physical act of shelving the thought can help you feel like you’ve addressed it and can come back to it later if needed. Mindfulness and Guided Imagery: Practice mindfulness techniques such as three-minute mindfulness exercises, guided imagery, or setting reasonable attention goals. These practices can help you stay focused and calm your mind. Unhooking from Thoughts: Recognize that thoughts are just words and images. You can say to yourself, "I'm having the thought that..." instead of identifying with the thought. This helps create distance between you and the intrusive thought. Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Embrace and accept your negative emotions or pain instead of struggling against them. Focus on living a meaningful life despite these feelings. This approach can help reduce the distress associated with intrusive thoughts. Setting Time Limits: Allow yourself a designated worry period each day. During this time, you can focus on your worries, but once the time is up, redirect your thoughts to other activities. Seeking Professional Help: If intrusive thoughts continue to be overwhelming, consider talking to a therapist who can help you develop personalized strategies to manage them. Conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, or OCD can benefit from professional treatment. Remember, it takes time to develop these skills, so be patient with yourself and start with small steps. If you find these techniques helpful, you can gradually increase the duration and frequency of their practice. Also, I’d be grateful if you were to share what you found most useful from the video. Additionally, if you're interested in more tips on the topic or if you want to explore my video library, you can use my AI: allceus.com/AskDocSnipes.
