OP Here! I never expected my post to actually be made into a video. This is awesome as hell. This story happened months ago and unfortunately this was where our campaign ended. It was a mutual decision between the remaining players and the GM. Dont worry though. If anybody has any questions you can leave a reply and I'd be happy to answer any Ps. I'm not sure how you guys knew what my fighter looked like. He is a black guy with dreads tied behind his head. hay an undead army of dwarves fighting an army of orcs sounded pretty baller im actually planning of making an undead army in a campaign set in a modern fantasy world and based on XCOM, the faction my characters are from are based on WW1 Germans, Death Korps of Krieg and other depictions of German-like factions, the faction could of actually been the BBEG if there was not already some other faction taking over the world (lots of Lawful Evil races in the Krieg Empire and all the officers of the army are necromancers)

I think the wizard is wrong on 2 fronts. 1) If the joke had worn thin, he should've expressed that with his words. Yeah, some people can't take a joke as well as others, and there's nothing wrong with that. But if you're not willing to speak up for yourself, that's on you. 2) You do NOT attack teammates without discussing the course of action OOC first. You just don't.
@storyspren4 жыл бұрын
3) You especially don't MIND CONTROL your teammates. The reason we play this game is to do stuff, whatever that stuff is. Mind controlling another PC is using the game's mechanics to tell another player "you don't get to do your thing, we're doing this my way, and you don't get a say in it"

Nah. See the first time a spell was casted on the fighter and it wasn’t to cool him down from a murder spree or attacking an innocent the wizard was in the wrong. The wizard was then warned if you casted a spell at me again there would be consequences. Yes the group could’ve noticed that the wizard wasn’t laughing and having fun at this point in time. But planning to kill or harm another PC is an offense that’s worse than being laughed at. Also you’re PC doesn’t need to have sex in a fictional world. Gonna have to say, as both a Player and a GM, it's not difficult to just set an aside with the GM and state it flat out. "Look, this is getting into bullshitty territory. Lay off, or I'm out." and mean it. It's also not so hard for the GM to even ret-con the joke part of the Priestess refusing treatment. She may represent a beneficent deity of light and all, but she's also a woman. In a Game-world with sexual mechanics ongoing (however trivial), she's been there and dealt with that before. She'd perhaps scold or lecture the guy, but refusing treatment when and where she's among a very short list of people who can even give treatment is outright CAUSING harm. It's not a tough argument... AND let's be realistic, here. Doctors took an oath to do no harm, and in a world setting with magic and all, so would healers, pretty nearly regardless of their origins or mechanical means. It's not so difficult for a GM to step in and quell the giggle-fest, or pause the game so everyone can calm down, and then state the points of fact, that further picking on one Player is getting out of hand. They've done enough... BUT we heard of none of the original point. That's probably because "That Guy" was acting like an ass the entire Game. It's a relatively simple principle at work here, and it's a standard HUMAN group dynamic. "If you don't want to get treated like shit, don't act like a turd." ;o)

I struggle to imagine a scenario where I can imagine siding with the That Guy. If he'd blown up and said something like "Guys, seriously, stop." That would have been something else. You know, I find myself in that guy's shoes recently. My DM tried to pull a funny with my character when my character thought it would be good to adopt an orphan (long story). The DM had the matron of the orphanage lead me to a room full of kids (without warning me), all of them were confirmed to have ADHD. The kids manage to take my character down in a dog pile but my character managed to get free. I then said aloud, "I'm getting the heck out of there.". Which somehow translated for the DM to "I forgot to close the door." When he tried to explain this to me and I told him my character wouldn't have forgotten to closed the door because he wanted a barrier between him and the kids. He then told me to roll intelligence. With a meager +2, I got a 6 in total. He then said that my character did forget. It should be noted that we have done general intelligence checks before and I'm normally fine doing this but the DM seemed to really want this scenario to happen and for no reason other then to poke fun at my character. In truth, I wouldn't have felt nearly as mad if it weren't for the fact that I lost my most power weapon (a magic dagger that hit like a great sword) by handing it over to a shop keeper. The second it was in the guy's hand, it melts because he was examine another dagger that apparently was supposed to be it's opposite. There were some other factors involved but they are small and I could be here all day listing them. Now, my DM has had us to some really fun encounters and I have enjoyed the year long campaign we have been on and I look forward to what we will be doing next. However, in the relative short time I have been a player I have learned something that all DMs should take to heart (the same goes for players too). Don't poke fun at the players that's demeaning to them and takes away from them having fun in game. With that being said, if this does happen to a player, don't do what "That guy" did in this video by getting mad and try to attack another PC. If it bothers you that much, act like an adult and talk it out with the DM and/or Player(s). Let them know how you are feeling and that you want to have fun with the rest of the party. If it so happens they have grievances of their own with you, hear them out. Don't let friendships/ acquaintanceships get ruined just because you have one or even several bad sessions. If they persists and it's still not fun, then leave and find a different group to play with.
@deadseven34743 жыл бұрын
Eh. A little fun poking is fine, it keeps the games light hearted and adds a bit of perspective. That being said, seems like your DM was more or less targeting you specifically in these instances. You lose weapons like that due to battles, theft, or horrible luck in some other fashion, not because a random store owner has its polar opposite in his breast pocket.

My guy was particularly close with our Dragonborn Paladin and would never have abandoned them. They fled on their own, and we barely managed to come out with our lives, with me being completely out of spells helped carry our unconscious Pally out. After getting out, our ranger managed to knock out our cowardly Sorcerer and took all of his gear. He later escaped and fled. the GM had a talk with him after the game, and he was told by the sorcerer that it was in his bg that he was like that, so the gm let him make another char. that later joined us. In like our 2nd fight with him in the party he spent the entire time trying to steal some booze from some giants instead of helping with the fight. If not for a cleaver plan from our rogue that lured one of the giants into chasing them it would have been a tpk for the rest of us. Everyone was so Pissed. The gm had another talk with them and they said that "our game play wasn't the kind of game they wanted to be in" I guess he just wanted to be completely individual and not help a party. We had a guy invite himself to join our group. We normally played as a group of six but were two shy from PCS (military jargon for transfer) and welcomed the chance to have one of the PCs played by the new guy instead of one of the old group doing double duty. Nope. New guy wasn't interested. In fact, he continually insisted that the way his previous DMs had done things was the right way and the only way. We asked New Guy to roll two characters, JIC one of his was killed quickly. He rolled a straight fighter and a clone of MY PC. He claimed he had played an identical PC but failed to offer ANY proof whatsoever. One other thing: he had recently read as was obsessed with the Videssos Cycle. He could not comprehend how weapons that were devastating when wielded by the Legion were a joke in the hands of just one PC. The DM graciously allowed New Guy his non-standard weapons. Pretty much as everyone predicted, his fighter was killed in the first melee. He gleefully announced that his OTHER PC would turn the clock back, something MY PC could actually do as an ability. He was NOT happy to discover that he wouldn't get that ability until he reached at least 5th level. He also discovered the futility of a newbie begging for help from a superior when his PC hadn't bothered to ask my permission to join the campaign. The discussion took longer than I had the ability to turn back the clock, the fighter was well and truly KIA, and New Guy quit the group in a huff.

A similar thing happened to me in a group of my friends I had been playing with for a few months and it started when my character had misunderstood the situation and one of the players made a joke "why did you do that? This is why you're dad left" which he knew was a touchy subject as my parents are divorced. Suffice it to say I left that group permanently and I haven't spoken to any of them sense

When they said it was a game ending joke I was thinking of people who literally will actually refuse to let a real story play out or someone get something started or break world emersion due to some on running joke. I'm met people you literally just can't RP with because they are like that. And think the height of comedy is to just keep going because eventually the commitment to the bit will make people love it instead of being annoyed.

I don't see an innocent party here, but I do see varying degrees of guilt. I'd say the joke was taken a bit too far, but That Guy's reaction was definitely OTT. He could have just mentioned OOC that he felt it was going too far.

I gave DMed my twin brother and another friend on many occasions and most of the time he flips out because our friend is doing something like stealing his body or killing his fifth character, but he always does stuff back to him, so what I think is that the dude should have just laughed at himself for the joke and simply gotten you back later with another joke, all in good fun

Player vs player is generally a big no at most tables I've ever played with, so That Guy would have been in the wrong from the moment he tried to cast suggestion on another player. Even if the joke went too far, trying to attack your fighter without making it clear he was upset and no longer having fun wasn't the right way to handle it. Fortunately, it sounds like your group had reached a natural ending point anyway.

There was a Campaign where we ended our last session going drunk in a bar and my character wakes up in the next session on the floor of the bar. I decided to be cautious and decided to check my character's person. My DM did a quite bullshit "Shrodinger's Cat" Instance and when I barely SUCCEEDED my investigation check, my character was completely naked. I lost all of my belongings and armor except for my weapons (fortunately and oddly). Not only I hated the fact my character is humiliated this way (I admit I slightly took it personally) but also it slowed down our quest since Key NPCs cannot take a Party with a completely naked man seriously. I mean, sure, after one fight with a beholder I got a Boon that says I get bonus AC the more naked I am (I am a Battle Master Fighter with Two-Weapon Fighting and not a Barbarian, BTW) but that last session almost soured my first D&D experience, even if I was really a good sport. Hurts even more that that Campaign never saw the end because of someone else in my party. My DM even said I would have had the best ending since I can turn into a Neutral naked Angel with Level 25 power. For "That Guy" in this story, if he is playing the Campaign like a game instead of another life, then he is no Player worth keeping.

I once had a character get gender-bent as part of a joke gone too far. What happened was my character was joking around with another character about how we both wanted to be the High Priest of Olidammara, the god of tricks and pranks, because both of our characters were pranksters at heart. However, his character had already been named the High Priest due to him breaking his paladin oath with his previous god and pledging it to Olidammara. So, my wizard jokingly decided that he could be the High Priestess, and used Alter Self to change his appearance from a punky-looking mid-20's male wizard to a 20's female blonde bombshell wizard. And OIidammara decided that was good enough for him and made the change permanent. At first I was kinda miffed, but the dice had rolled that way so I just went with it and spent the last 4-5 sessions of the campaign playing a female who'd been a male all her life. At one point she exclaimed "It's hard to cast these friggin' spells sometimes with these tits in the way!" Later on in another campaign with the same group I was playing a female cleric. We were in this dungeon and came upon this room with a well. We were trying to figure out what to do next and my cleric went "I'll swim down the well and see if there's a passage at the bottom". Do the thing, roll a CON save, fail it and end up drinking some of the water. Roll a d4 to determine the effect, comes up a 4. DM starts laughing hysterically and goes "It's always you!" Female cleric went in, male cleric came out. :| Went back to town after that dungeon and sought out one of the high mages to fix this little problem. The mage wasn't super familiar with the party, and didn't understand what the problem was. She looked at him and went "I want *this* (gesturing to her crotch) gone, and I want *these* (gesturing to her chest) back!" The party had a good laugh at that.

Eventually you start to pull pranks on each other or laugh at the expense of another. You can choose to embrace the joke and keep the laughter going though. Our dwarf grabbed a bugbear named balsag by the codpiece and used shocking grasp. We were roaring with laughter and that blue dwarf flushed purple. The next session he did it again with balsags brother! We were basically playing innuendo bingo and it was the funniest shit. He's the blue baller and we love him for it. At another point they had a picnic and left me alone to kick some skeleton ass. If things go right when we face a white dragon very soon I'll toss our paladin a potion, not tell him what it is, and suddenly he's 12ft tall. I'm hoping to make two of them if I can find enough ingredients. I got enough blood for two at a time at least. Though I'm sure our rogue will be confused as to why I cut my hand open with his dagger.

Well speaking from recent experience when playing with "new people". There needs to be an understanding or communication. As the rule of thumb is to Assume makes an "A** out of you and me" so it you are going to banter or sh*t talk people you will want to build up a rapport with them outside the game. For example I had one person in one of the campaigns I am in joking that my character who is a rouge/monk was going to die. I had asked him to stop on numerous occasions but he continued. Then one session I had snapped and went off on it as people did not realize that it was getting to me though granted I should have said something sooner. (also they are not native English speakers and I am). Apparently I find out he is just sh*t talking but he would not stop when asked and would continue. Best thing to do is if you are going to do things that can be taken wrong is to try to build up a rapport with your fellow players outside the game to get a feel for boundaries as everyone has different tolerances and expectations. While you can not always meet those expectations you can at least respect what you can. no one can please everyone. xD

On the one hand, telling a joke over and over is beating the horse dead. On the other hand, That Guy could've said it was getting to him. Even though he's That Guy, and since I don't personally know him, I think it was a lack of communication that sealed their fate.

I think a situation like that should've quickly been resolved by a apology from the offender. Remember a session should be fun for everyone, dm and players. In a new group it always takes a few session to find the right chemistry. However from your story he seemed like a besserwisser (someone that always claims to know better for the sake of acting superiour)

One contributing issue is that That Guy's glory stealing behavior was not called out right away by other players. They have as much right to express their boundaries as does That Guy. But even more, it's a standard of, well, parenting, that you let a child know right away when they've done something wrong. If one waits til long after -- after the child has forgotten, or, lacking any information to the contrary, believes what they did was ok -- then the child will feel unfairly reprimanded. Adults are not so different... The DM might try to work in a quiet warning...or, after each session, hold an after-action review -- what worked? what needs fixing? what caused problems? A caution though -- doing an after-action review is likewise something that needs to be started with the first session, else, as with delayed reprimand, it will seem like unfair targeting. It won't work unless there is buy-in from the players. Maybe pitch it as, how can we make this more fun for next time? Note the after-action review idea is borrowed from many other fields (e.g. agile software development, kaizen) so one does not need to invent it from scratch. Note also that glory stealing is absolutely endemic in business and (in particular) the tech industry. It's a major cause of team dysfunction and unhappy workers. If players are having this done to them in real life, they'll be all that much more sensitive to it during a game. After all, part of why they're playing is likely to get away from the frustrations at work...

So I started playing DND about 2-3 months ago. I started playing with friends of mine online and we're slowly getting into doing better rp. We all joke around for good fun. We haven't gotten to the point where anyone has gotten offended in anyway so I can't say from experience on that end but I personally believe "That Guy" was in the wrong. The reason for that is because he could have said something about how it's offensive or it feels like he's being picked on. He did according to the story. So while I don't blame him for leaving, he could have said something to the group or asked them to stop.
@edgyhamster7494 жыл бұрын
I think everyone is to blame, he could've spoken up but he was a sorta bum throughout the campaign but everyone else could've stepped in at any time to get back on track but hey you were having fun, that's the game isn't it? Its quite sad to see a group break up in any way. Maybe someone else could reach out to him like the sick DM (seriously dude, kudos to you!!) can reach out and let him know there will be another game at {said time} and if he would like he is welcome to play! But if he doesn't try to keep the door open and just have his character fade out until he feels like playing!

100,000% Gnome Wizard is wrong. If everyone else is new, then he needed to have patience. If he is experienced, he shouldn't get so upset. Anyone who was handling things in such a manner for as long as he was clearly has issues. Tell DM to make gnome wizard bbeg, he storms off to join surviving orc raiders, recruits and builds army of the vestiges of who the party defeats, then cries and complains in final monologue. Keep the character annoying, and have fun thwarting him :D

This story explains how lawful good can easily fall to lawful Evil easily without knowing it. You thought you were doing good by keeping the joke going but not realizing you harmed people in the end. It doesn’t matter if it was intended that way or not as that is what happened; talk to the guy. That’s the only thing that can help now.

I mean, the guy may have been annoying and a bit of a dick, but the the gm gave him an embarrassing ill/infection, then the other characters and dm went out of their way to make sure that the character couldn't get it cured. I'd say the character was within their right to attack the fighter for that and then add into the fact that every player was laughing AT him rather than with him, I personally think the players are more at fault. If a player is not working for you, either communicate that or if that doesn't work kick him from the game. If you're targeting a joke at someone, and every one is laughing at them not with them, it can kinda seem like bullying.

I would say its a fault of both of them. That guy is a bit of a dick but we don't really know if that is warped at all in perspective. I would say following a character just to make fun of them when they are just getting something resolved is also a dick move. Probably for the best of the party that they split away form that player if that is the attitude they want to take and he dislikes it. Some parties like to laugh at some peoples misfortune and others dont. Its really just about the group dynamics.

i think the problem is a clear lack of comunication. Instead of talking their grievances they left it to manifes into game. 1) consciously or subconsciously the party was taking their annoyances with the player on the PC, the feeling of karma might've been part of why this was so funny to them. 2) instead of voincing his displeasure, the mage took things into the game by trying to atack another PC. 3) Jokes at the expense of others require trust an awareness of the targets reaction. I say this as someone who is the but of jokes in his DnD group, i overeact to annoyances because my group finds my reaction funny and i have fun with it. But if i go death silent and offer no reaction at all, my group knows that im not having fun and we just move past it. 4) sadly Dms are discount babysitter and maintaining the stability of the group is part of the role. He should've stoped "That guy" antics in a more direct way and should've noticed that one of his players wasnt having fun. Regardless of how annoying "that guy" was and how bad it handled the situation, i belive everyone has a little of fault in this case.
@mark_sturzbecher4 жыл бұрын
An experience DM could have prevented this. Since your DM was new, this is now part of his experience; and he'll be better off having gone through it. As for the OP. I think he was a vengeful prick. He excessively taunted and teased another player. He's also trying to come across as the 'reasonable one' saying things like: 'that other player was a That-Guy', 'I was surprised at his reaction' and 'was I in the wrong?' He's feigning innocence and hoping for pity points.

I agree your viewpoint, the joke did go on for too long, That guy was a glory hog, but because no one wants to be the victim That guy problebly was bad, but not as bad as the OP described. I honestly think that this is a no-win senerio because everyone is a asshat.
@mark_sturzbecher4 жыл бұрын
@@MrJonjon636 , a lot of people describe others as 'that guy' when they don't click with them or get rubbed the wrong way by them. GM gained experience and hopefully learned from this. Players need to grow up and treat this as a collaborative game. First rule is for everybody to have fun at the table. Which means players should be making it fun for others, not just themselves. That's not the GM responsibility (we know how much they have to bring to the table already as is). You are right though, this is a no-win scenario, since the players didn't have the right mind set to begin with.
