Geraldo has clearly forgotten what things were like in the late '70s. I don't dispute that Carter was a genuinely decent man, and I give Carter all the props in the world for brokering peace between Israel and Egypt. However, personal decency doesn't automatically translate into competent, effective, inspiring ,and decisive leadership. Certainly by 1979, there was a general perception that things just weren't going right anywhere (Israel-Egypt aside) and that the US was just being pushed around. Soviet influence seemed to be expanding everywhere. The Soviets invaded Afghanistan. US embassies in both Tehran and Islamabad had been attacked. The 444 days of the Iranian hostage crisis. And let's not forget domestic troubles -- double digit inflation and interest rates by 1979. Yes, Carter should be remembered as perhaps one of the most personally honest and decent men to be president, but he was not a successful president. He was a far more successful and admirable ex-president.
