This was always my favorite song by The Band, and is as much a tribute to Rick as it is to Levon. Warren comes very close to the plaintive sound of Rick singing this song. If only they'd had Garth doing that beautiful tenor sax at the end it would have been perfect. The Brothers have been my favorite American band for 40+ years and they once again demonstrated why.

Trev Mac Yes amen to that. He was a great musician and equally incredible human.

Trev Mac one of these songs that was owned by a singer. Danko channelled something otherworldly when he sang it. Of course the harmonies by Emmanuel and Helm was the cream on top of the cream. One the most beautiful songs and no disrespect to Warren and the gang here as it’s a tough one. I’ve toyed with doing it with my band but the bar is high in this one after listening to Danko sing it with the Band. Wishin Danko was still with us.

One of the saddest songs ever written in my opinion, and an absolute Danko masterpiece.....but it's difficult to solo over, start, and finish. All of which show up in this version, and is why it's virtually never covered by anyone.

I looked through the comments and you would never know that Robertson wrote this song. Sure Danko sang it perfectly; and Helm was integral to the sound of the band; and there never was a singer better than Manuel; and the musicality of Hudson will never be equalled; but without Robbie they were great separate talents. He made The Band more than the sum of its parts.

The Band, Levon, Danko, Manuel.... I wish the kids of today knew what they're missing out on! They're looking up to kids like Justin Bieber, and I have to ask myself "why?". He can't sing, he can't write, he's a fuckin' product and nothing near a musician, he looks like a first grader.... What's to like??? I'm gonna die a happy man, knowing I've heard real music! Btw, had dinner with The Band in 1994:-) Surreal.....to say the least!

RICK DANKO: "I hate to say this, but it's as much of a Rick Danko song as it is a Robbie Robertson song. I just forgot to seek (credit). Robbie was very tight with sharing those responsibilities. That's why he's where he is, and that's why we are where we are, to make a long story short... He'll say he did it all, if you give him the opportunity"

OK - Nice but what happened to the guitar solo? Derek Trucks could have pulled off a nice solo at the end but Warren seemed to fill in at the very last moment for an awkard ending. One of the greatest BAND songs with half hearted effort. The keyboard players looking around as if to say who is gonna pull of the Robbie Ending and nobody stood up... Sad. I saw Levon do this at the Beacon with Jimmy Vivino and he gracefully nailed it and sang it. As much as I adore Derek and Love Warren... this one came up a little short.
