I don't know how someone could give a thumbs down. I am a 67 year old retired , female nurse and fixed my garage door opener all by myself, except I needed my son to help drop the unit down. { not enought room above to remove old sprocket and gear}. By far this was the best instructional video out there. It showed all that is needed to change the sprocket and gear. I opted for the whole thing because it would be easier than trying to punch out the little pins to just replace the gear. Just had to tweak the up and down level and it works great. It cost me $ 50.00 for a used unit and saved me hundreds of $$$$$$. Thank you so much. Now I can help my son do his. Of course he can probably do it himself, after watching me. Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the kind words Yvette! I often wonder myself how someone can give that video a thumbs down. Must be the competition is not too happy with lost sales on new machines, now that more folks are fixing their old ones. Glad the video helped you out.

I cannot stress how much this video helped me repair my mother's door opener! It saved her sooooo much money and it was so easy to do. I am mechanically inclined when it comes to cars and what not but this was so easy, a caveman could have done it. Thank you so much for posting this video!!! Its good people like this that make the world a great place to be!!!

I saw a great and sprocket replacement video that was published a year ago, and its instructions are just like yours in this video, published 7 years ago. Although the procedure is common, the finer notes are uncannily similar. I'm giving my thumbs up to you.

Thanks so much for this. Got the parts and a buddy and I got the door fixed in about 90 minutes. Your tip on pre-tapping the holes on the bracket was the best and saved huge aggravation once we got to that part of the shaft installation. In my case, my chain had moved during the failure stage and your video on how to set the correct limits was really helpful. We wound up including some of those tips in the repair process of the shaft i.e. adjusting the trolley to centre and adjusting the limit contact. The one thing we did have to do to fix the door adjustment that wasn't in your video was remove the chain from the sprocket and move the trolley from what had been the original centre start position. We had to do this as we had maxed out our "up" adjustment and it still was not coming up far enough. When we did do these adjustments, we just ran the trolley without it being attached to the door until we got it fairly close. Then, it was just a slight turn of the knob to adjust the tension. Thanks again for your help on this.

Yep! Thanks so much for your video! Took care of it this morning. Overall it took me about an hour of work time and a half hour of being paranoid making sure I did it right. Only thing I didn't do was line up the holes right when putting the 5/16th screws for the assembly. Couldn't snap on the chain protector. Thanks again. We've had this Liftmaster for 19 years. I hope it has a few more left in it!

Great video. On my Craftsman 1/2 hp model, it matters what direction you put the gear in when lining up the 3 bolts that secure it - you also have to make sure the spreader screw hole aligns with one of the extra holes on the gear top part or its a do over.

I just replaced these parts in my own Liftmaster opener. However, I also had to replace the worm gear which had flat edges instead of sharp edges. So that was something I had to figure out for myself. While this is an excellent video, there are a few things to remember: *1)* Most people don't have a 500 watt Klieg light to give them enough light to perform the work. We need the garage door to be open. So either borrow extra lights from friends or you will be opening and closing the garage door to perform the work. Like me. *2)* This video shows the garage door "breaking" in the open position. Mine broke in the _closed_ position. Which means all of the work on the chain would have to be done with the door closed and minimal light. Something to be aware of before you start. *3)* Move _everything_ out of your way. You *_will_* be up and down the ladder a lot and be moving the ladder around. Clear enough space around where you will be working. *4)* Since my door broke in the closed position, I immediately knew I would taking the chain off the opener. There was no other way. So, invest in latex gloves. I ran out because I kept tearing them. *5)* The best information in this video was to pre-thread the holes in the sprocket drive cover. Without that, I would have been struggling for at least another 30 minutes before I figured that one out. Also, if your opener did not come with a chain spreader or was just not installed (my case), pre-thread those holes *_after_* the sprocket drive installation. Again, much easier. *6)* Replacing the worm gear is fairly straightforward but it does require you remove the motor completely. Maybe the All Pro team can do a video of how to do that and link the two! :) *7)* However much time you allot for this task, multiply it by three. You *_WILL_* run into unforeseen issues that will slow you down. It's just a fact of home repair. Remember, this is an excellent video that covers the major points of this specific type of repair. Watch it multiple times before you attempt the replacement. You will benefit greatly.

No problem Mr Dunn, glad to be of assistance. Grease the gears every 7 yrs and they won't strip out. It wouldn't hurt to put a drop or two of oil right underneath the sprocket every few yrs as well...there is a bushing there that also wears out if the chain is too tight.

The only issue I had was that his model had a cap covering the chain gear on top. The assembly had to be fitted a certain position for the cap to fit correctly. Unfortunately I realized this after struggling to get the last screw back in. Such a hard spot, my hands were too big. I left it off and told my neighbor not to stick his hands up there. He was fine with it stating " it's always better to have spare parts after fixing something!". Thanks again for the excellent video!

Drats. I went step by step, and when I turn on the opener the gear move only the slightest little fraction of an inch (practically not at all) and the makes a clicking noise. Any idea what I may have done wrong. The large gear on the spindle of my opener was hamburger, but all else appears in good condition, so I literally followed your video, step by step. Thanks, in advance, for any feedback.
@ALLProGarageDoors
@ALLProGarageDoors 8 жыл бұрын
Normally that would indicate that the chain is too tight. BUT...the clicking noise (if it clicks ten times) means your safety eyes are not aligned properly. If the chain was too tight it would click once or just buzz real quick then shut off. Try the remote, then when it clicks look at the LED next to the program button on the circ brd, it will flash you a code...up to 5 flashes, that will normally tell you the problem.

Great Video - it allowed me to get the gear and sprocket replaced. WOW, the old gear was a mess. Things went bad when my Wife opened the Garage Door and backed out the car. Then once out of the garage she hit the remote in the car and the door (according to her - I wasn't there) came down to just about a foot from being totally closed and then stopped - and I think she said the door went back up again. In any event she pulled the red handle and closed the door manually and locked it from the inside and surprisingly enough remembered to pull the electrical plug out. I came home and investigated and found the Gear really mashed up saw that the motor was turning the large worm gear but there wasn't enough teeth left on the sprocket gear to do anything. SO, I watched your video, ordered the parts (entire kit - even thou I only used the new sprocket and gear - I lubed everything up and plugged it back into the electrical outlet and I opened the door... Unfortunately the door - even thou it opened good - it opened too far and the trolley hit the safety bolt. I hit the remote again and all I hear is a buzz, nothing else happens... So I pulled the red handle and closed the door manually. So the trolley probably had moved before I put the vise grips on it and started the whole process. Any suggestions as to what I do now?

The easiest way is to take the chain loose and move the chain down the rail by hand then hook it back up to the sprocket. there are easier ways for me but too difficult to explain, I plan on doing a follow up video for this situation.
@joejosephs8446
@joejosephs8446 10 жыл бұрын
All-Pro Quality Garage Doors Inc. Well, here is what I did....probably not the right way but it worked... I loosened up the chain until I had about 1 turn left on the nut that attaches to the chain bolt...I then took the chain off the sprocket and moved the trolley back to the center of the rail... I disconnected the door from the trolley with the red handle and then tightened up the chain. I then took the metal bracket off the door and played with the UP and DOWN close screws till the trolley was about 11 inches from the safety bolt on the rail, and to where I could put the door bracket back on the door when the door was closed. I got the garage door to open to an appropriate height and close to the floor. It took a while and also took several open/close gyrations - and I do mean SEVERAL, so many that the motor got real hot and stopped working. I'm hoping that when it cools down I'll be done.... FINGERS CROSSED THAT I DIDN'T burn up the motor. I'll know in about an hour... I didn't think that the motor would overheat because it's a 1/2 horse motor and it's an aluminum door...but it seems to have. We'll see what happens later.
@ALLProGarageDoors
@ALLProGarageDoors 10 жыл бұрын
Joe Josephs Don't worry, it will work fine when it cools down, all garage door opener motors are thermally protected which means when they get hot they shut themselves off and come back on when they cool off. These motors are only rated for 4-6 complete up and down cycles before they get hot. so I think you will find that the problem is solved when it comes back on.

All-Pro Quality Garage Doors Inc. Just to let you know.....The motor was fine after it cooled down and the garage door is opening and closing like a champ again. If you follow the directions you give word for word and step by step there isn't anyone with a bit of mechanical ability (even a little bit) who couldn't do this repair. I can only wish that my trolley hadn't been moved so that I could have put my vise grips on the rail prior to removing the chain...that would have made my task a WHOLE lot easier. AGAIN, Thank You Very Much.

Great video! Fixed my door using these instructions. Mine had the gears stripped out (all at once within about 10 seconds) so I wanted to know what had caused it so it wouldn't happen again on the new one. After replacing the gears and shaft I ran it without the door a few times and noticed the chain was jumping around and having trouble going through the main drive gear. I lubed the chain, flexed it back and forth several times through the whole chain and now its quiet and no longer jumping. I'm pretty sure the chain was what ruined my gears. Hope this helps someone and thank you for posting this video!

"Pre-thread the holes" was a *great* tip. Actually it was all good. I wasn't sure about the limit screws, so I reduced the up/down travel a lot, then slowly increased the travel until acceptable. Thanks a ton.

Thanks for the info I'll take a look inside the unit this weekend. I must say I'm really impressed with my belt drive its quiet and pretty low maintenance especially for lasting 12 years on an original gear. I did check the date on it and it is 09/01 so its just shy of 12 years. Thanks for the help allpro!

Gold star for this video! You made it a breeze. I'd already disassembled before watching, so I missed out on clamping the shuttle in place. It ended up being in the up position, but the limit switch was at the down stop. However, I just removed the little clip, slid the little gear off, then rotated the limit gear until it was at the up position---problem solved!

This was great. For me, I didn't have the luxury of "marking" the limits. After I replaced the main gear and shaft, with the chain still off, I ran the unit to the ends, and determined the "full down". I then put the chain on and ran it. I needed to tighten the chain and it all works well. However, my unit does not have a chain separator, but it does have a sprocket cover. I went to put the cover on, only to find out the the slots it snaps into, were in the wrong place. That gear shaft bracket with the 3 holes, needs to be lined up properly for the cover to snap into place. I left the cover off, not wanting to take the whole thing apart, and start all over again.

Yea the grease does fly around, but enough stays on the gears to keep em cool for many years. Yes you can buy a chain spreader fairly cheap, but not all machines were predrilled for the chain spreader so there is a small chance you might have to drill your own holes into the case, but the chain spreader was a brilliant idea that does quiet the chain drives down.

You're such a kind gentleman. I imagine you removed the spreader to see the part number. I deeply appreciate the trouble and efforts. And you're also so thoughtful about the holes. Yes -- I watched your video and try to figure out what holes you used, but your left hand was blocking the view when you dropped the spreader. I figure one screws into the sprocket top and I probably need to drill the other hole. Question: How can a plastic spreader withstand the wears and tears from the chain?
