Allelys were tasked with the movement of a British icon known as “the spitfires of the seas”
Motor Torpedo Boat 71 or MTB 71 was a integral part of our defences in World War 2.
At a maximum speed of 39knotts from its twin 1150hp petrol engines this Vosper made 60ft long MTB carries 2 x 18” torpedos in tubes as well as a number of machine guns.
Loading the 18m x 4.7m boat at Fleet Air Museum and delivering it to its new home the Museum of Naval Firepower at Gosport.
The route took us through a 4m width restriction on the A303 so a diversion had to be found.
It was decided the only option was to take the boat through the middle of small Wiltshire town of Mere.
