I was the fighter in this game, to anyone wondering; several attempts to talk to the DM by several players were made. He just threw insults and accusations assuming we wouldn't talk to each other about the hostility. I got fed up with the DMs NPCs and told them off for the arrogant desire to belittle us, he announced he would close his game and server in two days after that session. I pointed out we wouldn't miss the constant attacking players and dm was quick to say "I'm sorry you felt I was attacking you". I replied "no, they didn't 'feel' attacks, they WERE attacks and we can each post the messages in chat and explain how they are if you want". Once he realized his behavior was public he shut his server down fast. Now we all play together with Bard/Paladin as our DM and everything DND has been amazing.

I'm a grumpy old DM/player. From what I understand, I think you guys are a good bunch of players. For you to stick together and find a new DM, all you have to do is talk to each other. I'm sure a player can be a good DM or know a good one. DND is a team game. A good team, i.e. people who like to interact, is much rarer than a good DM.

So at face value the whole concept of the campaign, story wise and what not sounded like an epic adventure. That was poorly handled and way over-powered. If the DM dialed things back or at the very least offered ways to beat the overpowered foes in a crafty way that would have been pretty sweet.
@Derginator
@Derginator 2 жыл бұрын
This is my last dm dialed up to 15/10. Every session was a 60-100 minute combat encounter and us teleporting around instead of actually traveling. If we tried to RP amongst ourselves we got eye rolls and if we RPed with a NPC it’d be a jerk for no reason at all. Like “I’d like to buy that wizard hat” “why do you need a wizard hat you look too dumb to be a wizard?” “Cause I have the gold to buy it. Do you want my business or not?” This campaign is currently in “hiatus” and I think it’s gonna just never resume. Too bad I liked the OoA Paladin I made. Here’s to better campaigns ahead.

Vecna is a God from Oerth - the world of Greyhawk. From what OP says, they're in Toril, the world of Forgotten Realms. Dafuq is a God from an entirely different Prime Material Plane doing there? Getting killed? That said, I'd say the best solutions are: 1) sell all the magic items to purchase a sphere of annihilation, then step into it; 2) pay a wizard to cast time travel, bring in a Soul Devourer from D&D4, let it perma-kill the characters (yes, Soul Devourers do exactly that - they perma-kill their victims); 3) find one of the remaining Gods, ask to be brought to the presence of Great Ao, Toril's Overgod (basically a God for Gods), then bitchslap him until he's good and angry; 4) find Tiamat, french kiss her; 5) get a bag of holding, get a portable hole, put one inside the other. The DM will probably say "That would kill you all!" - to which OP and the rest of the party should say "And your point is?" or, more to the point, "Exactly." Nothing like mass suicide to bring a point to bear. Or, possibly, choose another one to be DM, then inform the rest of the team with the original DM there. Then inform him that his services are no longer required, but thanks for his time. ...or just walk.

sounds like the guy is either a total asshole or very overzealous. If it were JUST dm vs player, i don't understand why he'd keep giving them money, magic items, and free resurrections and healing. It kind of sounds like he wanted to run a level 20+ epic tiered campaign but decided to start the players off at level 1 anyway and just bullrush them through all the other levels as fast as he could. If so, that's a horrible way to go about it, because as you saw it makes the players feel helpless and bullied. A campaign like that should just straight up start with the players at level 20 (or higher) and go from there.

He tries to fixx things by saving the party with exmachinas and epic rewards, but these throw the balance outoff the window and while adjusting the DC he creates the next whipe. I am in a simular situation where i gave my players a verry strong start and my balance was out the window. So I get this, because you're a good guy trying to see the best in everyone. That's awesome. THAT SAID, I'm a member from the party and the post was generous to say the least - we spent months giving the benefit of the doubt. DM was constantly lying, hiding rolls, putting us down, and would get audibly frustrated if we managed to have some agency. He's not a new DM and he knows the rules, and has made numerous homebrews that were solid. For monsters, his DCs, ACs, to-hit bonuses and bonus damage ALL frequently surpassed ancient dragons. A child drop-kicked our witcher for 24-bludgeoning damage non-crit (hidden roll). Lvl 2 monsters were hitting in 40ft AoEs for higher average damage than fireball. These are all situations we were willing to try to take on, but it would always end in teleporting-healing-sexier-than-us DMPC saving the day. If I had a nickel for every teleporting-healing-sexier-than-us god I'd have like 2.00, and the situations aren't built to interact with, they're built to watch and make us feel like less-than. If we ever manage to flip the script, more teleporting-healing-sexier-than-us gods. And no, don't try to dispel, counterspell, or detect anything or you'll get a 20+ DC saving throw for massive psychic damage from whatever you're using it on. And no he won't tell you the DC before he makes it up. I've been a DM, and I've made mistakes. He wasn't a child playing his first DnD. He's well past his 30's. He emotionally manipulated people and actively gaslights and lies to us when confronted, and tries to turn people against each other. But again, the post is generous, and fortunately the poster is a god-tier DM. We're having a great time now, and it's shaping up to be one of my favorite campaigns with everyone except the manipulator.

While the D< annoys me as an entitled child. the fact he ended with I don't do confrontations so I don't know what to do tells me this person likes to complain behind others backs but won't say anything when it counts. This is a weak willed person and it seams the other players may be also. There is an old saying of "Evil is allowed to thrive when good people do nothing." this is an excellent example of this. The world is tough people are assholes and you have to stand up for yourself and others. "I don't want to say or do anything cause it might hurt feelings or cause a confrontation and I just can't handle that" is bullshit excuse. I have had to stand up and play the bad guy in such situations before. I'll admit I don't like violence or confrontation either. But the difference is in this guys case is he will just lay back and take it while whining to others. I will stand up and tell the offending party how I feel Tactfully of course at first. I Now if they attack then gloves are off. but I'll stay reasonable and tactful about it till then. After that I'll leave and ask anyone who wishes to go to follow we can find someone better to join us in a game instead. cause I will do this in front of witnesses so that there is no he said she said situation. so in short what ticks me off is this person is whining and unwilling to stand up for themselves or others while having a problem hoping someone else will just take care of it for them. This person is mentally weak.

This GM clearly loves over the top larger than life situations and D&D is not the system for him. Either he needs to be running an epic level campaign where everyone can go ham, or he needs to play a system built around over the top BS. I think that is the bulk of his problem and why he keeps trying to empower the PCs to keep up but being unable to do so. He wants them to fight gods when they should be fighting bandits. That being said, this game sounds agonising and they really do need to leave.

1. this video is made by a third party, uninvolved in this campaign. these types of videos are usually done based off of reddit posts or other forums. in this case, this channel has a subreddit dedicated to submitting stories like this to be read here. 2. uh.. no. the DM here clearly has an issue with power balance. that isn't on the players. and when someone is this off-the-wall crazy about what they're doing, it can be really hard to directly approach them. the player isn't at fault for not knowing how to do that, especially in a society where people met with criticism or rejection can lash out violently. because they're not taught how to do this tactfully from either side. 3. a bad DM is a bad DM. it isn't a player's fault. a bad experience isn't a player's fault, even. imagine leaving a comment like this on one of the stories where people are legitimately sexually assaulted. is that the victim's fault? NO! grow the fuck up. sometimes bad shit happens and it's out of your control -- which means it's not your fault. this player wasn't the one who decided to throw the entire power balance out of whack, the DM did that.

No players owe it to their DM to be their therapist, and no one has to get used to toxic behavior.

@@thatonebab7351 I'm sorry but a bad experience that keeps happening is the players fault especially if they won't deal with it. A bad DM can only continue if he has players. It's like saying that people are forced to play with this idiot and its just not the case. The complaining and crying in this community about stupid shit is outrageous. This game isn't hard, nor is dealing with people. There is a huge community to play through so nobody is stuck anywhere. Again it's a game and standing up for "victims" of a bad DM only propagates the issue instead of dealing with it. It's drama for drama sake. There is no excuse. If this is just a reddit story why the long disclosure about making a video at the beginning? Just to hype up the garbage? If so then I'm out. I'm here for DND stories not gripes and complaints about shitty people. There is enough of that the real world.

It’s the actual items themselves that are the problem. Scrolls of revivify means you are likely going to die. A crap ton of healing potions means the enemies have high DPR. Even to a powergamer this would be sus. I made a mistake myself of this nature. I was dm And had a party that was sent by the king to go make an alliance with the Goblin tribes to the south. I had the king give them a bunch of money so they could buy whatever they wanted before leaving and could keep the rest. They got upset because they thought there would be no rewards. I see why they would think that and learned from it. Never did that again.

Warforged here. DM had a policy session 0 to talk to him in private and not to call him out publicly. We did communicate with the DM and he ended up lying to us and trying to turn us against each other. We're all enjoying a campaign together now and it's awesome.
