John Heilemann talks with visionary film and television director Allen Hughes about Dear Mama - the sprawling, spellbinding documentary series about the lives and times of hip hop icon Tupac Shakur and his mother, Afeni, a prominent member of the Black Panther Party in the Sixties and Seventies - that Hughes has been working on for much of the past three years. The first episode of Dear Mama premieres on September 15 at the Toronto International Film Festival, with the entire five-part series airing on FX later this year; Hughes's conversation with Heilemann is the first time he has spoken in detail about the project. In this clip, they discuss the hot-eyed feud between hip hop's East Coast and West Coast factions in the Nineties and the still much-debated circumstances surrounding Tupac's murder in Las Vegas in 1996. Listen to the full conversation on the Hell and High Water Podcast, available wherever you get your podcasts!

Pac was more street then Snoop, Pac was raised by the Black Panthers, it doesn't get more street then that, Pac was setup hence why Orlando Anderson was standing waiting on someone, you don't get 6' 3" 250 lb guy walk up to 5' 10" 175 lb pound guy say that's the guy that jumped me for my chain... Bottom line Pac was killed within members of his entourage, he was boxed in with opening of a Cadillac to fire at will on him, the weird thing is apparently everyone knows who killed Pac but no one knows who shot him up at quad studios...

Snoop is 🐍. Wasn't about the beef? Snoop trailer was shot up because biggie went on radio saying I can't believe NY is allowing Pac and doggpound to shoot a vid in our neighbourhood. Pac wasn't there. It was Snoop and doggpound moments later shots fired into the trailer. Snoop was playing both sides against the middle. He was trying to say he Is cool with biggie and puffy yet he was dissing Biggie on stage and unreleased diss recently came out of him dissing Biggie. It's funny, you can tell from the comments that most people hating on this have not watched it, simply because of who made it... this documentary isn't so much about Pac as it is about his relationship with Afeni and how it shaped him and made him the man he was. If you're not watching this simply because it was made by one of Pac's "enemies" then you're missing out on the most interesting and informative docs on Tupac that I've ever seen. Grow up and realize that Pac was still learning too, do you really think if he was still here, he'd still hate the Hughes bros for some movie shit that happened 30 years ago? You don't have to like this documentary or agree with some of the the things said in it, but at least watch it before you judge and criticize

The doc was good however they still put their spin and narrative on it. His sister wasn’t even in it. Wonder why? Because the estate is ran by Tom whalley and sadly most of Tupacs “family” isn’t really blood related so they’ll take whatever check they can to talk about pac. Whalleys production company helped produce the film and of course he’ll receive most of the money from it and not his actual family like his sister and her kids or even mopreme.

I get Hughes hate for making the doc. The doc (so far) doesn’t disparage PAC in any way. It shows more layers to PAC which we never get tired of seeing. It’s maturity, what are you 19? Why are you holding to some forever beef? In fact his fam and friends are supporting the doc. PAC had the brothers beat up and they pressed charges. Do you think they would still be beefing about the fallout? How about we all love PAC and if there was ever an issue we had with him intentionally or unintentionally our love for him supersedes that. Self admittedly, PAC was not perfect.

Tupac was upset when that trailer got shot up and snoop turn around and call biggie his home boy that shit didn't add up, I was pissed with Tupac, he made diss songs and everything then get to New York and cop-out, he shouldve said that in the beginning like Rage did.
