We bought a scan tool on your advice quite a while back. Fortunately we had it with us when we were traveling with the class C RV on a Sprinter chassis. I was in a shop having my tire replaced and a young man next to me and I got talking. He was trying to resurrect a 1995 car with a bad A/C, I told him he was better off buying a car later than 1995 when they changed over to the new coolant, because the no one is importing Freon any more and it's almost impossible to find anyone able or willing. I told him that a conversion would cost around $2K and an older car probably wasn't worth it unless it was a classic of some kind. I went on to tell him that I had just gone through the used car shopping process after watching a lot of Scotty's advice on inspections, engine and transmission 101's, and scanner tools. He asked the owner how much a conversion would cost. "About $2K." I told him about Scotty and he checked on his phone and seemed quite eager to view the huge list of videos, including the one on scan tools like this one. The manager of the shop overheard me and said, "I've got to stop you there. I can't tell you how many times some guy comes in hear with a home diag from one of those cheap tools, and it's totally wrong." I asked, "You use a professional $5K scanner right?" "Yes, I do." "Of course; you own a shop, and you use it nearly daily, so you can justify it. I just need something to show me any red flags, which my cheap tool did great. I caught a guy who tried clearing his check-engine light, and another who had some weird readings that a test drive confirmed was not accelerating right. I skipped both those vehicles. How much would you charge to check out a car for me if I brought one in here?" "A hundred bucks." "That's reasonable, but I checked out ten cars before I picked one. I couldn't afford to bring them all in here to take advantage of your pro scanner. That tool was well worth it to me." The young man was still busy checking out the list of Scotty's videos like someone who had just discovered a guru.

That 20 seconds headlight on is actually a really good simple test of the battery. If you have a borderline dead battery, turning on the headlights without the alternator running drains the battery extremely fast (it's 2 light bulbs draining about 4amps each, nothing else drains that much on the car) and you can see the voltage drop from 13+ down to 12 in a few seconds. If you then try to crank the engine, the battery can already be drained enough that you can barely start the engine, if at all. I know this because I went through this mess. Oh, and to give you credits. The bad battery was also the cause of rough idling and bad acceleration because the spark plugs weren't properly provided with stable voltage since the battery has a buffer function in the overall system and the alternator isn't a reliable stable source of voltage.

My 220amp h.o alternator on my 1.8l laughs at the accusation of not being a reliable source of amperage
@Asto5083 жыл бұрын
@@ert-wert Your point is granted. I missed to point out that it may also just be an issue with weak or bad alternators in conjunction with bad batteries and if the alternator is dimensioned in a such way that it can easily dish out all the energy needed ten it probably won't cause issues. But most people have factory alternators which are much weaker than 220A. The displacement of your engine is rather irrelevant in that topic btw
@ert-wert3 жыл бұрын
@@Asto508 smaller engine - smaller belt - smaller alternator??? Thats what I was figuring
@Asto5083 жыл бұрын
@@ert-wert it’s about the pulley dimensions and those don’t really scale up that much from smaller to larger engines. The difference between 1l and 3l+ engines is sometimes not even 30% in crankshaft pulley diameter. Alternator pulleys are mostly also the same size. So, 1000 rpm on a larger engine generates not much more rpm on the alternator than a small 1.0l engine.

Lots of dishonest people will disconnect the battery before you go check out the car they are selling . That ( temporarily) clears the check engine light UNTIL the monitors have time to reset them . A scanner will tell you if the Computer Monitors are set or not . Dont buy a car if the monitors are not set or you may have codes show up once they re-set .
@aaronthomas61553 жыл бұрын
That doesn't work on OBD2 vehicles. Codes are stored in NVRAM. Disconnecting the battery won't clear NVRAM. The NV part literally means "non-volatile".... The codes actually have to be cleared and a quality scan tool (such as an OBDLink LX or MX/MX+ with OBDLink software) can tell you how many miles the vehicle has travelled since codes were cleared, or how many times the vehicle has been started since codes were cleared.
@jayhockley88412 жыл бұрын

I have a story that fits this video perfectly. My car has 325K miles on it. It's a 1996 Ford Probe SE. It has two catalytic converters. A primary and a secondary. The O2 sensors only monitor the Primary inside the front engine exhaust manifold. Anyway, the secondary converter started rattling and the car was showing a P0421 cat below efficiency code so I had it replaced. The code remained so I figured that the primary converter with 325K miles was going out...it's old. That cost 1000's and that's if you could find a good one. I ignored the code because VA doesn't perform emission testing and drove for years with that code. One day my muffler started getting holes in it so I had it replaced. When I got the car back after the muffler replacement, it had lots more power. I asked to see my old muffler and shook it. All kinds of white chalky dust came out of it. Come to find out, the secondary cat had blown chunks of debris in the muffler restricting the exhaust system and the computer was reading the improper flow through the primary converter as a converter issue. The light has stayed off and the car runs great now. So the converter was never the issue. It was the muffler plumb on the other end that was to blame the whole time.
@josephtrunk3565 Жыл бұрын
I need to investigate this one as well. 05 Vue 274,000 miles has been throwing this code. Resetting it and it goes away for a while, but it comes back. Thanks for sharing your experience, greatly appreciated.

Way back in the early 60s when I was an apprentice in a university electronics lab (where we built/tested and repaired everything from in-house built to commercial equipment) the first rule of fault finding was: Test the voltage levels: If the power supply is bad then nothing else will be working properly and therefore fault-finding isn't likely to be successful!

Awesome video Scotty, I drive a Volkswagen. Naturally, it has many electronic bits. I left the headlights on with keys in the ignition, wile I was cleaning the interior. I came back to a dead battery. I Jumped the thing and the airbags were disabled. Had a message on the cluster screen. The local Toyota dealership wanted to charge me $100 bucks to reset it. I had to drive 50 miles to reset and test the bloody thing. Luckily Volkswagen did it for free. Still that tool would of saved me a headache.

One of my friends bought an Autel very simple one, I read the instructions and bleed his brakes with it, adjust his head lights and fix a problem with the brake pedal. He got a Buick Enclave, sad part of it he just got it back from GM dealer and they charge him over 300 bucks just for diagnostic.

Yeah dealers cost way to much due to Government Taxes/Fees and Mandates on those businesses. My dad moved to Apple Valley back in the 90's and wanted to get a job. He went to a local mechanic shop with two bays and no cars to be worked on. The owner said he really needed him but couldn't afford him. My dad was confused until the shop owner started listing all the California Laws that ACTUALLY made it financially impossible for him to hire my dad. So may dad said, well rent me the two stalls and I'll open a shop under my own name. The owner laughed and said sure. My dads shop, once word got out, always had cars waiting to be worked on. Dad did complain about the California Tax and Fee laws that made it almost impossible to make money working on cars. He had to live in a little run down shack just to be able to pay the bills. Yep shops and dealers cost a lot. So most of that $300.00 bucks didn't even go to the owner, it went into employee pay checks, benefits and Government Taxes and Fees to keep the shop open. That's why I do my own repairs unless it's a transmission or rear end. If you really want to find out who's ripping off customers go ask a business owner with employees how much of that bill is Government Taxes and Fees. Best Wishes and Blessings. Keith Noneya
@mark43473 жыл бұрын
@@keithnoneya But you have to pay your employees and pay to license your business. Of course only a small percentage goes to the owner, depending on shop rate and his management abilities. @@mark4347 I agree you have to pay your employees and pay license fees to open a business in the US. Scan tools are a must have item! It's been getting bloody cold here in Australia of late, and my car has started having this weird issue in where the automatic headlights are turning off the moment the key is pulled from the ignition. Through using my Bluetooth OBD2 tool and a battery alternator tester I was able to work out that it's the cold mornings putting the hurt on my battery resulting in a low voltage trigger on my BEM in which it disables my auto headlight courtesy timer as the car thinks the battery is bad. The battery is fine however, still reads 640 of 650 cold cranking amps, it's just that my dedicated LPG vehicle doesn't like the really cold mornings...

At Scotty’s recommendation I bought one of those Autel scan tools, and I have to say that it is a pleasure to use and shows me a LOT of information about my cars. I got the cheaper one, so it doesn’t have bi-directional capability which means the annual updates subscription is cheaper. That is one point I don’t recall Scotty making - the more expensive the scan tool, the more expensive the updates to it can be, and can run into many hundreds of dollars annually for those over-$1000 models.
