Conservative Party leader Rishi Sunak asked why the Prime Minister had decided to boost the pay of train drivers earning £65,000 a year while a pensioner living on £13,000 annually would lose their winter fuel payment.

LoL....... yeah, right. believe me, it's effing cold without any heating in winter. i know this to be a fact!!! my comment is a factually based comment. if you can add credit to your meter whilst not utilizing your heating in summer then do so... p.s something the lags from customer service haven't worked out yet is that you cannot go into debt with pre payment meter ie: if you have run out of credit the meter closes down the supply. refer to us naive folk, when coming to a new property, being saddled with the debt of others not just the previous occupiers......................................

Why are they still allowed to claim their own £3000 heating allowance. We don't want housing benefits we want to heat the houses we have worked hard for. Dear Prime Minister, please do not feel bad on our behalf. I know it must have been very difficult to take these hard decisions. I am nearly eighty and in all my long years this is the first time I feel guilty for still being alive. Last winter when it was so damp, I said to my husband put the heat on as we have had our winter fuel allowance so there is no need to be cold. The Conservatives made many stupid mistakes, BUT, there was never a mean minded spiteful attack on those who do not drive a train, work in a hospital etc etc like you and your government did recently. So, dear prime minister as you sit in your warm office, warm car and warm home I don’t want you to give us a second thought.

It's the old, most vulnerable pensioners who are suffering the most. They are not even paid £13,000 per year State Pension. They are paid over £50 per week less than those on the New Pension, the £100 per person for a couple's Winter Fuel Allowance making just 2 weeks shortfall on their pension. The injustice of having a two tier State Pension is beyond belief, even beyond the injustice of withdrawal of the Winter Fuel Allowance!

Well said. Every time there is a percentage increase in pensions those on the New Pension get a great deal more than those on the Old Pension. Labour boasts about a £400 pa increase in pensions. That is only for the 15% on the New Pension, it is a great deal less for those on the Old Pension. The gap between the two is now £52 per week before the increase. That is a lot of food and heating for someone.

There's an old lady in my road, mid 90's and very frail and i don' think she will survive another winter. A few neighbours keep and eye out for her but she's very stubborn and proud and won't accept help. A few neighbours have said we will help with her heating bills but she's having none of it. Last winter i bumped into her one day and she was blue, i held her hand and she was frozen. When it's cold she and her friends sit in the library to keep warm, the library that we have just found out recently the council is closing to save costs. This country is falling apart and the day we can't help the elderly in our communities and instead helps other non deserving is the day the country lost the plot. I feel that day has come and gone.

as a retired community nurse i saw this all the time during the winter i think we need to do this at a local level with the council doing something providing hot meals and a warm safe space for the vulnerable

@@lizevans8043 Local councils used to run the residential care homes and did a good job too. Then they were all sold off and private companies took over and they're mostly appalling. But yes, there should be a pensioners' club in every town or village. There certainly used to be many more facilities. With all the money we've being putting into charities, you'd think some of them would actually start to help our own folk rather than all the money being sent abroad or going into the pockets of CEOs.

I've always said that. I'm no economist but if you paid pensioners the living wage, they'd spend more supporting local shops etc & govt would get it back in VAT. Don't they realise pensioners pay the same as everyone else for goods & services? They also have to pay people to do things they can no longer do. I feel there's going to be a lot of homes left to neglect, because it's another expense they can't afford.

The state pension age is currently 66, anyone you reaches this age has had their entire working life to plan for their retirement. Most large companies and those employed in the public sector will have company pensions, others including the self employed had the opportunity to take out a private pension. The State Pension alone is insufficient to enjoy a comfortable retirement, you need additional income.

There's also the small matter of the state pension losing it's value so rapidly over the last 50 years. It's now worth no more than 60% of its real worth in the 70s. On that basis, pensioners should be getting around £15,500 today. Then we have the way it was set up - i.e. that the contributions of those paying NI today is paid to the retired as their pensions. It's always been that way. It was never called a 'benefit' before the Tories started doing so. It was always looked upon as a right because in order to get it you had to pay National Insurance. Today's retirees paid for their parents' and grandparents' pensions - and guess what? No-one complained.

This year I think will be a really cold one unfortunately, I’m a pensioner and I’ve been buying from charity shops jumpers and cardigans plus I bought some socks, to help keep me warm have the hot water bottle as well , even if you don’t use the gas it’s still expensive because of standing charges which is a right rip off !

It's not only about heating though is it? It's every time you shower, turn on kitchen tap, heating kettle, heating stove, having a warm bathroom to step into after a shower, a warm towel, the change in temperature could shock an elderly person, having TV/radio on, so you can hear another voice, putting the light on so you're not stumbling around in the dark, heating the kettle for a hot water bottle, or a few minutes warming up an electric blanket, washing clothes and gawd knows how you'd dry them if you can't afford to turn on the heat long enough. Not forgetting flu and pneumonia. Still, plenty of happy doctors around now to deal with the increase in numbers of elderly hospital admissions. I grew up with no cental heating and I can remember, as most baby boomers can, having frost on the inside of the bedroom window! Now Labour are making the proud elderly beg for a decent winter warmth. 13,400 elderly died from 'excess' deaths in 20/21 winter, with WFA. Why do ministers get over £3,000? They are in warm offices all day, unlike pensioners who will be in a cold home ALL DAY. (Not o forget he illegals 'rights' either, warm hotel rooms, 3 squares). Can't wait for the stats on excess deaths for 242/25 winter, although they'll probably manipulate the figures. Tantamount to murder. Disgusting. Get Labour out.

Valid point. You work all your life knowing that you will at sometime in the future retire. A sensible person would plan for this eventuality in the knowledge that a State Pension wasn't really enough to enjoy a comfortable life. Most large companies and Public services have their own pension schemes into which you make monthly contributions, those who don't like the self employed should be prudent enough to take out a private pension. If you want a comfortable retirement you have to ensure your income will be sufficient before you retire !

£1000 over 5 years is not going to save lives. Add in the threat of the withdrawl of the single person council allowance and the funeral directors will be the ones making the money. If you have been frugal and lived within your means, going with holidays, drinking, alcohol, smoking you then get rob on care fees and subsidise those who have no savings because theyve enjoyed their money.
