So I took a big trip today up to a Oneida and back to get my new puppy dog and the DriveWise is still plugged into my garage and it did not register at all on my trip today so I will give it a few more days and see what happens if I get a notification for Allstate or not. I was lied to by an Allstate associate about this program. I asked if the device would track my speed and he said that it would not. They record hard braking events, acceleration events and speeds in excess of 80 MPH and then raise your rates if you have many of those. So even if you brake for another person pulling out in front of you or for a deer, that's logged as a high risk event. He heard me clearly when asking about speeding(I drive a 911 so it won't be driven like a Prius). He deceived me. I'm now paying more per month than my previous auto insurance that I could've stayed with at a lower rate. You have been warned.

I don't think Allstate has a database of all intersections that are stop signs (vs traffic signals which they wouldn't know whether the light was red or green). I've wondered if there is a database of street speed limits. That seems like that could exist (and Allstate could see if you're driving the speed limit, 10% over, etc.). From what I can tell, they're looking at erratic speed accelerate, brake. It's definitely more than the 3 "events" they tell you about. I've seen a list of the details they harvest. There's speed "bands" (10mph ranges) and how much time you spend in each. There's an acceleration event (8mph in one second). I've been on Mwise for a year & like it (I went through a phase of being offended). I'm paying more than half what I did with the opaque, unlimited miles policy. Some aspects of the app (especially in its Dwise state) seem poorly done. But, I'm convinced this is the way of the future. Astate is in the process of winnowing drivers. Show how you drive, pay for your risk, and everyone else in the opaque/unlimited risk pool will pay their share without your subsidy to it. Their rates are going up, mine isn't. More people will be "motivated" to show how they drive and escape that risk pool. It's happening now. Someone reported that they were notified that their Dwise usage will be used to calculate their semi-annual premium (not just the rebate motivation). The more people who reveal themselves, the more Astate will know about the drivers in the risk pool who don't. I was always in that risk pool. Now Astate knows the risk I contributed (very little). By showig I'm not the "mayhem guy" they know more about the remaining drivers in that pool. Insurance is all about actuarial data, nothing personal. This creates a huge trove of data to assess risk.

@@TheOriginalAndysGarage Look for "Can an insurance OBDII telemetry device (Allstate Drivewise) damage my UZJ100?" (June, 2015). Post #18 contains the telemetry that the Mwise dongle collects, how it's used. It's interesting. That was 9 years ago. It may not be accurate today, but I would assume any changes would be more inclusive, not less. Personally, I don't care about the being monitored aspect. But, I understand those who do. It feels like we're heading towards a life like those in an asian country enjoy ("social credits" and whether you can ride the bus or not due to not fitting in). I think we're reaching a point where opting out of things like Mwise will reveal something undesirable about you. You'll be pressured to do it because good people do it. I see a Great Reconciling happening where, if you use an alternative search engine that doesn't track you, that will factor into the cost you pay for insurance, credit, etc. We're all going to be open books and making choices based upon "fitting in." (How can I say I don't care? I don't think it's in my control. I can resist it and pay more, and be obsessed with resisting. Or, let society do what it will. I.e., if this is bad, then there needs to be legislation limiting reconciliation of a person's living telemetry. The problem isn't so much one app, or one insight into your telemetry. It's the market to reconcile all those into a picture of who you are that people will pay for. That's where it starts sounding like a "social credit" system, where w're motivated to be good do-bees. The herd. I'm not going to resist good products like Mwise just because there's a larger problem in this regard. I can't address the larger problem, it won't be addressed by me resisting the good things. It's a societal issue. An issue of regulation. I fully support that. I think hair-on-fire resistance doesn't get us there. It feels good doing it. But, not changing anything.).

Why don't you just cancel this policy? Seems like too much aggravation and unless you are doing something illegal, who really cares where you go or where your car is located? On the contrary, if something happens to you, you can be located. It's kind of a glass half full type scenario.

@@TheOriginalAndysGarage I've used Mwise for a year. I was having that reaction too. But, I've come to see it differently. I was driving too fast to avoid having to hit my breaks (to avoid an accident). I was following too closely (because assertive/aggressive drivers will race ahead and cut in front of me) to avoid having to hit my breaks (to avoid an accident). You know? It's perspective. It's natural to come at it as "I've driven like this for 188 years, and it's never been a problem. Now they're saying it's a problem." I went through that too. But, ultimately, it's a matter of when, not if. It's tempting fate in a way that driving 10% under the limit doesn't, and maintaining 50% more car-length (per 10mph) doesn't. It literally costs me another couple minutes of travel time to not drive like a Sigma male? I save money. What's the big deal? For me, it was clear that it was ego. I've always driven as I do, I shouldn't have to change. I'm being judged. I don't like it. And, all for 2 minutes travel time? I'm saving 70% compared to my semi-annual premium. But, "it's personal." :) If you're in the insurance biz, that's actuarial data. Her'es a driver motivated by their identity more than getting with the program. (All because of 2 minutes). IMO, D/Mwise are great for people practicing mindfulness, the precepts of buddhism (that we cause our suffering in our own minds). It's an amazing tool to step back and examine what's really going on when you drive. It's the best 2-minute expense you could have. It doesn't have to be personal. When I yeilded to the program (rather than trying to avoid sudden breaking which is a tip of the iceberg of what's being monitored), I feel happier driving. I'm not engaged with other unconscious people working out their egos while driving. It's really nice on many levels (not just saving money).

My airbag warning light came on about a year after using Mwise. I immediately thought of the complaints I've seen that the device damaged a car's control module/brain. But, it turned off the next day. I wondered if perhaps Astate caused it to come on, to see how my driving might change when "triggered." :) That sounds paranoid, but I think there's some of that kind of "getting into your head" going on with this device. When I used the Dwise app (before my Mwise device arrived), that thing was alerting me while driving ("can't locate trip"). I got the impression it was a test to see if I'd look at my phone while driving. The reason I thought that is because when I resolved to not look, the alerts were gone when I arrived at my destination and looked. It was like it never happened. The only way to see what it was was to look at it as it happened. Something felt gaslighting about that to me. I even wondered if the dongle has a mic and they can listen in. "Ok, I'm ready. Turn on the airbag warning.... oh wow, he's having a tantrum, hitting his dog...." If I were in the insurance biz, I'd do that. This is legalized gambling. If the dealer has an edge, by all means take it. This is like the ultimate "counting cards" for them. (I like it. I'm saving over 50%. It took awhile to get used to.).

FYI: Three years later this is more than just a rebate for letting Astate see you drive. Astate has notified customers (may depend on the state you live in) that they will use Dwise telemetry for determining semi-annual policy rates. This is definitely going to turn into good drivers (the drivers who don't mind being watched, or changing their habits) getting a break, and everyone else who remains opaque in the traditional (unlimited miles) risk pool paying more. This is already starting to be a self-fulfilling trend where rates are going up for the traditional pool, causing more people to lose their principles about privacy (to save money). That leads to rates going up in the traditional pool. Insurance is all about paying for risk. If you're in the opaque pool for 10 years, and then reveal that you drive very smoothly (not erratic acceleration/braking), and 20% of the miles the average driver does. Not only does Astate know a vast amount about your risk, but they also know much more about everyone else in the opaque pool (that they're more responsible for the risk of that pool than you are). They know the risk of that pool, and that you weren't the norm. I think this will be a disruptive technology which might be softened by self-driving cars (remove the egoic driver from the equation).
