45 years ago my husband named our daughter after this song. At age 16 her dad passed away. She has cerebral palsy and Parkinson's disease. In spite of all that she's still sweet- Sweet Melissa❤

Southern Rock is as amazing now as it was then. Born in 74 to hippies who all played bass in bands. These are my roots. First concert was Greg Allman in the 80’s, my uncles opened for him so they got me bars . I wept when he passed. I’ve raised my children on this sound, and now a 6 m/o grandson will know his roots. Skynyard, Allman Bothers, Eagles, Marshall Tucker, etc. Few musicians now can hold a candle to these true musicians. Shout out to the Swampers! ❤️

@Joe La Mel, in many ways it was. And the music was lyrical. It was magic in so many ways but not perfect. I sure never sat inside when I was a kid. I was too busy climbing trees, exploring my neighborhood & the canyons nearby. And we would come in when it started to get dark. To see an over weight kid was rare. I would like to take a time machine back some time!

My middle school honors teacher was Greg’s neighbor and a few weeks before he died she told him how I loved him and his brothers music and that his brother was a huge influence on my guitar playing. He had a huge smile from that cause he had no idea people under 30 still liked their music. Not that being under 30 and liking old music means anything but I’m just happy I gave a little bit of positivity to him indirectly before he passed considering their music gave a lot of positivity to me ❤️❤️❤️ rip!

I was a teenager during the 70s. This music brings back lots of memories. Got my drivers license when I was 16 in 76 and bought a 1970 Nova coupe. V8, 4 speed and still have it. Needs total resto though. Nothing like cruising down the road late on a summer night listening to music like this. Maybe when I get my youngest out of college, I can get the old chevy going again.

This song gives me chills and takes me back to 1972....I'm a "yankee" from New York State but back then we listened to Southern Rock and loved it. My brother got me hooked on the Allman Brothers even though I was quite young. Also, I had a friend whose parents moved from Atlanta to NY State and he introduced me to Molly Hatchet and Lynyrd Skynyrd etc. Take me back.

I can't listen to this song without bursting into tears. When I was a little girl, maybe 3 years old all the way up till my daddy passed in 2010 when I was 22, the one and only song I would ever request from him, my most favorite song he would sing and play his guitar to, was this one. He would ask me which song I wanted him to play, but he always knew my answer was going to be this one. What would drive a 3 year old to want to hear this song? ... Idk either, but this song was, and will always and forever be, my most absolute favorite. I'll see you again one day. I love you daddy.

makes me think of my Daddy. he passed away several yrs ago. It was an honor to know my Dad and be a part of the Ole Mans life and it was a true honor to be a part of his passing. He was a legend. No body messed with the ole Man. All though he would give the shirt off his back and buy tools he did not even need just in case one of the neighbors needed to borrow anything. Just like helping people. A True Harley Rider at its Best. I loved going up to get his trophies when he showed his bikes. He was a classic just like this song! They called him The Ole Man out of respect however his nick name was Big Moe. He had a heart of Gold and in the end days, we made a pack. He said KC when it gets back you gotta let me go. I said Daddy, ill take to as far as I can to the Heavens and ill let you go into Jesus's Arms. He said he heard the thunder and Chuck was leading the pack. My Brother, and he was ready. He passed like a Man of Honor and a Man of God. I love you Daddy!

I went down to the Yucatan with a beauty named Melissa around the time this song was playin. Spent most of our time on Isla Mujeres when it was just a small village. Had the time of our lives laughin and singin. Every time I hear this song those memories surface and bring a smile to my face. Sweet Melissa...

A great delta rock band! And yes the mid 60's to the mid 70's produced some of greatest music of all time! with the most diverse groups of anytime! That's was a great 10 years before music executives could figure out how package you in a plastic box like the other ten bands! And during that time MoTown was blowing across the lake into Chicago with some badass music! Hitsville USA! Baby!!! And it wasn't till the 90's when music came out the back room with a new fix! Sinn Fein

The first time I saw the ABB in the later 70's they played a couple of songs and got some polite applause. They then played Melissa and the arena went absolutely nuts. I've never been at a show since and had that happen.

One of my favorite songs. My Uncle used to sing it to me when I was a kid. He passed away several years ago. Now anytime I hear it or the times people have randomly sang it to me it makes me think of him. We would sit on the floor in front of the coffee table and draw pictures so I could get it get of my system. I was always in trouble at school for drawing in my notebooks and on my desk instead of paying attention. He was that kid too.

One of the things that I find so striking, so unique about this shimmering gem of a song is that the singer ISN'T singing about the song's namesake, but is actually singing about her lover 'the Gypsy Man.'

One of my favorite songs EVER in any genre. I remember the first time heard it as a teenager, it stopped me in my tracks and made me listen. Something about this song combines happiness and sadness that makes it Just Right. Joy and mourning and a yearning quality. A little insight, but not too much; not beating it to death. It's the guitar and the voice. It's all of it. This song is a blessing to us all.

My daughter Melissa Lynn King was a fan of her dad's music. Just a little God fearing, hippie girl, who loved her dad and sister. She passed away at the age of 20 in Feb. 1st 2004. I love this song, and it very much reminds me of her.

When I was a freshman in college, back in 1974; yes I'm that old. My boyfriend surprised me with tickets to see The ABB. It was early in November, at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago. We had great seats. Wow! What a show! They played for three hours. They will Always be my favorite band. As far as I'm concerned, the song- " Melissa " is The ABB! Rest in peace- Duane, Berry, and now Gregg. ( please excuse the ramblings of an old woman,re-living her college years.)

My mom was named after this song. Her dad had bad ptsd & was abusive after being in Vietnam. But listening to this makes me feel like he had a heart in there somewhere. My mom waited until I was about 22 to become a full blown addict. I'm 27 and I haven't spoke to her in years. Even though we live in the same neighborhood and I see her out sometimes. I know avoiding her is best bc she isn't her anymore. But...when I get to missing her. I put on this song & cry a little. Man...she was named after a song that once fit her well

This song brings back so many memories. I was born in 1973 and had an Uncle who was just 13 years older than I (may he rest in peace). We spent a lot of my childhood together until he shipped off to the United States Air force in the 1980's. We always remained close and always kept in contact even through the distance between us. He was my best friend and a huge influence on my life, my musical taste and my love of music. This was a favorite song of his and we used to listen to it in his Volkswagen bug while cruising through our little town. When I got pregnant with my daughter I had a heck of a time deciding on a name for her. Knowing this, he called on the phone one day and reminded me of this song and the good times we had while listening to it. Needless to say my 20 year old daughters name is Malissa (spelling variation on my part) LOL. I sure do miss him a lot!

The Allman Brothers are the last people I know to speak her name. My family hasn't been able to talk to her. That's why I moved far away from them. I figured, if they were ignoring that she died, than they were also ignoring me. It's easier to be ignored when you live far away. You can chalk no one caring to, "oh, well I live too far away ." so. It still hurts.
