Imagining a 2000 mile journey in a double canoe, headed to an unknown island dotting a vast ocean. Now we do too much of our exploring in cyberspace. Thanks for uploading these vintage videos. I see that Alan Ziegler has been dead twenty years. RIP.

Imagine a world with WAY LOWER sea level EVERYWHERE and how much shorter these journeys could have been and the ocean has covered or wiped out all trace of predominantly woodworking peoples.

This is an amazingly produced documentary covering an amazing breadth of history. A topic I've long be interested in is the very early maritime migrations of polynesians and melanesians. It's amazing to think of them navigating oceans in dugouts to remote islands. As well as the voyages of the great Zheng He and the other remarkable seafaring accomplishments this is a great documentary.

@@samuelj2408 Tell that to the people who die out there all the time. They may say differently, or maybe they would if they weren't dead. I wouldn't put too much faith in our domination of space either. Sounds like you've taken Star Trek way too seriously.

@@LuisCypher4666 Man dieing doesn't mean he hasn't conquered something. Man always dies and their children go further. (Or that is how it used to work.) That being said, I don't believe man has conquered the ocean considering how much of it is unexplored.

@@samuelj2408we have not conquered space or the ocean we navigate both with respect and we are still in crawling phase of space travel compared to what is possible. You can’t conquer the ocean you can use skill and knowledge to be as safe as possible but there will always be risk of disaster.

yo im watching this because i have a theory, ancient nephilim giants were the Maori seafarers who had an extensive coastal civilization that spawned the stories atlantis, sea peoples, carthage, pheonicia... etc. They went around in boats and controlled the world. how far back though? we have human ancestors stretching 3million years. Maybe all of this stuff happened independently, like homo sapien occured via evolution and changing climate and these various groups who were disconnected via the changing climate ~15KYA. Then we get all these stories ebcause different groups of humans were more hostile to each other than a lion in the wilderness... So we get all these stories of ancient battle as all these peoples inland settled and took over the seafarers places. It is incredible really. but now im gonna watch this and see if im on the right track. We really are not original and we all just do what the environment makes us and our genetic instructions. Gosh i wish i could hold a cohesive thought long enough to type it out. But i guess this would be 900 pages isntead of a paragraph

The narrator sounds like William B. Davis aka "The Cigarette-Smoking (Cancer) Man" of X-Files fame... I know Gillian Anderson has done some documentary voice over work, but I didn't know if Davis ever did...

The ocean continues to take lives every year. That which is larger than us can never be conquered, only momentarily overcome. That is like an ant proclaiming "I have conquered the forest!" because he has traversed a web of tree roots. Also, too long didn't watch.
