We need to dry our bundle grade wood faster than nature does as our roadside stands are running out. We make a makeshift greenhouse to do that, will it work? We hope so! #firewood #greenhouse #diy #smallbusiness #maine

Phil you need 2 fans one close to the ground where the air is cooler and drier the second fan has to be high as possible they should be wired in series when one pushes the other pulls out, this method will cut your drying time, I'll say it again I have 2 Nyle's from Bangor Maine, I'm a certified dry Klin operator and I'm trying to help you.
@WoodchuckCanuckАй бұрын
Also, on your next drying run, put plastic on the ground so that you are not pulling the moisture from the ground. You could also experiment with orientating the crates 90º so that the air being pulled through the stack is passing by the cut ends of the wood. Pulling air through the stack like you have it now will work ok but the other way will allow more air to flow pass the cut ends, where the majority of the moisture exits the wood.
@WilleysFirewoodАй бұрын
These guys are right on with what I would try as well. Good luck and I hope you get some decent results.
@AllenFamilyFirewoodАй бұрын
So I have one in one end blowing out are you saying put one in the other end blowing in or are you saying have the fans inside blowing it around .
@WoodchuckCanuckАй бұрын
@@AllenFamilyFirewood Nope, not what I said. No fans inside. Or on the input side. I get what you are trying to do, re-create a airflow like that of a greenhouse. The setup you have with the tarp draped over the crates is a good experiment. Only thing I would change is add a tarp to cover the earth then place your crates on that tarp... and, consider rotating the crates 90º. I'd also make the input hole bigger, to closely match the output hole based on the amount of free air space of the output hole where the fan is. The air space of the fan's output (let's say that fan frame is 24x24", equals 576 sq inches) should be matched to the air space on the input side. Meaning the current input opening you have there has to be much bigger that 24x24" because the free air space on the input side are all the little openings between the stacked wood. Another scenario: If the crates were turned 90º from what you have now, the gaps between your stacks are about 2" I think. Crates are 60 inches tall? Two individual crates separated by 2" would give you three columns of air space (2x60x3) = 360 sq inches. Factor in a loosely draped plastic down the sides, and your input air space will just about match your output. Meaning good air flow and your fan won't have to work hard. And one more thing, on the output when the fan is in that square frame, I would gusset the corners to block air flow. Even a piece of cardboard 24x24" the same size as the wooden frame, and cut a circle big for just the fan cage to push air through. If that cage is 20" diameter, then make the cardboard opening about 19" diameter.

2 pallets wide then use cattle panels to make the hoop like house. Greenhouse plastic over that.mine is 60 feet long. Loose stack the wood and leave about two and a half feet from the top. Place 4 by 6 cants along the sides to hold the plastic down. Close the ends about 50 percent with a fan at one end.on a nice sunny days it gets up to 145 with a 18 ince fan running. Been doing it for years.Green split wood about 90 days. Out comes very dry bleached firewood. It is kind of a pain to fill the pallet then place the plastic but the firewood is great. I get a premium price for Soler dryed wood
@AllenFamilyFirewoodАй бұрын
I bet that works great . Good to hear from some one that’s done it and had success. I’m thinking I might do a wood framed greenhouse because I have a sawmill . I need to do it with stacked wood on our pallets because we just don’t have the time to handle wood . Having a tracker makes moving the pallets around very easy and also for dumping them come delivery time . I’m thinking a 10 ft wide by 30 greenhouse would work great . Our half cord pallets are 6 ft wide and 38in deep by 4 ft tall so if we load the greenhouse from the side we should be able to put 4 cord in and still have plenty of air space between the pallets. Thanks again for the comment we love learning from people that have done it .

Hello Phil, stacking slows drying time, loose filling, dry and ventilation my friend 🪵👍🏼🇺🇸

Limited space here and pine for some reason gets a white mold on it real fast if it’s thrown in a big loose pile . The stacking prevents the mold from forming . Loose thrown wood is a lot of extra work for us . Once it’s stacked on a pallet we never touch it again unless we’re bundling it . We’re always moving wood around in the yard or into the shop if it’s raining so we can’t just pile it up . I would like to try some of the half cord bags I’ve seen you guys use to see if the pine will mold in them . Just gota find that perfect set up so we can still move the wood around and not have to handle it a bunch of times .

Great video!!!👍 Like your greenhouse idea and should speed up the drying some . Gotta wonder if an empty tote on the end would hold the plastic off the wood, support most of the plastic for whatever size hole you want to make. Maybe some spring loaded steel clothespin clamps could hold the plastic to the tote. Also you have not cornered the market on cockamamie ideas. I see a cow production methane facility next door to harness fuel. Heck, maybe Karen can insert some pork n beans into your daily meals. Global warming from cow methane could be a side hustle fuel for heating the greenhouse???🤔🤔🤔 Best of luck guys.👍😃

Would be a fun test to do though to see which one got the wood hotter after a day of full sun and the fan on .

Ok, as long as you can get the moisture out, it will work a bit,,,, great initiative. Even if you just build a 3 sided lean to, it will increase the temperature. Even if you build a roof + front side it will roast the wood a bit. If your going to build a kiln, a 40 ft ex refrigerated container works a treat, with a "angus eco orligno" wood fire box

Study study study every video you can on kilns there’s not a lot of info out there on the builds . Trees to firewood has a lot of videos documenting his build and all of his runs with it .

Crawl in and see how long it takes to sweat thru shirt😅😅. Are there any old greenhouses nearby?
@AllenFamilyFirewoodАй бұрын
I could have a greenhouse here but I just don’t have room for one . Hopefully next yr I can contain myself and not put out more stands than I can handle and then I will have plenty of dry wood .

hi there did something like that for many years , i just left the ends open , natural draft , fan should speed things up , is your plastic UV rated is the big question , best to all john

Greenhouses work great for drying wood but I’m not sure this set up is gona do the trick . I just looked on the box and it doesn’t say any thing about uv protected . I’m just hoping we get a couple uses out of it before it’s all ripped up .

Dan from back 40 firewood got a wood green house sent to him from a company to use .it's made for drying wood check it out

When I get a free second I will go ck that out . Just been so busy lately trying to keep up I haven’t had time to watch all the other channels. Greenhouses work great to dry wood in .

Did I inspire you to try this?! Hope it works out!

I’ve dryed wood in big greenhouses before but ya that’s why I was watching your videos with the tote in the greenhouse to see what kind of luck you had with it . I was going to mention you channel name as I was slapping this thing up but at the moment neither of us could remember the exact wording of your channel and we didn’t want to goof on your channel name . I will give ya a shout out when we do a follow up video cause you did a way better job explaining it all than I did .

Have you tried burning that “green wood “ ? Just curious how it burns, might be good enough for outdoor use.
@AllenFamilyFirewoodАй бұрын
We did a test the other night with what I call the wet stuff and a test with the dryer stuff . Even with dry kindling and 3 firestarters we couldn’t get either to burn so now it’s a waiting game to get it just dry enuf . I’d rather let the stands go empty than put wet wood there that won’t burn .

That would work as long as it was a massive sized one like they use in a kiln . Kinda pointless spending 20 k when I only need it for a few weeks .

If you are not trying to grow plants why use clear plastic, would black poly absorb more solar energy and create more heat? I am no HVAC guy but I would think if the inlet opening is not equivalent to the exit it would restrict the fans CFM, air will take the path of least of resistance which is along the outside edge the peak of the poly and not be pulled through the wall of stacked wood. IMHO had the rows been orientated the opposite direction air flow would have been more efficient between the rows.
@AllenFamilyFirewoodАй бұрын
I used clear plastic mostly because I’m familiar with how it works I think black would shade the wood and it wouldn’t build up the inside temp . I think I got the fan hole and the hole at the inlet about the same size .

look at oak farm firewood that kiln is working

I’ve watched a lot of Archys kiln videos . Hands down I think he has the best set up for drying wood and producing wood on KZbin .

Shelter logic greenhouse in a box

I don’t think they make any that will let me drive a 75 hp cab Trackter in under to bring in the wood . . Most of the portable buildings or greenhouses don’t hold up real well when ya get 16 in of wet heavy snow on them either .

Somehow I got unsubscribed to your channel. I have an idea for you to ponder. Why not build a pair of small walls mounted on pallets you can move with your tractor? On one end a box for the fan and the other a vent you can control. Then you can quickly make the greenhouse as long or as short as you wish. Just something to ponder.
@AllenFamilyFirewoodАй бұрын
That’s a really good idea. I’ll remember that for when I have more time to make it better. Thanks!

Karen went plant your tomatoes 🍅 put them inside of a black rubber tires 🛞 grown faster because it’s black Karen . Be the same for a greenhouse for heat . 😊

I’m no expert on greenhouses Leonard, but I’d certainly try it if I had time to grow tomatoes lol. I go to the produce stands for my tomatoes…if I can!

Not worth the effort because any gains are negated by loss of airflow

A reg greenhouse with fans set up would definitely be better but it was quick to put together and the cost was under $100 . Gota try stuff to see if it works or ya won’t never know . So far it seems to be working ok it’s definitely shortening the dry time and that’s what we were looking for .

Make a ton of wood for next year to make sure you will have enough. Without spending a ton of money on a kiln, I don't see how you are going to rush mother nature. "How much wood do you need?? The answer is always more". To Quote In The Woodyard...
@AllenFamilyFirewoodАй бұрын
We would have been all set on dry wood for bundles even with the added stands this yr but what we wasn’t expecting was one of the stands to consistently sell over a 100 bundles ever 2 days . This summer has also been the perfect camping weather so it has also doubled our sales at all our other stands . I won’t make that mistake again next yr instead of starting the yr with 30 cord I will start it with 75 -100 cord of bundle grade pine but in the meantime I gota keep cutting and splitting and drying wood as fast as I can .

Gota try and it’s really not that far off from the greenhouses we used to have . Only took a few hrs to put together .
