“Sincerity, simplicity, and purity of sound.” So true! Their hits bracketed my entire K-12 years. I wore the grooves out on my babysitter’s 45 of “Close to you.” “Top of the world” was my favorite song during my 2nd grade roller skating party. We’ve only just begun” was our senior class song. @@papadwarf6762 …About the dress… According to a documentary, when Karen saw herself in this dress on this show, she was upset about the fat on her waist. (It wasn’t a lot of fat, but she had an ideal and fairly thin figure from 17 until this time.) This feeling of being overweight started her eating disorder. To me, Karen was so beautiful and her sweet charm completely melts my heart. So it’s sad for me to say these words about her weight and her eventual demise. If I could have been her friend I would have helped her. Anyway, as their fame began they toured around the world doing extreme numbers of concerts. They were very ambitious, and worked every day which left absolutely no time for a normal life. They needed to take time for stress relief, but they kept working and life unraveled.

Karen's voice was reeeeally low alto. Virtually every woman who sings down that low has a smokey, husky, almost manish aggressiveness in their singing. Somehow Karen was able to sing with a rich, velvety chest voice while maintaining an almost impossible lightness that made it sound like she was singing in a high register rather than low, all the while with unspeakably perfect phrasing, breath control and matchless even tone. Utterly incredible singing.

She had one of the most beautiful voices that ever was. So soothing to the ears… When I see her on videos, I’m sure I’m in the majority here, where I still feel a sadness and wish she were still with us. And still the Carpenters and her voice makes me smile. So sweet that at times, (knowing she’s been gone now 40 years) that her voice is so beautiful it’s almost too painful to listen to. Anyone else have that feeling?

The wireless technology they had in 1973 on the Bob Hope show was amazing. No Mics, no messy cables, and they sound just like the record. Incredible!

Much easier to produce a show without mucking around with all of the audio trying to make it sound like the studio recording. They did a good job of syncing up. I didn't see one mis-cue in the whole performance.

@gnedrbrb58534 жыл бұрын
tony keisling it’s quite ironic that you say that. The day Karen died was an anniversary for the “The Day Music Died” (the crash with Ritchie Valens, Buddy Holly and the Big Hopper). Such a shame that we lost her.

You are so right. It’s almost as if she just decided to end the Carpenters the day she passed, because without her there was no Carpenters. I wonder if things might have been different if Richard and A&M had let her release her solo album? She was defeated after her album, which she loved, was shelved.
