Some people don't have the aptitude for DIY. They think everything is too complicated and need to let a "pro" handle it. Shannon makes incredible videos and gives the average DIYer confidence to tackle projects on their own. I think the one thing that set's Shannon's videos apart from other KZbinrs is that he shows the whole process no matter how insignificant it may seem. I'm about ready to close on my house and needs some work so I am incredibly happy to have these videos for reference. Keep up the great work Shannon!

Well, easy in appearance, he also knows all the steps many people take this on and spend substantially more time and effort my time, and my effort are worth more than it would cost to call in a garage door tech for a semi complicated change like this not saying I couldn’t do it, but I’d rather use my time to do something better

This is one of the most helpful videos I've ever seen on KZbin. We almost went down the path of buying an entirely new garage opener, only to discover that this is our exact problem, and all we need is a $20 part?! (which we'll be buying through your amazon link). Every step Shannon shares are SO helpful, well explained, and filmed perfectly. Just subscribed for more.

8:00 THIS STEP IS HUGE. I don't know who needs to see this, but if you go with a new assembly (vs replacing the gear alone) save yourself 10 minutes of fiddling and drive the screws into the cap BEFORE you place the gear/shaft assembly into the motor unit. The screws that go into these holes are self-tapping. You will not be able to tap the hole closest to the motor with just your fingers or a little baby 5/16 wrench, and the screw will keep falling out resulting in many ladder climbs or poking and fishing the screw out from the motor bracket. However, once the screws tap each hole and you drive each screw all the way in before backing them out again, you'll be able to easily finger-tighten all three screws while you have it up in the air in the motor unit. Make the job EASY for yourself, please! Thanks again, HouseImprovements!

When I came across this video I was not sure if the problem I had was the one the video referenced. I had to laugh when I opened up the bottom panel of the garage door opener and it was filled with the white shavings from the gear just like in the video! Every detail was right on point. Thank you for saving us from buying a new opener with this simple fix!
@rtel1233 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the starting tips! Could not lift out the shaft because it is too close to the ceiling. Would have had to drop the whole assembly. Then figured out an easier way. Set door shut. The motor is held with 4 easy screws. Dropped it down and had access to the gear. Drilled away the gear material around the pin and with a c-clamp and an old nut as spacer drove out the pin. Used the clamp to push the pin back in, but had to use the worn gear mounted just below the new one to create a wide enough prying surface for the c-clamp. Nice because you do not touch the chain and you do not disturb the timing.

I sub’d and ❤got what I needed from your video. I wouldn’t even have taken the motor down had I found your channel first. I made a wooden cradle to rest the shaft horizontal to drive the roll pin out to replace the gear and tapered one end of the roll pin slightly on my grinder for easier reinstall. The door opener was probably never adjusted properly because once it stopped raising up I realized the carrier was slamming against the stop bolt and sheared the gear collar almost completely off on one side. Much thanks ❤. I found my part at The ROP Shop on eBay for under $8 with free shipping.

My door will move, BUT it makes a bunch of noise and goes into reverse on the way down. Ordering the kit now. THANK YOU !!! (by the way, it's worth investigating your problem before just ordering the gear. My problem was in the tophat assembly being worn out, causing wobble in the sprocket. STILL under $20 for the whole kit though) UPDATE : I realized the cause of the messed up tophat assembly was the "up travel" adjustment was out of whack, allowing the trolley to hit the bolt stop every time it went up. Was probably not adjusted right at installation. Just an FYI....

My garage door open okay yesterday but it was making a clicking sound from the motor and today it only opened about one foot and then closed open one foot and then closed and I release the manual pull down rope handles and the door wouldn't open so I'm tending to believe it's a bad spring or I use lithium grease before on the cables on the hinges on the spring and everything else and then it was starting to make a strange sound after it shut off and it was almost completely down or up but I don't know if the detention on the spring has loosened up from the lithium grease or not I don't see any broken spring both cables are intact and have plenty of tension

Good video, I agree with taking the powerhead down, it’s much easier for a DIYer to do on the bench, or even the garage floor. I’ll add a couple of points. You might have to rest the unit on a box, or something when lowering it still attached to the chain rail. This one had a good bearing at the sprocket, so he just changed the plastic gear. You can buy the entire assembled shaft,(as Shannon mentioned), for around $23, & many times the sprocket bearing is on its last legs, (there should be no wobble or play in that shaft), I’d be inclined to do it once, & change the entire shaft/bearing. When you bolt the shaft/gear unit back onto the frame, pay attention to how you orient before securing the 3 small bolts. Look at 15:10 on the video. See the two small square holes, just by the outer edge of the sprocket? Make sure one of those holes is centered, ( to the left as shown at 15:10, see the one at the left edge of the sprocket). If the shaft is bolted down, but turned 1/3 from where it’s shown, you cannot clip the plastic guard that covers the sprocket.

I have a garage door opener with similar nylon gears. It is a very old unit, I have never replaced anything on the unit and the door opener gets used daily. Here is my secret to keeping it in like new condition year after year. I open the unit about once a year and generously apply nothing but a product called Vaseline. I use a q tip for an easy applicator. Also don't forget to apply special lube to the long tension spring over the doorway. If you don't lube this spring it will oxidize over time and break.
