I have not verified this with a Micro 820, but I have done this with a Micro 810. You can use discover to select the PLC and it will upload the project. You will then get a dialog box informing you that your program is from an earlier software version and ask if you would like to build and re-download it to the controller. It isn't an easy way to switch from run to program mode but it is a slightly easier way to update the PLC. I believe you need the optional LCD displays to switch from Run to Program and back manually

Tim, I am working on a project that is using a micro850 208-lc50-24qwb. we are trying to interface more automation as in robot control with some striking cylinders, i chose to ugrade to the 208-l50e-24qwb to have the implicit class communication capabilities. the new l50e is FW Version 20.011 as per the factory seal but when I change the controller in the ccw enviroment it only gives me the option of version 21. Any advice would be much appreciated

Proceed. It will prompt you if it needs to upgrade the firmware.

You would think there would be a simple mode change available to go into program mode from run mode. Really wish I had kept up with the industry after retirement.

I had a similar issue trying to re-flash a Micro850 and in the process I found that there is a tiny Run-Remote-Program switch on the bottom left corner under the USB port. You can just flip this into program mode to get it out of Remote Run.

Hi Greg. Yes, only the Micro820 doesn't have the mode selector switch. Only the Micro830 and Micro850. You can switch the Micro810 by the LCD but best I can tell with the Micro820 you either have to match the firmware, install an optional LCD, or I've heard you can do it through the Compactflash. We're working on a programming series for the Micro 800 so if you know another way please let me know. Thanks for watching!

​@@TimWilborne Well that is pretty crazy. From a security perspective, I have heard that many people suggest physically leaving the controller in Run mode as a way of limiting potential remote exploitation/change risk. Tough to do without a switch.

@@IAMGregEVA Yes the switch position is a tough call. It "may" make a PLC more secure but it also can really hinder you on a remote system plus there is also such a push not to open enclosure doors for arc flash that it is hard to decide what to do.

I just use the control flash under the tools and update my firmware first then download my program.

Hi, Tim. Many thanks for great video's and tutorials - really helpful and made in a very professional way. Perhaps, you may help with the following: while I was updating f/w of the Micro830 via USB, at the end of the process communication was lost, and since then I have red Fault constantly blinking, and my CCW does not see the controller any longer. Do you have any recommendations how to solve it without sending to AB? Many thanks.

Oh no! Communications blips in firmware upgrades can be tough, but flashing fault lights are usually good. Have you tried connecting over Ethernet or serial?

@@TimWilborne Thanks Tim. No, did not try yet - 830 does not have a built in Ethernet, and perhaps I should try the serial option.

Also does the Micro830 have a sd card? You could try updating the firmware over it. I've actually tried to fault a Micro800 PLC for a video and haven't been successful at it so fortunately / unfortunately I don't have a lot of experience with it.

256 / 5.000 Hello, I had a problem changing the firmware, it was unsuccessful, micro 830 lc48qwb now it is in failure ´´flashing red´´ in linx the plc is seen, but it does not talk, the version that is in it now is 2080lc30 10qwb/a 1.009 what should I do

Probably time to call Rockwell Support. Sounds like it failed in the middle of the upgrade. I don't know if the Micro839 has a SD card slot or not but sometimes that can be a way to recover from it.

Is there an issue with the micro and card slot on the newest firmware version? I’m trying to use the logging function (recipe?) to save values and it is giving back error 15 (which isn’t on datasheet) I’m very confused

I haven't ran into any issues with the newest firmware. Might be time to call Rockwell Support.

Hi, Tim... I like your videos. They have good pace to them and don't get philosophical like some other bloggers do. I'm new to the Micro800, but I'm trying to learn. I have a ton of RS500 experience... but this isn't helping me at all! I have a Micro850 48QBB series A. It still has the original 2.0111 firmware. I can't connect to it via ethernet. But Serial is working. It won't accept a Flash upgrade. MS light is flashing RED. Regular "Fault" too... but probably from no program in it. This unit has probably sat for years. PLEASE HELP!!!

Is the run light on? If it is then you've got to get it out of run mode first.

@@TimWilborne Unlike the 820s... the 850s have a super tiny "Run/Rem/Program Switch". Yes, it is in Program... Im assuming... cause it is toggled to the right. Ill get out my microscope and verify the rightmost position is 'program'. Thank you.

@@TimWilborne Well earlier i couldn't do the method you showed either, import, export, and update firmware are all grayed out even after setting the project version to the same version as the firmware on the PLC. i was going to try a different one but i ran out of time for the day.

Flashing faults are usually a good sign. Does it show up in RsLinx?

Hy Tim, I have Micro850 with version of firmware 9, i download CCW 12 and when i wanna upload from controller ccw ask for firmware update...will i delete existing software with firmware, because i don't have original project and cannot download CCW 9? thanks

Yes it will! Create a new CCW program, select your controller and then you will see where you can select version 6-12, the press the "Select" button.

It's hard to say. Flashing faults are usually recoverable, solid faults are not.
