German Bread Dumpling Recipe: alltastesgerman.com/german-br...
One of the most famous German side dishes are bread dumplings. They are easy to make and are a wonderful opportunity to make use out of rolls that are not soft enough anymore. Bread dumplings are the perfect side dish to Sauerbraten, goulash, Rouladen and all kinds of saucy dishes. Try out some of our traditional German food recipes.

My Mom made the Dumplings with Pork chops. Spread Sauerkraut over the cut up Dumplings and topped with Gravy. Yum

So different that my mom made. She had no onions or parsley and made a batter of eggs milk and flour first and folded in the bread cubes. We had them for xmas dinner every year! Thanks for showing me this alternative way

@@AllTastesGerman Today is Saturday and I just got home from my Saturday Lunch Club. My German Bread Dumplings from this video was a hit. Everyone loved it. I did add mince sausages to the recipe. However, during the process of making this, I've learned that, the written instructions say to "Cut rolls and onions into small cubes and add to a large bowl." DO NOT PUT THEM BOTH INTO THE SAME BOWL. Put the cut rolls and onion into SEPARATE bowl. I made this mistake and had to spent 15 minutes separating the two. And also, make the dumpling the size of a quarter. Once they're in the water, they will expand to the size of a tennis ball. I love this recipe and I will make it again because it's just so damn simple and tasty. Never knew German food could be so delicious. Thank you for this video.

Oh I love these! I’m German and in my family we roast the bread crumbs in a pan to add some spice (Is that how you say it? I’m not sure ^^’ ) also yes they’re great with mushrooms:)

I love bread dumplings, and I always hope for some left-over dumplings. They are excellent fried up in a little oil (cut in pieces) with some egg.

I don't know what I did wrong, but when I carefully put the formed dumpling into the simmering water, it all came apart like a bath bomb! I ended up scooping it out of the now soup and reforming into balls, squeezing out the water. I salvaged by baking it for about 20-30 minutes and they came out salty but ok.

Honestly sounds like not enough egg. In German dumplings of multiple kinds, you tend to realise the eggs are there to get everything to stay together as the egg in the mix will harden as it hits the boiling water.

Thank you so much for watching and asking this question. It is a traditional recipe from the South of Germany, but depending on the housewife it was made with or without onions and or parsley. I guess it was just depending on the preferences of the family. This recipe is my personal favorite, but you could just leave the onions out.

This is only the basic version of that recipe. Every houswife adds her special herbs or even bacon bits to the recipe. You could experiment what your personal preference is.

It depends on how old and what brand your bread is. I would start to use only 4 eggs and 1 cup of milk and then add additional eggs and liquid as necessary. With this method you will be on the safe side.

Ich danke Ihnen für dieses Rezeptvideo. mein oma ist aus österreich. Ich komme aus dem Vereinigten Königreich. Ich weiß nicht, wo sie es verwenden würde, aber sie verwendete traditionell Schmalz in ihren Knödeln. Können Sie diesbezüglich beraten?

Vielen Dank für Ihre Antwort auf meine Frage. Ich denke, jeder hat verschiedene Arten, seine Rezepte zu machen. Ich habe mich gefragt, ob Sie in Zukunft ein Videorezept machen könnten, wie man süße Knödel wie Aprikosen oder Erdbeeren macht. Diese sind offensichtlich ganz anders als die herzhaften Brotknödel und erfordern Quark, den ich von Grund auf neu machen muss. Aprikosenknödel sind der Favorit meiner Nan und ich versuche im Moment, traditionelle Rezepte zu machen, damit ich ihr helfen kann, sich näher zu Hause zu fühlen. Ich würde mich sehr freuen, wenn Sie uns Ihre Methoden zur Herstellung süßer Knödel mitteilen könnten, wenn dies ein Rezept ist, mit dem Sie vertraut sind! hoffe es geht dir gut. Das ist lustig, ich habe nämlich genau die Knödel mit Aprikosen auf meinem Filmplan. Man nennt diese auch Marillenknödel (das Ur-Rezept stammt aus Österreich). Ich werde das Rezept bald hier veröffentlichen. Herzlichen Dank für die Idee und liebe Grüße! P.S. Dein Deutsch is super!

You can serve them with all kinds of main dishes like pork or beef roasts, goulash, Sauerbraten or creamy mushrooms called "Rahmschwammerl". You can find a variety of recipes for these main dishes on our channel.

You can use any white bread or rolls. Best is if the bread is a couple of days old.

Thank you for the great question. The dumplings freeze very well. Just add the frozen dumpling to simmering hot salt water. When the pop up on the surface they will be done.

I get a few loaves of bread every week for free, UNCUT. I try to cut them but sometimes it ends up a mess coz the middle can be too soft for bread knife cutting (instead of machine cut). I will DEFINITELY use probably a simpler version of this somehow. Likely involving a food processor because that's the lazy single guy way. Blast the hell out of it.

It's great that you are able to get free loaves of bread every week, but I can understand how cutting them can be a bit challenging, especially if they are not machine-cut. Using a food processor to make breadcrumbs is definitely a quick and easy way to go, and it's always good to find shortcuts that work for you.

Great question. Yes, they freeze very well. I always do several batches and freeze them. Just let them thaw at room temperature and either heat them in the microwave or slice them and fry in butter.
