Along with the lovely art produced for the program, there is the art of the photographer. Whoever handles the cameras on site are artists also. I stop the film and look at many of the vistas shown. Lovely series.

Alicia's work is not only cinematic, it's poetic in her Turneresque style, wonderful young artist, and well deserving of LAOTY.

Watching the video, I totally understand her choice, and I think she stayed true to her own way of painting. It shows the beautiful landscape but also how it's heritage partly was lost and gone and never restored with the fire. This episode should inspire people in Manchester to restore the mill. I am surprised some of the comments here that show they really have no idea what this painting is all about. It is spot on when it comes to the commision, making just a nice view of the canal as some here thing should have been done, miss the historic importance of what her painting shows! Amazing!

Loved it and got it! The factory fire devastating for the mill families, the softest of pallets and the houses following the canal. Of a bygone industry well done.

The flaming mill is completely on-brief. The canal brought employment, including boat workers and millworkers. We learned the mills exploited families, who were stuck there. That particular mill burned in the 90s IIRC, and they didn't choose to fix it after the fire. It's a symbolic. I think they expected her to do the canal basin downtown - old juxtaposed against new etc. That's where I thought she'd go, too, but I'm well pleased with her landscape.

Wow! What a phenomenal ending to a wonderful season. Her final painting is amazing. It not only pays homage to the stories of the canal and the people impacted by its presence - but also to the artists of the area. It fits nicely into the tradition of the likes of Turner and will hold its own in a gallery filled with Valette and Lowry. Kudos to a job well done.

I'm very thankful to have this program... so don't take me wrong.. I think they set her up for failure with an overwhelming brief.. These artists who win the final commissions need a little more of a narrow focus.. It's ridiculous what they expect them to accomplish . That said I was disappointed in this final piece.. But then I believe they chose the wrong artist. She may have achieved something if she had narrowed her focus ..

I would have liked to see a focus on one area, even if it was just the fire itself. But as a whole, she saw a lot and wanted to include it all, and I like it! The town, with sort of a ghostly fire up on the hill, looming over it. That misty fog over the mountains in the back. Sorry, not fog! That was the actual smoke from the fire. It's great how it's drifting over without ruining the atmospheric perspective. The darkness of the treeline guiding you along the canal. The little bush in the far right corner capturing the sun set. I would love to see it up close to see if there is anything else hiding in it. She did a wonderful job with that level of assignment, and she learned a lot, so she's still a winner! The artists of the past would be wondering what sorcery it was, because they didn't often capture scenes from a birds eye view.

No will anyone else. I watched the Final before this and I knew straight away what we were going to get. This woman needs a 2 knocking of her 28 years. She is in some peculiar land of her own and when you hear her talk, you realise she is not quite on this planet. She references everything through films, while side lining Reality. That gets reflected in her work. She was completely the Wrong Choice for this commission and Manchester are now stuck with a rather weird painting of nothing in particular. It's not even very good. But that is because the judges live in their own bubbles too

She was asked to paint the historic canal. So many wonderful images of the canal danced across the screen to see one minute of a painting that totally missed what she was asked to do. It is a lovely painting of the country side but you would of had to tell me it was of the canal. It’s really too bad. She had some beautiful sketches and then submitted a picture of a fire on the side of the hillside which is no where near the canal if she was trying to depict the mills fire that happened just recently. Disappointed. There where other artists that would of gave a better painting of the canal depicting the old with the new. Oh well.

I didn't like the painting, on its own as a semi abstract of a countryside its good, but not on the subject, it missed all the points. I also didn't see the WOW factor in the faces of the audience when it was unveiled . It was more like a stunned silence.
@jthompson13
@jthompson13 Жыл бұрын
That’s is what I felt too. The commission was for a painting of the history of the canal not of a fire with a country side. Someone would have needed to tell me it was of the canal. I would of assumed it was picture of a poor family estate burning down. Plus you’re right about the non-wow factor. It was more of a where is the canal and why am I looking at a fire on top of a hill factor. Plus I was tired of hearing about her self doubt. Believe in yourself. Oh well.

Can’t admire her style. In the topiary garden, she ignored all its dark, in-your-face impact and replaced it with something distant, vague and hardly recognisable.

What I loved most about this episode is the backstory and Joan's wonderful narration of the history of Manchester. Personally, I liked everything about the painting as an artwork, but not as a representation of Manchester's history. If she wanted to include fire, I wish Alicia had represented it within the context of the burned mill instead of just placing it in the landscape, away from where the fire actually happened. As far as fulfilling the brief, I honestly did not get a sense of the intriguing Manchester history and the generations of people that contributed to it's history from the artwork, nor did I get a sense of Manchester's revitalized present. A disappointing realization of the objective.

You put my words to text there! After the fantastic sites we were shown during her travel through the canal and the work she did before, I felt a bit like " meh" when I saw the finished painting. With her talent she could have done so much more of the subject. I missed any interesting contrast in the final artwork, it was all done in the same tone so to speak. I thought the inspiration from Valette would show through more. It is not a bad artwork in itself, not just very eye catching. Honestly I liked her sketches better.

The painting reminded me so much of the Danish Artist Oluf Høst who was so attracted to painting fire. There is also the French philosopher Gaston Bachelard who wrote the beautifull poetic philosophy Meditation sur la Flamme - its filled with Word images of fire 🎵❤️🎶🎨

I had never heard of the painter Adophe Valette but the name Valette is very familiar to me as I come from Malta and the name of the Grandmaster who led the knights of St. John during the famous Ottoman Great Siege of Malta in 1565 was Jean Parisot de Valette. I wonder if there's a relationship there.

A few observations from a professional artist. Although the painting is a beautiful piece it does not fulfill the brief. The canal is nowhere to be found, the buildings, if there at all, are hiding within the whispy underbrush. This was a failed brief. Nothing in this piece says "canal" or "history" or anything else. She's a very good artist, but not for this specific ask. Elisha's dress for the unveiling looks like a swatch list of all the dye colors offered by H DuPont Silk Dyes! It looks like a potato sack dress, possibly worse. Odd choice of clothing for a semi-formal presentation. Finally, I believe the artist Afsheen Nasir would have fit this brief MUCH better.

I think these final shows should be less about the myriad influencing minutiae of the commission, but more about the artist actually painting the work commissioned. There was like 45 minutes of boring fluff and 1 minute of painting in this.

That '45 minutes of boring fluff' was actually the reason for the painting? I am sorry it hurt your braincell that you may actually Learn something. What a shallow immature individual you must be. Compared to the people they were talking about you are actually a blot on the landscape. Try not to steal too much oxygen.
