Alligator Gar: catch and cook. (SO GOOD!)

In this fishing video as I tried eating gar for the very first time. I've a ton of gar over the years but never brought one home to eat. I was a bit nervous with cleaning such a large fish but that wasn't as hard as i thought it would be. I was very surprised to find that gat tasted really good! No fishy flavor at all. I will be eating these again.

The way I'll typically do it is mince up the meat into smaller pieces in a food processor. Then I'll add small chunks of boiled potato, and onions, green pepper, garlic, and seasoning. I'll form it into balls, roll it in fish fry, and deep fry it. I've also skipped the fish fry and just rolled it in flour, and browned it in a dutch oven and then made a gravy with a roux, onions, peppers, celery, garlic, and veggie broth. Both ways are really good, but I prefer fried. KFred has a video and he does it very similar to me.

You should try doing it Blackened any kind of white meat fish is super good Blackened you need an oil with a high smoke point for blacening make a spice blend of your liking paprika, onion powder, thyme, pepper, salt, cayenne, oregano if you like it. You can also grill it, but I love mines slow baked in a pan over water with limonand cajun seasonings with onion. once it is cooked it is moist and falls apart. You just have to keep adding water.

I do but they are so large and heavy that I just use a golf umbrella since I do a lot of solo trips. Easy to pack and carry

You shold try making gar balls and next time u make gar nuggets just cut them thin and they will be much better

I saw some recipes for gar balls. They looked good. I wanted to get 1 simple recipes in as a base to try the meat. What’s a good thickness to slice them? 1/4”, 1/2” or thinner?

@BitesandStrikesFishing I like to slice them about 1/4 inch just cuz I like them Krispy fallow the grain that the meet has u dont even need a knife the fish falay will com out all on ther own just bye pulling on it then just cut it in half

I actually found access to the rio grande here in texas border town but the current is a bit tough and it takes my line despite the sliding weight ( 3 oz sliding weight) any tips on how i could manage?? Have you had a similar situation??

I have. Normally if I have to use any weight over 4 Oz I wait till the water calms down. If it’s always that strong you’ll need to look for an eddy or slack water.
