Allen & Heath's entry level analog mixing consoles, the ZED series are well-built, good-sounding and excellent value for money. Available in frame sizes and feature sets to suit any application, I have recommended them to many a satisfied customer. In this series of videos we take a look at the ZED60-14FX, a 14-channel, 60mm fader mixer with USB audio connectivity.

Thank you for a most comprehensive explanation of this brilliant board. Not only does it cover all my questions but, having wasted many hours on awful KZbin videos (from sound mixers to laying paving flags!), it is by far the best filmed and professionally produced video I have ever seen on KZbin - and that includes many corporate videos! Congratulations!

Well 'old' is a relative term ;) The thing is that there are lots of new advances at the pro level, especially with regards to digital mixers, signal routing and in ear monitoring, but there are still thousands of older systems in use at the club and regional touring level and these books are great for that. Haha yes perhaps I will write a book one day - it's just that my students tell me they don't read books anymore :D
@CrisValk
@CrisValk 6 жыл бұрын
GLB Productions OK I'll start with those two books then :) Too bad,I've read a dozen of books for the studio application already and if it wasn't for them I wouldn't made it to achieve some results...surely the Web is great but very dispersive,the best way of learning is with a well prepared teacher or in lack of that,good books and up-to-date but not forgetting the past though. Another advantage of the books is that you can carry them where you want and have any answers right away without having to turn on the pc or reach for the smartphone and surfing the whole Web. And they're good even for a brief general reexaminatio. This is my opinion of course and can change through the time :D Ps one day I would like to show to you a brief cell video (maybe a private YT vid will work) my first live show as a sound engineer,I wonder what you will think about it...!

This first and second video review series is excellent (always a big A&H fan)!! Thank you!! BTW, most monitors and self-powered speakers use XLR for input; few use the 1/4" option any more. It's a pity this particular mixer is not available any more. You have to purchase used. I have no idea why people would comment to ask for reviews on other mixers. They should PM those requests--or do their own video reviews. ;)

You're welcome Henry, glad the video was helpful! This particular mixer (ZED60-14FX) is most definitely still available, at least in my part of the world. It is also still on the A&H global website, so I'm not sure where your information is coming from. On the 1/4" issue - it is incredibly helpful to have a second set of main outputs, whether for recording or sending to a second set of loudspeakers etc. Most other mixers in this price range from other manufacturers have both XLR and TRS outputs, so it's something that needs to be mentioned.

Nice to hear from you Jerome. One thing to bear in mind is that modern active loudspeaker systems have a great deal of processing already built in and are quite capable of 'taking care of themselves' when it comes sudden transients such as shouts/screams and dropped mics. I recently did a bare bones show with just this mixer and a pair of compressors inserted across the main mix - it sounded perfectly fine, even with really dynamic vocals on the lead singer, I was quite surprised! Of course having compressors on each individual channel gives more control, but I'm starting to believe that one can often do without.

Thanks for the great tutorial. Had a question. I’m looking at this board to get some basic eq before a tape machine. if I wanted to get multiple mono outputs could I do one channel panned left to main left output, one panned right to main right output, one to aux out, and one or two with the “listen” button pressed to the monitor or headphone jack? Would I be able to use these last two panned L and R? This could give me 4 or 5 separate channels.

Very helpful, thanks so much! What I don't get yet is how I can use an external effects unit in addition to the onboard effects. I'm taking this mixer for a test drive and was thinking I could use the aux out (stereo?) into my effects unit (Kaoss Pad KP3+) and then back in on one of the stereo channels or the playback in left and right. What I want to do is be able to send individual channels (or the whole mix) to the KP3 or other effect. Optimally, I would be able to put the wet signal back into the mix without the dry so when filtering for example, only the filtered sound would be heard. I'm not getting this this to work yet and thinking I must be missing something here. Thanks for considering! (my inputs are keyboards, samplers, and microphones)(outputs go to the house and/or to a digital recorder and studio monitors)
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 6 жыл бұрын
The connector to use for this application would be the 'FX out' - you can also use the aux out (if you wanted to use the internal FX engine simultaneously) but that output is pre-fader and thus you would need to set the balance with the aux knobs instead of the faders. These two outputs are both mono so no option for stereo output. Also you cannot send the main mix to either of these outputs. You would then bring the wet signal back into the mixer via one of the stereo channels, or the playback channel.

Great vid! Question: "Output of the FX Bus is fixed at unity' Does this mean that the FX fader should be at unity, therefore mixing the levels of the effects using the indiviual channel strips? OR Sending the individual channels (using FX knob) to the FX and then bringing the 'FX LEVEL' fader up to mix and assume that the Return is already at unity? THANKS!
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 2 жыл бұрын
No, it means that there is no master volume for the signal bus which is fed by the yellow FX knobs on each channel and arrives at the "FX out" socket, unlike the "Aux mix level" knob which is the master volume for the AUX bus. It does not really pertain to the levels going to the internal FX unit. Either of the methods you describe above will work fine :)

Hello Hubert, on that mixer the REC OUT delivers a copy of the main mix that is pre-LR fader, post- LR insert. So it is affected by the individual channel faders but not by the master faders.

IEMs ideally need a pre-fader, stereo auxiliary send, which this mixer does not have. I would suggest using either the AUX out (pre-fader but not stereo) or the MONITOR OUT (stereo but not pre-fader). You could also use the headphones output, if you are running your own sound.

Hi there Dipali. Most IEM systems require a stereo input (left and right) to function effectively. This mixer does not have any stereo aux sends so you need to use either the headphone output, main LR output, record out or monitor out. For your computer, if you do not use the USB input I recommend connecting to one of the stereo channels - do not use a TRS cable to connect to M8 because that is not a stereo input.

@@GLBProductions thanks soooo much! last question... 1. is there an advantage in using a USB input instead of a Left right splitter from my macbook pro? and since our shows get super loud like a DJ show, will I have the headroom on the mixer to go really loud if I use the USB input . @GLBProductions 3 жыл бұрын
I think there is some misunderstanding here about gain vs volume: gain is the level by which a signal must be increased to bring it to line level (around 1 volt) so that the mixer can process it. Volume comes from amplifiers and speakers - what you need is more volume, not more gain! So I suggest that you invest in a louder PA system if you need more volume for your shows. Trying to add more gain on your mixer will only result in distorted, horrible-sounding audio.

@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 2 жыл бұрын
The preamps on this mixer (both mic and line) are designed to be relatively transparent - tonal changes if necessary are done using the EQ controls. So you should be able to connect a CD player to the line inputs and have it sound fine, as long as the channel EQ is set flat, i.e. all knobs at the 12 o'clock position.

Yes - you seem to be referring to what we would term a line level input in the industry, in other words an input that is designed to accept a low impedance source outputting a level around +4dBu or 1.23 volts RMS. If you are this particular about sound quality I would recommend auditioning the mixers in person - that's the only way to ensure that you get the quality that you are after. Use only the channels that do not have a microphone preamp - i.e. 1/4" connectors only, without the XLR.

Yes, in general the aux output would be used to feed stage monitors. Just remember that this is a mono bus, not stereo.

Hey, I'm having trouble recording vocals. My setup is as follows: Mic XLR to Zed, click record, and also click record bus. However, I can't hear my instrumental unless I track it out to the board, which results in a two-track recording with both vocals and the instrumental when I record back into my DAW. My connections are: - Main mix out to the interface - Record out to monitor mixer - Monitor mixer out to interface 1-2 Please help if you can.

I would say make sure that the ST-2 track is NOT assigned to the record bus - this will prevent it from going back into your DAW and being recorded again.

Hello good sir. I have a question and i am hoping you could help me. I have a AnH Zed60 FX14 mixer, plugged into the main mix out are 2 Alto Tx215 powered speakers. Question is, i also have a pair of yamaha passive speakers from my Yamaha Stagepas 400i, can i use that in any way using this mixer? Thank you.
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 5 жыл бұрын
You cannot connect those passive speakers directly to the mixer, you need an amplifier of some kind :) You can use the 'monitor out' or any other output on the mixer to the run a line level signal to the stagepass.

GLB Productions please illuminate me with your knowlegde on this. I still have the mixer of the yamaha stagepas 400i. Basically what i wanted to do is to use the 2 speakers (passive) from the Yam 400i stagepas as monitor speakers with my AnH Zwd60 14FX. Can i use the Yam SP mixer to power up the 2 pass speakers then connect it to the AnH mixer? Sorry if my question is not that clear. I am a newbie. Thanks a lot.
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 5 жыл бұрын
That's exactly right - you would send a monitor signal from the A&H to the stage pass and then use it together with its two passive speakers as your monitors.

Hoping to get some clarity here, bcoz Im getting myself well confused (and moreso after some A&H email ping-pong). I will first mention I am referring to the ZED10 mixer (since I just got one s/hand), but the layout seems very similar (except less ch's and no Int FX) - I want to connect 5 synth to my ZED10, but there are only two ST channels and 4 mono channels. - I want to run an external FX unit....but there are no dedicated FX returns, so what channels to use? - I also want to 'keep' the playback channel free as my USB signal back in from the PC. So it seems I am left with just 4 mono channels and 1 stereo. So, can I connect 3 synths (L/R outputs) to the M12, M34, and ST1 channels ok? Lastly if I ignore the USB and FX return can I simply run 5 synths into M12, M34, ST1, ST2 and utilise the Playback channels also? Lastly can the Main Inserts be used to connect a sub-mixer...? or where should I patch that in? THANKSSSSSS a LOT! :)
@GLBProductions
@GLBProductions 4 жыл бұрын
To answer your questions briefly in order: - You can return an external FX unit into the ST1, ST2 or playback channel, assuming the output of the FX unit is stereo, which most are. - Yes you can connect 3 synths in the way you describe. - Yes you can connect 5 synths in the other way you describe. Bear in mind that connecting a stereo source to two mono channels is not ideal from a control standpoint especially on a mixer with knobs as opposed to faders. - Main inserts cannot be used as a patch point for a sub-mixer without special cabling and/or modifying the mixer's circuitry. You need to run that into an input channel. It seems to me that you may be better served by a slightly larger mixer and/or one with more stereo input channels 😉

The SM58 needed more gain than the AT875R so it's possible that interference in my environment is more noticeable - I didn't do anything special in the edit/export.

That is correct. The concept is that in a recording setup you would connect the main outputs to your recorder and the monitor outs to your studio monitors.

17:45 - One "trick" for a 1/4" main mix output if you need it - plug in a 1/4" plug into the main insert jack until you get the first "click" on the plug. Unbalanced 1/4" output.

This is a possible workaround, however I would never recommend doing this for an important event - much too easy for that plug to come loose or get pushed in all the way and bang no more signal.
