In this All Sports History video we'll look back at what happened to the Seattle Pilots team when they ran into issues with their aging stadium, "Sick's Stadium", and how it eventually forced them into bankruptcy.
Here's what this "Seattle Pilots History" video covers:
After several years of trying to attract a Major League Baseball team to the city, Seattle finally got their team when the Pilots began play in 1969. So what exactly happened that led to the team moving away after only one season? In Today’s video we’ll take a look back at how the Pilots' issues with their aging stadium caused a serious financial strain on the team.
Only lasting one season, some might ask Seattle Pilots became what team exactly and what happened to this club? We'll start by taking a look back Seattle's earliest baseball teams, the Seattle Clamdiggers, Indians, Rainiers and eventually the Pilots. In 1938 businessman Emil Sick bought the Rainiers and helped turn the team into a championship club winning several Pacific Coast League titles throughout the 1940's and 50's. Sick also invested in the team by building a brand new stadium named, "Sick's Stadium" that would ultimately become home to the Seattle's first MLB team the Pilots. Seattle Pilots 1969 expansion would be joined by three other teams, the Montreal Expos, San Diego Padres, and the Kansas City Royals. Originally thought of as a temporary home (while the Pilots would attempt to get a new stadium built,), the team ran into issues with Sicks Stadium Seattle almost immediately durning their debut season in 1969. Problems with Seattle Pilots Sicks stadium's plumbing, poor sight lines, and barely enough seats to fill a major league stadium, cost the Pilots hundreds of thousands of dollars in their first season. Bleeding money, and poor attendance at Seattle Pilots games, the team's owners quickly looked to sell the team but ran into opposition from Washington States two senators who helped pursue legal action to stop the sale of the team. With all other avenues exhausted, the Pilots had no choice but to declare bankruptcy, where a court ruled that the club could be sold to car salesman Bud Selig (who then in turn moved the Pilots to Milwaukee). By the late 1970's, Seattle got a new brand new expansion club and stadium, the Seattle Mariners Kingdome. Seattle Pilots baseball lasted just one season in Seattle before becoming the Milwaukee Brewers, but their legacy lives on to this day, as the Brewers still wear the blue and gold of the original Pilots colors.
So what did you guys think about the Seattle Pilots move to Milwaukee and becoming the Brewers? Also, what did you think about Bud Selig almost buying the White Sox and moving them instead? Let me know in the comments below!

I was gutted when the Pilots left for Milwaukee. My dad, one of my younger brothers and I regularly to games that summer. My aunt was the nurse there at the stadium medical office. So she was able to provide free tickets for us whenever we wanted to go to a game. We recieved a couple of autographed baseballs and two baseball bats with autographs from the first baseman Don Mincher and Tommy Harper. Those were glory days for me.

Amazing video. I loved it. One thing you left out is the fact Seattle was not supposed to start playing until the 71 season which was the originally timeline for the AL expansion. Both NL teams were slated for 69 and this enraged KC baseball fans who just lost their team to Oakland and still had a strong support and history of baseball. Politicians pressured the MLB to move their start up and all 4 teams entered the league at the same time not only watering down the talent and Potential for a decent team but really made it impossible for Seattle to fix the stadium issue. They lost their team before they were originally planned to start.

In the 1968 Expansion Draft, The Pilots took a pretty good player in the name of Lou Piniella but traded him to KC just before opening day in 1969. He came back to Seattle as manager for ten seasons.

I lived in Alaska and the Pilots were the baseball we got in Alaska. The Pilots' games were on the radio on the weekends. I remember being told during spring training the Pilots would remain in Seattle one more year. I was relieved and then out of the blue, it was announced they were moving to Milwaukee. this was heartbreaking.

Growing up in Milwaukee, the Braves broke my heart. In 1970, when the Brewers arrived, I was 13. We didn’t know we had a baseball team until the 6:00 news the day before the opener. The team flew into Mitchell field, about a mile from my house, at about 10:30 pm. I set my alarm, and got up to go greet the team. I ran into my Dad, who was watching Carson, and got the “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” thing. I explained, and he said “Why didn’t you say so”. He came with me to walk the four blocks to Howell avenue to see the busses go by on their way to the Pfister. We may well be the first people to cheer for that team.

Now THAT'S a great reminiscence. And as I write this, the Dodgers are in Milwaukee, and Mookie Betts refuses to stay with the team at the Pfister, because he has heard that it's haunted.

Not only did San Diego and Seattle get expansion baseball teams at the same time, but they both got new NBA teams simultaneously. The Rockets didnt last long in SD before skipping to Houston. The Sonics, though were hugely popular in Seattle drawing record crowds in the early 1980s..in the mid 90s the Sonics got a newly furnished arena that was exactly what they asked for including a design that would preclude the NHL coming in. But a few years later, like the child who's tired of their Christmas gift by New Year's it wasnt good enough for them. When the city, county and state pointed out that it was too soon for them to have another new arena instead of being sold to people who would keep them in Seattle they were sold and moved to another city where thankfully they havent won a championship. Meanwhile the Kings were playing in the oldest arena in the league and not being supported by their community so a deal was made to sell the team and move it to Seattle. But the evil commissioner, who seemed to hate Seattle vetoed the deal. The Kings got a new arena. Sorry to go so off topic but the story needs to be known.

@@jswaggart01 I'm a nut, every spring in March or so I will pick up Ball Four and read it again to get ready for the new season. Jim was so flattered when I e-mailed him that years ago. I've been reading Ball Four for over 45 years now. I picked it up in a bookstore around 1976. The late Bill Freehan wrote a book also about the 1969 season called Behind the Mask that my Dad bought for me in 1970 when I was 8 and it was similar to Ball Four but much much calmer with few juicy details. The worse thing was McLain was selfish and an asshole who Boog Powell owned and Lolich was jealous and Mayo Smith knew shit about pitching. He had the great Johnny Sain as his pitching coach and Sain is probably the best pitching coach in history but he didn't believe in running the pitchers and he was always fighting management. Sain took off one day and the team was in a slump so Mayo Smith took the pitchers and ran their asses off. Sain returns the next day and the pitchers are all pissed off and he goes into Smith's office ripping his ass off. He said something like do we use my methods that had the best staff in 1968 and won a WS or your bullshit that had shitty Detroit staffs since 1946. Less than a month later Sain quit and Detroit finished a distant second to Baltimore. I still have Behind the Mask and it's ok but not funny like Ball Four is. The original Milwaukee American League team was also called the BREWERS. That team operated in Beertown for, if memory serves, one or two seasons before moving to ST. LOUIS where it took the original name of the CARDINALS, the BROWN STOCKINGS, and shortened it to BROWNS. Eventually, the team moved to BALTIMORE in 1954, and today, they are the hapless BALTIMORE ORIOLES. The name for the latter came from the NATIONAL LEAGUE team that played in BALTY in the 1890's for almost ten seasons. Then, when the WESTERN LEAGUE minor league applied for MAJOR LEAGUE STATUS, the loop changed its name to the AMERICAN LEAGUE and had a team in B-MORE known as the ORIOLES. However, the team did not draw well, and after one season, moved to NY CITY where they were first known as the HIGHLANDERS for their relatively speaking, much higher elevation at now defunct Hilltop Park, not the POLO GROUNDS #1, 2, 3, or 4 ballpark location. Eventually, that team took the nickname that the sportswriters gave them, and dropped HIGHLANDERS for the YANKEES, on their way to moving to the BRONX area of NEW YORK CITY.. Finally, in the days before farm clubs, minor league teams were virtually all not owned, nor ran by major league teams and not affiliated player-wise. Such was the case for the new startups, the MILWAUKEE BREWERS IN THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION(defunct today, only an independent league carries the first part of the name= A.A. of INDEPENDENT BASEBALL CLUBS= adding "Independent"..that early AMER. ASSN was named after a defunct major league competitor of the early NATIONAL LEAGUE...a few of today's MAJ. LEAGUE teams began in the A.A. of the 1880's and early1890's..) in the very early 1900's until the affilations began in the '30's, into the 1950's when the BRAVES NL MLB'ers came to town from BOSTON and the MILWAUKEE BREWERS moved to ATLANTA(the Braves future home beginning in 1966) and became one of their top farm teams; and, the BALTIMORE ORIOLES who were an independent MINOR LEAGUE team until they signed a player development contract in the 1930's, on their way to being in the old INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE(today called TRIPLE-A EAST)affiliated teams' league. In the early 19-teens one of their young players was G.H."BABE" RUTH.. The Orioles paid better than most Maj.LB teams did, and its one reason why HALL PITCHER, LEFTY GROVE did not debut in the majors until he was in his late twenties. One more thing, when ORIOLES third baseman player-manager, JOHN MCGRAW left to go to NEW YORK in the NL, he brought with him many of his old ORIOLES 1890's players. He eventually retired and strictly was a manager for the NY GIANTS, the most successful NL CLUB in the early portion of the first decade of the 20th.century. Later, they changed their colors from blue and red to black and orange. Was that a tribute to the ORIOLES? I don't know. And, if you didn't already, now you know the rest of the hiSTORY.. @@aspenrebel, did you know that the BRAVES club began as an openly professional non-minor league (MAJOR LEAGUE baseball as a name was not officially called that until the 1903 agreement between the NL AND A.L. to leave each others under contract players alone) outfit in CINCY as the RED STOCKINGS in 1869 in the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PRO BASE BALL(two words back then) LEAGUE(known beginning in 1870 as the NATIONAL ASSOC.) a league that spun off of the pro division of the NATL. AASOC. OF BASE BALL PLAYERS, the latter was mostly an amateur league of scattered leagues and independent teams, even though some players were paid below the table; did you know that? After a fire destroyed the CINCY ballpark in 1870, the team suspended play for the entire season and moved to..BOSTON in 1871 where in the NAT. ASSN. it was known as the BOSTON RED STOCKINGS, only to change their name to among other things, BEES, and finally to BRAVES in the early 1900's. The change in 1912 came as a result of a new owner, a Democrat city councilman in NY CITY who came from the corrupt political machine there known as TAMMANY HALL. TAMMANY was a name derived from a LENAPE tribe "NATIVE" CHIEF named TAMINEND. He was ruthless to the point of killing members of his own tribe if they got in his way, and helped to murder other tribes' villagers as he stole their lands and expanded his own. The BIG CHIEF INDIAN HEAD LOGO was adopted by TAMMANY HALL DEMS. Gee, I wonder why, and I wonder if the DEM party has changed its ruthless reputation? 🤔... Meanwhile, the BOSTON BRAVES, then REDSKINS of the NFL who initially shared their home field with the BASEBALL BRAVES/BEES, called themselves at first= BRAVES because of their owner G.P. MARSHALL's liking of the name, showing a sharing of the ballpark with the NL baseballers, only to convert to REDSKINS to remove the eventual confusion that they were actually fully connected as a business with the BASEBALL BRAVES. The BRAVES may have also threatened to sue the football club, too. And, not able to be fiscally successful and to get out of the BRAVES shadow, the team left for WASHINGTON D.C. just a few seasons later in 1937, later changing their name to COMMANDERS, which was supposedly an avoidance move for not offending "native" tribes, while paying tribute to the president of the U.S. and the commanders in the nation's military, the same military whose 19th. century ARMY COMMANDERS shot and killed "native" INDIANS. NOW, that is irony. A couple of more things: INDIANS is not a derogatory term because it came from ITALIAN BORN SPANISH explorer COLUMBUS and his men in his and their journals, saying that Carribean/CEN. AMERICAN natives were "GENTE EN DIOS"= PEOPLE OF GOD OR GODLIKE PEOPLE. Its a myth that COLUMBUS named them due to his false impression that he was in INDIA. There was no country called INDIA in 1492. It was called HINDUSTAN back then. The conquering Brits centuries later after the country went through several name changes, called it INDIA because most artifacts showed that centuries before, the country's first folks came from the country's INDUS RIVER REGION. The Indus river's name likely came from their hINDU religion. That's right, the EAST INDIAN TRADING COMPANY which began after COLUMBUS laid down the trade routes and mapped them out for SPAIN, came from "EN DIOS", not "INDIA". The WEST INDIES island group in the Carribean comes from EN DIOS(OF GOD). And, one more thing..the A.L. BOS. RED SOX eventually called themselves that after BEANEATERS, PILGRIMS, RUSTLERS, etc, were used as their nicknames. That change happened shortly before the BEES/RED STOCKINGS changed to BRAVES in the second decade of the 20th.century. And, a "native" Indian group is now suing the COMMANDERS for wiping out the nickname REDSKINS and the face of an actual well known INDIAN CHIEF who was alive in 1971=that Indian face was on the team's helmet from '71 until three or four seasons ago. The " native" group suing also loves the name that.. THEY CALL THEMSELVES- REDSKINS. They take pride in it. The ones that fought to change INDIANS to GUARDIANS, and REDSKINS TO another name that eventually ended up as.. COMMANDERS, are a lefty INDIAN/"native" outfit funded by groups connected with..tada!= GEORGE SOROS/ GYORGI SCHWARTZ, who backs Dems. Now, you know the other part of the story. And.. No group in NORTH AMERICA is of a true a "native" distinction. Archaeologists have proven that landbridges above water back then at the straits, and dried papyrus boats from EURASIA, ASIA, and some MIDDLE EAST- EURO regions actually brought the so-called natives here. Yep.. Did you know that?

Great video! The 1969 expansion to 4 new cities including Seattle was the first major league expansion I had lived through. I was 11 and loved baseball and it was amazing seeing these new cities come onboard. I caught a broadcast of a Pilots game by long distance radio (I don't recall which team they were playing, but I'm sure I picked it up through their hometown's station, as I could not get West Coast AM stations.) The move to Milwaukee was unstandably a disappointment to Seattle fans, but it gave the city time to get the dome built for the Mariners. And Bud Selig immediately paid off all the Pilots' debts, getting them out of bankruptcy, which also opened the way for the Mariners. A good deal for all. One note, around 7:30 you say the Pilots' onwership "overestimated" the time it would take to expand the stadium to 30,000 seats. What you meant is they underestimated it, not realizing how long it would take. Just a constructive tip. You did a great job on this. Very thorough about a complex situation.

As a historical footnote, the next pro sports team to arrive in Seattle after the Pilots left was the Sounders in the old North American Soccer League in 1974. The Sounders played in Memorial Stadium for their first two years and moved to the Kingdome (the supposed new domed stadium for the Pilots) in 1976 where they played until they folded in 1983 and the NASL folded itself after the 1984 season. However the Sounders returned in 1994 in the A League (now the USL Championship) and joined MLS (basically the successor of the old NASL) in 2009.

My only memory of the Pilots was watching a game on TV where Joe Sparma, a pitcher for my team, the Tigers, carried a no-hitter into the 9th. Unfortunately, he allowed a hit that inning but the Tigers still won pretty handily. It's memorable because I was just a kid and had never seen a no-hitter before. Plus, Joe Sparma was an okay starting pitcher but he was known for being sort of wild. I can't recall how many batters he walked that day but I imagine it was more than a few. It's strange that I should even remember that, seeing how it was more than 50 years ago but that memory, for whatever reason, has always been with me. Oh well, it's hard not be nostalgic about baseball.

I looked and found that the 1961 HOUSTON BUFFS in the AAA AMERICAN ASSOC., a CHICUBS farm team had six guys playing a little to a lot with the MLB expansion 1962 HOUSTON COLT .45's.. DAVE GIUSTI, PIDGE BROWNE, JIM CAMPBELL(NOT THE SAME GUY WHO WAS THE DETROIT G.MGR), J.C. HARTMAN who was 19 in '61, 20 in '62, and later retired to become a policeman in HOUSTON. RON DAVIS-not the NY YANKS relief pitcher in the 70's and father of recent MLB'ER, IKE DAVIS- and DAVE ROBERTS-not the same guy as the future '70's ASTROS pitcher, or the future high draftpick third baseman of the PADRES-. I wonder if any PADRES in 1969 were on the '68 PHILLIES FARMTEAM IN SD IN THE PACIFIC COAST LEAGUE? And, what do you know.. STEVE ARLIN was on the '68 PCL's SD PADS and '69 MLB SD PADS. ARLIN was a grandson of HAROLD ARLIN, the very first MLB BROADCASTER, ever, working for KDKA RADIO IN PITTSBURGH in Aug. of 1921, less than a year after he was the first U.S. RADIO NEWSCASTER to read presidential election returns. What about the 1968 SEATTLE ANGELS AND '69 MARINERS? Yep, MARTY PATTIN, JIM" BULLDOG/"BALL FOUR" BOUTON, and GUS GIL..were on both. No SHORT SEASON CLASS-A NW LEAGUE 1976 SEATTLE RAINIERS on the '77 MLB MARINERS.. In 1997, the TAMPA YANKEES or ST. PETERSBURG DEVIL RAYS did not share any players with the 1998 TAMPA D-RAYS.. The 1997 PHOENIX FIREBIRDS did not have any shared players with the 1998 ARIZ. DIAMONDBACKS.. I don't count '61 MINNESOTA TWINS/'60 Minneapolis Millers or, St. PAUL Saints players. I also don't count the 1971 DALLAS-FT.WORTH SPURS and the '72 TEXAS RANGERS since like the TWINS the RANGERS were not an expansion club. I also do not count the 1965 ATLANTA CRACKERS and the '66 ATL. BRAVES. There were no minor league teams in L.A. IN '60, IN MONTREAL IN '68, NYORK CITY IN '61, KANSAS CITY IN '68, nor TORONTO in 1976..in addition although, I won't count it because the A's were not an expansion club when they moved from KC TO OAK..there was not a minor league team in OAKLAND IN 1967..

That the stadium was woefully inept and was nowhere near being close to sufficient as the 1969 season approached is proof-positive. No water to flush toilets, no water for players to take showers, and one wonders why the city lost its team. Clearly, moving the team to Milwaukee was the right move. The San Diego Padres were the Cincinnati Reds Triple-A team in the 1960's (Pete Rose, Tony Perez, Tommy Helms, Lee May were at one time San Diego Padres....they and several others were the foundation of the Big Red Machine of the 1970's). The Reds ownership threatened to move the team to San Diego unless the City/County built the team a new stadium. Thus Riverfront Stadium, a duel purpose stadium, was built to house both MLB's Cincinnati Reds and the new NFL expansion team Cincinnati Bengals (with Paul Brown as part owner). When he fired as head coach of the Cleveland Browns by owner Art Modell, Paul Brown retained much of the teams equipment/helmets/jerseys/etc. which he in turn used for his start up Bengals jerseys and helmets (removing the stripes and adding the word "Bengals" in simple block script). On a separate note: Riverfront Stadium wasn't completed in time for the Cincinnati Bengals first two seasons, so the teams home field was Nippert Stadium, home of the Cincinnati Bearcats football team.

Here's a few good suggestions: What happened to the Original Winnipeg Jets? How did the Tampa Bay Buccaneers win the 1995 NFL draft? What happened with the Arena Football League? What happened with the Alliance of American Football? What happened to the St. Louis Rams? What happened to the Minnesota North Stars?

I was looking at the sports page of the Anchorage Times. There was a picture of a sexy young woman with a big smile squatting over a pristine trash can and dumping her Seattle Pilots pennant. I wondered why she wasn't keeping it.

Interesting video. Seems very odd to me that Seattle was granted an expansion franchise without a better plan in place to sustain long-term functionality. The city and owners clearly were not ready for such an undertaking.

True. The Sorianos soon ran out of money and couldnt find anyone to bail them out. Sicks Stadium was only supposed to serve as the home for a couple or three years until the new doomed stadium opened. But there was so much legal wrangling about the dome it was delayed several years. One irony is that in its day Sicks was regarded as the finest minor league park in the nation.

My Mother was from Brooklyn. She never accepted the Los Angeles Dodgers. To her they were "Dem Bums" from Brooklyn. The Giants left NY for San Francisco, but the were replaced with the Mets. Brooklyn didn't get another team, and never will.

Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, Randy Johnson Gaylord Perry, Edgar Martinez, Ichiro Suzuki but zero championships. Also the NFL Seattle Seahawks were not the first Seahawks in the NFL. The Miami Seahawks played in the NFL in the 1946 and 1947 season. They played at Burdines Stadium which would become the Orange bowl. Today the site is Marlins Park. The Seahawks moved to Baltimore and became the Colts. Today they're the Cleveland Browns. I myself was born and raised in NYC but now live in Miami, Florida and am still a lifelong Yankee fan.

9:03…$350?! For a ticket to a random Pilots game in 1969?! I’m assuming since it says row 1 and it’s a field box it’s probably behind home plate but that’s what it costs today for some teams.

Little known fact. The Pilots name may have come from a farm team that was assigned to them. A class A team in Clinton, Iowa already had the name Pilots. I grew up in that town which was right on the Mississippi river. Through a contest the name Pilots was born. Seattle always said they didn't steal it but that was too much of a coincidence to everyone in Clinton.
