Everyone else here already pointed out most things, but I'd like to add I often times find that a PC being a carbon copy of an existing character is a red flag. Similar appearance or power set, sure that's fine. But similar name and backstory? I find it leads to strange roleplay that doesn't mesh well with living and dynamic original PC's. So 'Gandalf' is a bit of an 'oh no' to me.

It depends... Some characters you can use without any changes like Jason Vorhess and Micheal Myers. Personally my group has seen both sides of this, me and my best friend each have a character who we just kinda borrowed from previous fiction He made Doomguy, who... didn't speak, cuz Doomguy, and immediately killed one of the DM's NPCs just Cuz she was an undead, and was impossible for me to role play with. Even an argument about the NPC death couldn't work because Doomguy doesn't talk. Luckily he realized I wasn't having fun not being able to interact in any way with my party member and Doomguy got dropped immediately Then my character is Morgan from Fire Emblem Awakening, and she hit it off with the group right away, partially because I am really into FE, and I've been using some of my fanfics as basis for Morgan's backstory rather than "she has no memory, just like in the game" and we've got a great subplot going on with Morgan having a huge crush on our Orc Barbarian, Brook I only made Morgan because we made a homebrew Patron for the Fell Dragon, Grima, and my previous character got put on hold because of OoC reasons(my phone which had her character sheet got drowned) but everyone agrees she's the main reason that they haven't swapped characters(the other players tend to swap characters every two or three sessions because they wanna try out different gimmicks and builds) I think the balance is knowing what to take from existing fiction and what to build from scratch, cuz several of Morgan's characteristics are things never even touched in FE:A

When I was getting a friend into D&D, he named his High Elf Wizard, Merlin, cause he assumed that his character had to be some super old guy. I explained to him about how long Elves live and that his 118-year-old Wizard would bearly look like a 20-year-old Human. After that, he decided instead to change the name of the character to Nilrem. @imaginarykangaroo13254 жыл бұрын
@Buddha UwU In 3rd edition or earlier, Paladin must be lawful good and act righteously, they sound like holy knight to me cause not all normal knight are good, some are evil pricks. In 4th edition, they are champion of a deity and their alignment must be similar to the deity, not really holy since there are evil deity but they are still divine knight. Only in 5e, they are loyal to their own oath. So, what you have said so far only true to 5th edition, not the older ones. May be you like it that way and that is your interpretation and reflavour. My interpretation based on what the book and stuffs I have seen.
@imaginarykangaroo13254 жыл бұрын
@Buddha UwU As I said, you like to believe your reason and stand by it, that's you. What I said is that in previous editions, Paladin are consider holy knight. That's what happened. You can disregard 4th edition, you can say a lawful good, righteous knight is not a holy knight, that's just you. Still doesn't change the fact paladin was considered holy knight before 5th edition. So your reasoning not wrong, but it's not right either because it is not related to the matter I was talking about which is: Paladin was holy knight before. That's it.
@SonofSethoitae4 жыл бұрын
@Buddha UwU Paladins were in fact holy warriors back in 2nd edition, not just "knights who say thou a lot". For god's sake, in 2nd, if a paladin ever committed a chaotic or evil act they had to be absolved by a priest. They had to tithe to their charitable religious institution they followed, in addition to donating excess wealth to good caused (or a church, said the phb). They used to cast from the priest spell list too. This is all the from the ADnD 2e PHB (Although most of it was off the shelf from ADnD 1e, it was just a subclass of fighter back then). They were holy warriors at one point, it's very recent that they have become merely oathbound warriors.
@SonofSethoitae4 жыл бұрын
@Buddha UwU You also specifically mentioned 2nd and 3rd editions, and referred to the second edition paladin as a "knight who says thou a lot." You also said they "never were" according to "D&D lore". I was merely pointing out that neither was the case as someone who's played 2nd.

(TL;DR at bottom.) I had something a little like this myself. Wanted to join a group on LFG, found a D&D group that sounded half-way decent. It was one of those "pay-to-play" groups and I was considering it, right up until I heard the dude go on about how "This is going to be just like Critical Role. We're eventually going to be taking this viral on KZbin and Twitch and have our own merch, so you gotta be good with voices. We need you to make three characters up and voices that go with them." Even that I could've let slide, maybe they actually weren't incompetent though I was doubtful at that point. Then I found out he named the four "kingdoms" in his "world" after the four cardinal directions so as not to "confuse the players." How 'bout no? This dolt actually believed he was going to recreate the success of CR? No, it would never be that big with them still going strong, but it could do half-way decent if the story and characters and players were good. Then he tipped his hand with the info about his world, and how he basically thought his players were too incompetent to remember something simple like actual town/kingdom names. He had told me in no uncertain terms "When writing your backstory, keep it short. We want all the backstory to come out in role play so write three to five sentences. Besides, I don't have time to sit through the entire backstories of three characters." And just like that I saw my way out, I simply waited for about two hours and told him "Alright, got the first one done. Backstory's about five paragraphs." Darn shame, but he goes "You're not what we're looking for." I couldn't imagine sitting in on a session with someone who actually thinks his players are idiots, and regardless of what he might say that is definitely the case. Your actions, plans and set-up tell your players what you really think of them. If you don't plan anything then you're not serious about the campaign and don't care about it or your players. Part of the reason CR is so successful is all the time Matt Mercer puts into writing out the potential story lines they could go down, not to mention making those beautiful dioramas that the players fight on. You can't improv an entire story line and have it be as successful as CR, you have to put in some effort and thought as to what you and your players will be doing. TL;DR Wanted to join a campaign, but the DM was delusional and thought his players were idiots so I ran away.

I was DMing with a regular group of friends. One friend had their PC die, so he made a new one: an edgy monk (can't remember subclass though). His whole schtick was death themes. So the party encounters this monk on a roadside. Monk introduces himself, they get to talking. They start talking about food and the monk says "I only eat things I kill myself." Party was a bit flummoxed by the sheer edginess. So they...just left. Just walked away. The player could have been just like "I join the party" and no one would have batted an eye, but instead the party pretty just wordlessly rejected the monk. Honestly the whole scenario was hilarious. We all laughed about it. I kept planning on bringing the monk back as a recurring joke NPC, but always chickened out thinking it would hurt the player's feelings (it wouldn't, he takes jokes quite well). Honestly my favourite stupid moment of D&D I've had.

I just read the title and it already upsets me. Edit after watching the vid: the quote "you're a PALADIN not a HOLY KNIGHT" almost made me laugh, tell me what is the difference between them if the player plays any good alignment? Disappointment n°1: this DM and those 2 players don't even know how to play d&d, the game consists of creating an intriguing story with a bunch of friends/people, which will choose the class and race they want, if some homebrewed races are approved by the DM that's even better!. Disappointment n°2: not roleplaying and not having some fantasy for some derailing is a bad thing for a DM. I don't mean that everyone has to be Matt Mercer, but please at least have some creativity.

There is nothing in new editions stating that paladins have to be lawful good, and class/alignment restrictions aren’t fun for anyone.

That DM sounded very much like he wasn't quite ready to be a DM, and the other players clearly were good buddies of his that were on board with his methodology. The DM was giving off some pretty heavy Railroad DM vibes to me, especially the line about telling the player about when they will tell them when they can roleplay. Dude, seriously? Every time in a game is good to roleplay, some of the best moments in a game come from something that is basically unscripted or unplanned. If you want to tell a story with little to no input from other people write a book. RPGs, especially tabletop RPGs are intended to be a collaberative effort, which means everyone is writing the story, the DM just sets up everything and the players choose how to respond.

Reminds me of the last game I played, I was as patient as I could be with my friend's first time as a GM, his game was scripted and he couldn't improvise to simply let my character take an item to a place for safe keeping, because he 'didn't know' and 'would have to think about it'... Despite my suggestions of how a table-top game is supposed to be done, he was determined to script his game so he could tell his story, to the point the GM took control of his brother's character to take a powerful belonging from my character, for 'story reasons'. I complained and he told me I would get it back and that his game is one where I need to just go along for the ride...
