I work in the medical field. I was stressed so I bought a designer bag and carried my authenticity card in case someone said my bag was fake. Turns out nobody cares...nobody! The other day I complimented a co-worker of mine on a bag and she surprised me by telling me it was a knockoff. Because the workmanship of her bag is not inferior to my genuine bag. Then learned about *gtdupe* . Also became a new brand for me *gtdupe*

I finally broke down and bought one, and I don't like it! Silk and lightweight linen! I realized Allison is feeling the same way about pants, and me too-I am short-waisted, so high-waisted pants are uncomfortable, and when I wear black, I feel like a waitress, haha! So agree on not having a finite amount of time without wearing before decluttering. I live in northern europe, we don't always have a scorcher of a summer, but neither do we always have a freezing drawn out winter. So my high summer pieces don't always get a lot of wear, neither do my thermal layers, warmest of winter coats and snow boots. I'm not going to declutter just because the weather wasn't as extreme as it can be - next year could be different. And a six month or even a year deadline would have me decluttering stuff I need/ want to wear for the season ahead!

Here’s a tip regarding the three words: I’ve noticed that if a piece portrays all 3 words of mine (playful, nostalgia, carefree), it’s an absolute favorite. If two, it’s a workhorse. One word and l just never wear it because it takes too much effort to style - The exception being accessories. l have a lot of fun, playful ones and nostalgic vintage ones which easily take the seriousness out of anything otherwise too boring or conservative

This is all so helpful. In the past I have bought plain white shirts and classic blazers as they are touted as 'must haves'... I NEVER wore them! When tempted to shop I also find it helpful to tell myself that you can like/appreciate/admire a garment without having to own it. I like a variety of things but not everything is right for me and my lifestyle.

I am so thankful that I did not declutter my designer pieces that I purchased back in the 90's. They are current now and I absolutely LOVE that style for me personally. I know I will need to tweak it to make it fresh, but I will say that I got rid of several things in a moment of "oh I am a mom now and I will never wear that again" that I am now regretting. If you have a place that you can store pieces that are your favourites but are now out of fashion, please do that. You will regret it one day because fashion just continues to recycle itself and I find that my older pieces were made in a way that clothing is no longer made today. I literally have pieces that look like they walked out of the boutique and are from 20-30 years ago. I was so close to decluttering it all as I have done in the past because I just liked the feeling of decluttering but thank goodness I held on to some of my most loved pieces. My tip is find a balance and if you do find joy in just looking at it even though you do not want to wear it now.....KEEP IT!

I can't tell you how much I relate to this. I also bought the requisite white shirt - more than once. I never wanted to wear it, ever. I just don't love that look for myself. I have also bought the expensive trousers. I also have a short torso, and I like LOW RISE jeans, good jeans. I don't like pleats. I tried so hard to make the trousers work. I am old enough to be your grandmother, Allison, but our tastes are so aligned. Thank you for being so clear about these things. I want a wardrobe that brings me Joy.

I have owned a lovely crisp white button down for years and never wore it. I just discovered how it works for me. I layer it under something and I only button the top half. I completely cross the lower half over itself to remove the “bulk” I dislike when under something. Then Tuck the crossed shirt in. It slims the lower half of the shirt. It’s the only way I can wear it.

I’m a big fan of a white button down, especially oversized. The men’s department is a great location. Woman’s shirts suck. but- I like it to have some edge... it’s got an interesting hem, or is got an edgy silhouette. Sometimes all it needs is to be buttoned one button off.

I bought the Aritzia effortless pants three times and then I bought a leather pair from Aritzia and I have eventually given them all away and just gave up and decided I don’t wear trousers. I either wear denim or cute dresses and mini skirts and I have to accept that but now I realize why - they make me feel like a banker. Such balanced and practical advice. Good idea about putting items you’re undecided about in a tote bag. I think when I try this, I’ll make a note on my phone of what’s in the tote bag for easy reference in case I’m looking for one of the items. I like that you said there’s not a time limit for getting rid of something. This takes some of the stress out of the editing. Could you do a video on how to sell clothes you know longer want to keep?

Love your videos and I am reading your book. Totally relate to the button down shirt story. I have many and never wear them. Love the look of a shirt. But -I like to wear T-shirts. Because they are so comfortable. I fear comfort may overtake style though. I have a pile of clothes called “on probation” the ones I don’t really feel good in. I am having some problems with my three words. This is hard for me to nail down. I get so upset at wasting money on the wrong clothes.

Btw I have read your book twice cover to cover but I’m still a bit conflicted in my own wardrobe as my day to day life is one thing then my social and holiday life is a total other! I spend most of my days in jodhpurs and sweats and boots then am a granny 2 days a week then like to be super glamorous when I go out or go on holiday so I basically have a whole separate holiday wardrobe! Your advice has really helped me combine my granny days and usual social life days into one though which I can mix and match and stop “saving things for best” so I just enjoy being a bit glam on granny days too even if I’m going to soft play or the park 😂😂!

I used to read those 10 Items Every Woman Must Have In Her Closet lists & think, really? "Classic" styles don't work for my body or my life style. I can't wear a button down because I'm way too busty, they never work. And I don't like them enough to buy one that is 2 sizes too big & then pay a tailor to completely remake it. Same with a black pencil skirt or black pumps or a beige trench coat or ballet flats...I laugh at the videos that tell me certain items are out of style & to stop wearing them. Well, what if experience has shown me the new style looks terrible on me? I don't care if it's the current trend of cut or color, I'm not buying it if it won't work for me (my body, my lifestyle, my preferences) I really don't give a ___ about looking "classic."

What about pieces you like for a while but get sick of? Because your style evolves or they are dated…. Is there anyway to avoid it? I feel like no given style just evolves. I personally am someone who gets the most joy from experimenting and more playful looks.
