I'm adding to the list of thank yous. I spent a lot of time searching for information. So many videos on how to set travel limits when the limits are only a little off, and hardly anything on when the adjustments aren't functional. This was perfect! Exactly what I needed to fix the limits after I had replaced the coupler on my 18 yr old Craftsman. Thanks! Thanks! Bless all the youtubers like you who post this stuff.

Thanks for the clear video. Your video helped me find an idea to adjust my open/close limits to my gate. Here is the story: I had my Liftmaster 5580 ( from 2006) "fixed" by technician. The "fix" hold for 1 day... The Tech guy said that my gear was gone, and it will cost 350$ to replace it!, he also brought a new LM80 for 820$! I didn't agree of course. So, I looked for videos on KZbin and thanks for all the good people that filmed their fixing I was able to understand what is going on. First, I opened the motor back door and I looked carefully. My gear was as new! Then I followed this excellent video by +All-Pro Quality Garage Doors Inc. to have a start point. (2 minutes work time :) Now, my simple idea is to bring the the up and down limiters to their correct place by visual inspecting and manual rotating the screws. I disengage the gate and put a mark on the rail holder of the trolley once for the gate is closed position and another mark for open position to the height I want. Then I engage the motor to a learn position (2 clicks on the orange square button on the back of the motor, the the small light is blinking) The advantage at this mode is that every push on the remote controller is either moving up or down, so I can adjust the trolley position. So, I brought the trolley to the up position and then my simple contribution to the solution is to rotate the up limiter with a flat screwdriver until its metal contact is touching the metal in the middle wide limiter gear, while I am with the motor back cover open so I can see exactly the movements and where and how much I should rotate (no more guessing...) The same I did for the down position. Then I engage the trolly to the gate, start another learning mode and there it was fixed! (at list 2-3 times up and down with learning mode so this motor can adjust itself to the force required. (The blinking light is stooped when the engine did it learning job successfully). I hope this will help someone with the same annoying problem.

Absolutely an amazing quick fix to a frustrating problem. Many, many videos show how to change the drive gear and all of them fail to show your technique on how to adjust the limiters. They skip over that part of the repair and leave you wondering what it is you did wrong when the door won't stay down. Your video hits the nail on the head. BRAVO. Thank you very much!!!!

I just wanted to say thanks for making this video and your other one on the gear swap. I already had my drive gear out and was waiting on parts. Decided to do a little search and see what I could find when I came across the gear swap video. I hadn't even thought about the limit switches or locking my chain in place. Your video saved me some stress as I knew I had to figure out the end points before replacing the gear and chain. It was no big deal, but it could have been a mess. GREAT VIDEO! I found myself needing to accomplish this after I replaced a broken belt. In following the video I also discovered what was probably the root cause of the belt breakage. In this case it was the retainer clip holding the odd shaped gear in place was missing. (not sure we it went) Since I saw that it was actually a low stress situation so I simply used a tiny zip tie. All in all, I'm a happy dude that saved money, and the door now shuts softly, and on the up limit side doesn't hit the stop. Did I say Great Video, and of course a huge THANKS!

Searched but missed this until after I fixed a problem. I found my "Straight Door Arm" bent and the trolley at the wall end of the T rail. After disconnecting the door, the trolley would only travel about a foot then shut off. After looking at several other possibilities including the speed sensor that others suggested, I looked inside the housing and noticed the traveling limit switch contact was near one end of the drive screw. I adjusted the drive screw to put the moving limit switch in the middle just like this video shows. Then I adjusted the down and up limit switches about an inch from the drive screw and operated the trolley (without the door attached) to determine if I had the limits approximately correct. At this point, I could have adjusted the travel limit screws if I needed to, but I was close enough to correct that I decided to attach the door and run the opener again. A couple of adjustments of the down and up limit screws and both the open and closed positions were good. The cause of my initial problem was probably that the down limit did not make contact and the motor kept running, causing the nylon drive screws to flex and its gear disengage. I may need to replace the limit switch drive assembly if the drive screw loses its position again. I also need to reduce the down force because the straight arm was bent when the opener malfunctioned.

@paulkeenan43092 жыл бұрын
So, I am installing a 1979 vintage GDO that has the chain and trolley completely disassembled from the t-rail and also the travel limits were randomly set all over the palace and most likely do not correspond to any position of the motor. However, BEFORE I attempt to "fine tune" the travel limits per your video, I need to "synch" the chain trolley position to correspond to the motor's fully closed position and for that I need to keep the limit switch from interfering (I think ...) with the chain/trolley travel. Do I need to have the DOWN limit contacts (brown wire) set to a position far enough away from the center contact (gray wire) so that the chain can engage the inner trolley BEFORE the limit switch DOWN contact shorts to the CENTER contact? Or does it NOT matter where the down contact is set? Or, should I DISCONNECT and REMOVE the travel limit switch all together during the initial motor-chain synch? If I do the latter, with the limit switch removed, will the motor keep trying to move the chain even farther after the trolley engages? TIA for any reply.
@ALLProGarageDoors2 жыл бұрын
i wouldn’t disconnect the limits, if the limit is close to the down then bring the inner trolley close to the down position then engage the door and fine tune it.

Mike, the top of my chain gear sheared off and the chain got all twisted up. I replaced the gear assemble using your video. It was very helpful. I had to wrestle the chain back on and readjust it. Now when it runs there is a clicking sound from the gear at the top of the unit. I noticed the chain on the right side of the rail as you face the garage door is slight torqued. I think that is what is causing the clicking sound. How can I fix it? Thanks for your help.
@ALLProGarageDoors9 жыл бұрын
Steve Malone Hi Steve...back before the invention of the chain spreader I would get a clicking sound on a lot of machines, sometimes it's because the chain was too tight, other times...too loose, and sometimes there was no way to get rid of it, you just hoped that after a few months it would go away. The noise is caused by the chain not feeding on the sprocket perfectly. Try "slightly" loosening the chain and see if it gets quieter or louder, if it gets worse then go the other way and tighten it some more, one way or the other usually makes an improvement. Try to get it as quiet as possible then let it go for a few months and see if the sprocket wearing in lets it quiet itself on its own, if not then try the same adjustments again.

Hello and thank you for the great video. I got my 1991 Craftsman 1/3 HP opener to work after putting the new gear on it but it stops about 4 to 5 inches from the garage floor and immediatley goes back up without stopping. With the cover off I notice that the down limit does not make contact with the other metal piece, it stops about 1/4 inch before hitting the contact and then reverses its travel as the garage door goes up. In order to keep the garage door from going back up I had to adjust the limiter so it touches the contact right at the point of where the door goes back up in order to keep the door closed (so there is about a 5 inch gap between the floor and the bottom of the garage door). Any ideas on what is causing this to happen and what I can do to fix it?
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
Has to be either I-beams or force control, turn up the down force a number or two.
@motocruiser59668 жыл бұрын
The beams are okay and the force control is turned all the way up. Is it possible that when the spring broke (that is when all of my grief with the opener started) it did some damage to the opener's motor? I replaced both springs and checked the tension on both of them. The door closes completely to the floor when I close it manually; the tracks are clear and they operate smoothly. For the life of me I can't figure out why I cannot get my opener working properly.
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
It's probably something simple, check the plastic notched wheel at the end of the motor shaft and make sure that it's pushed all the way on to the shaft, one guy in the comments said his wheel was loose or off, if its off your machine won't travel more than 6 inches if it's too far back on the shaft it could cause the problem you are having. operate the door down then let it reverse and come back up then count the number of flashes the LED light on the back of your machine gives you...it's giving you a code as to whats wrong. it will be a sequence of flashes from 1 to 6. but push the slotted opto wheel all the way snugly on to the shaft first and make sure the small circuit brd that reads the opto wheel is on snug as well.
@ALLProGarageDoors8 жыл бұрын
Very...very doubtful that your door springs are causing this. One more thing you can try that might sound kind of strange but spray the back side of the wood jambs and or wood trim (on the outside... that your door travels down) with silicone or WD-40 if you see any burn marks your door has left on the back side of the wood from rubbing...do this first before ANYTHING else.

Mike... my sprocket snapped when the door was closed and my trolley is close to the opening of the door. I replaced the gear/sprocket.....In adjusting my limits how do I move the trolley to the Center? When I go to open the door the trolley travels about a foot into the garage and then stops and travels back towards the opening of the garage. I am guessing that I need to remove my repaired sprocket/gears an then manually move the chain and trolley to the middle prior to adjusting the limits. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

follow each wire into the wiring harness, make sure they are tight in the harness and the harness is snugged down.

Great Video! The gears were all out of whack on my Liftmaster opener after the plastic sprocket coupler broke. It would be cool if you could link this video to that problem. Once again, nice job - thanks for posting!

Peter Newman Thanks Pete! I’ve got it linked to the very end of the gear & sprocket video where I hope folks can find it. Glad it worked out for you!

At what point do you hook the garage door back into the trolley?
@ALLProGarageDoors6 жыл бұрын
as soon as you've made your limit adjustment and backed off the force control dials, then reconnect and test.

So I followed your instructions. However my issue is my trolley will only move 1 foot forward 1 foot backward. So I moved it to the middle of the rail and it will only go like 1 foot and then returns one foot. I have the limits suggested just like you showed in the video. Any ideas? I did replace my gear and that's when I had this issue arrive. Thanks for any help!

Check to make sure the black notched opto wheel is pressed all the way on the motor shaft.

All-Pro Quality Garage Doors Inc. Freaking genius dude! That is exactly what it was. I took it off and was turning to the shaft with a pair of vise grips to get the trolley where I wanted it. Bingo! Thank you so much man!

Good video, but it would be nice if you showed a little bit more about adjusting the pressure once you get the up and down limits set.
