Taking Gazan territory to create a security buffer -- well that the problem right there. Seems to me that the end goal of this military action will be to carve out more territory for Israel. Within Israel proper the Palestinian enclaves have been whittled away, piece-by-piece, as new settlements spring up on what once was Palestinian land. I think we can expect that when the shooting stops Israel will be larger than it was before Oct 7th. Hamas may have wanted Israel to respond with brutal force, but Israel knows that and appears to have decided that if they are going to pay a price internationally that they might as well gain land in the process.
