A big thanks to All Things DnD for creating this video. This was easily one of the most epic moments I've had playing Honest Con, (with maybe the slight exception of successfully seducing Tiamat or driving demonic version of Thomas the Tank Engine through a bank,) and, while I did hope the original Reddit post would do well, I never thought I'd do this well. Still, I think the real hero of that game was the DM for putting up with what I pulled, not to say he wasn't to it. Another one might have retconned things or just said "no", but I'm glad he didn't. Hopefully I'll have many more epic stories about Honest in the future. :)

@@mrdoge9508 It was a Hellfire Engine made to look like Thomas the Tank Engine, complete with a heavy distorted theme tune the DM blasted out his laptop whenever Thomas turned up. First time we met him in Avernus (while Honest had lost his Warlock powers and so was just a commoner at the time,) and blew him up. Second time was while trying to steal a set of artifacts called The Manuels of Awesome Volumes I, II and III. We got caught and, after unsuccessfully trying to stuff the Bag of Holding containing the tomes up his own ass, Honest decided the best thing he could do was run to the forge where the Dwarves had just finished repairing Thomas, jump in and drive it through the wall.

Homebrew items in large quantities always backfire. You give a player as much as a stick, it's only a matter of time until they sharpens that thing and start poking holes in other creatures. Never underestimate their capacity to weaponize everything... and just roll with it, because it's usually really fun for everyone that way :)

I really love how the DM handled the multiple wild magics going off all at once. That I feel really is something that just can’t in any way be resolved through the established framework; winging it really is the only proper way to deal with it, and in this case it was done really well.

Edit: I'm of course not denying you - if you are good enough at improvisation, that's great! As a DM I'm pro-players almost every time (I play the god that controlls the world so my players can have fun with their characters) but I don't thing "banning" certain things, like Funky Fungus in this case is bad. Such random item (can be totally useless, or totally op) would be too much for me to handle properly in edge cases so I'd simply explain that to players and ask them to avoid using it. No point in destroying a session or possibly even campaign just because I wasn't able to hold it together.
@NuclearFallout1
@NuclearFallout1 3 жыл бұрын
@@NaoyaYami But if it really goes south badly that it would end the game could you not just come up with some narrative bs so that it doesnt i mean is that not what being a good DM is all about figuring out ways that your players can continue the game regardless of how badly they fuck it up this is an honest question btw as im interested in being a DM at some point.
@NaoyaYami
@NaoyaYami 3 жыл бұрын
@@NuclearFallout1 Like I said, for me personally it could prove too much to handle. My improvisation skills may not be enough. I'd rather just ask my players not to force me to deal with such stuff just like I'm not forcing them to defeat a demigod while Party is at lvl 1 or forcing them to attend a high-class party full of most influential nobles and even royalty, while Party is made of characters like rough warrior, crude barbarian or sociopathic warlock - a party with social score of zero at best or negative at worst. We're all here to have fun, we can all agree on some rules, but feel free to ask me if some _illegal_ stuff is okay on per-case basis.

Notes from a NG Human idiot; Greetings from lovely Restenford(Pelor save me from this allergy, otherwise we're ok here....)! While i personally think there's no TRUE "Winning/lossing" in our fantastic hobby, you can still turn a terrible situation to your advantage. We tell a children's Story 'round Restenford about an Emperor who walked 'round the Kingdom naked after being lied to by a pair of Thieves. For some reason, this tale reminds me of a line from it: "....the emperor's naked!" a peasant shouted from the crowd. The Parade stopped. The Emperor paused. A hush had fallen over the crowd. The quick thinking Baker suddenly shouted back, " No he ain't! The Emperor's merely choosing a Clothing Optional lifestyle." May your pantheon ever favor you(especially in these trying times), Baron Trevelyan of Restenford

funny short story: I ran a homebrew 5e adventure. along the way, i wrote in that some bandits ambush the PCs and take half their loot (only half, because they had bigger plans.) one of the bandits was a master crossbower. the PCs refused to give the bandits their money, so I rolled hit to fire off a warning shot. Nat 1. I, the DM, broke the campaign before it really started. ironic, because there was a PC who had the title "the campaign breaker." needless to say, we all had a good laugh about that.

I remember playing my homebrew noble genie patron blood hunter because i wanted to play a character that was a body guard for out party members noble genie warlock. Made an agreement with my DM that i wanted to be the reincarnation of a high level demon that the warlock controlled and surprisingly he allowed it on a few conditions, i start with 3 very powerful magic items (a mask, cloak, and katana) that the demon originally used but could never take them off so i couldnt use any other magic items, and if the warlock died, my character would either kill himself, or lose his powers and have the genie hunt him down. Sadly the game ended before i was able to play the character through but i was able to do some ridiculous damage with him one shotting a powerful enemy in the boss room then using fallen puppet blood curse to make it attack the boss, and due to vulnerability, immediately halved the bosses hp turning what shouldve been a deadly encounter into a slaughter fest for the party.

I have a player that plays against me as the DM and doesn't play their character or the situation. It's "What is the DM going to do for X." instead of considering what their character would do or how their character would react to a situation. It's pretty annoying and the rest of my players get annoyed with him as well. His playstyle made me change my DMing vocabulary. I used to call on players and ask them what they would like to do and then at the end of their turn I would say "Anything else?" Sometimes a player would like to say something in character or w/e, not a big deal. This dude went on for 45 minutes in session 1, just thing after thing after thing. Never in my 25 years of DMing have I experienced this and it's frustrating. Not going to kick him, I am going to get to finish the campaign, then just not invite him to the next one. Of course, I have tried talking with him, but it's just his personality. Not every player is meant for every table.

Yeah guys, remember, your DM loves you and doesn't play against you either. How is love spelled you ask? Well, it's either: *A-N-C-I-E-N-T W-H-I-T-E D-R-A-G-O-N V-S L-E-V-E-L 1-1 P-A-R-T-Y* or the much shorter version *T-P-K* Irony aside, if your DM chooses to be a dick, ignore this guy's comment and wreck shit up.

I think it depends on how it is between the group, some friends like to tease each other and "break each other spirit", if it was done in all good fun, and as long asall of the players are all taking it in a light hearted tone, then i think its completely fine. but when people are going out of there way to hurt other people and make them feel upset/bad, then thats when its unhealthy and unacceptable

Bella's my character, and she is a forest gnome - not a halfling, for some reason OP keeps thinking she's a halfling😓 She was also totally up for killing the dragon from the start but was outvoted (we had a choice between kill the dragon or go through the challenging islands, each to do with backstory and inner demons), and as a result her uncle was killed. Nobody in the party has told her, she was unconscious when it happened, and honestly I think at this point they may be scared to tell her because she will be so upset and mad😂

So we’re all wondering why are we fighting this enemy if we’re gonna lose. Other players were getting charmed and being ‘controlled’. My turn came around and I bamboozled the DM. I've never 'won' a dnd game. Im a new player. But my favorite story from my playing DND is from my first campaign, which is currently on pause until further notice, unfortunately. I'm playing a homebrewed bunny girl druid, shes 4'8, and is pretty weak, though she has good health, and good spells from her playtest unearthed arcana druids circle. The rest of the party is a dumb but loveable goliath paladin, sassy as hell childish human wizard, and a wood elf rouge- who is myserious and protective of the little bunny- because she's small. As we started the campeign, our job was to break a large stone, the goliath goes first, and tries to destroy the boulder, he rolls low, and failed. The wizard goes next, casting fireball, and rolling a 10 cracked it a bit. Knowing my little bunny wouldnt be able to break it ib strength; she sits beside the rock and said "hello, we need you to break so we can save the children over there. Please break. Id hate for those poor kids to get hurt, we deeply need to save this town of poor innocent people." Natrual. 20. The rock breaks of its own accord, it was at this moment the party decided that the little bunny was the group leader; and we started our journey to save the town.

Sigh i can understand this heavily. I homebrewed a magical soul stealing lantern that stole the souls of things you killed for 5e in a curse of strahd game given to the party by madam Eva ( Who in this we played up more of the gypsy role of wanting to con people with her ) and now the party Warlock convinced the party to side with strahd and help him free himself and the land of barovia from the clutches of the dark powers by killing everyone sucking them into the lantern leaving then over time resurecting them since they have there soul traped. I rolled a moral check for strahd after this and several others and this resulted in strahd actualy having hope and he over the course of a few sessions ended up giving up on Irena knowing now that she is not his true love Tatyana but a shadow of her warped by the dark powers and the curse of reincarnation. He now hopes to someday find Tatyana again in a next life. Do to that the dark powers lifted strahd from being lord of the realm and the curse of vampirism since he finally saw the error of his ways. Now the party seeks to free everyone they can and end the endless cycle in Barovia and stop the soulless creatures from being born by getting everyone out through the lamp and a shit tone of deals with the raven queen ( long story part of a chars backstory ) and also potentially some deals with Amadeus to help restore the land back to were it once was. ( they found a spellbook that contained a ritual to contact him from one of the chars fathers who was a high tierd warlock/wizard tiefling native. ) All because i gave them that lamp and i incorporate there backstory into the game as best i could.

If we are talking about winning dnd then I have one. Starfinder not dnd but anyway, the crew is my android soldier named ja'car, kathatha mystic named jalal, a yasoki operative called shadow thief (or shadow for short). We get called in to help negotiate between 2 space dragon factions who were arguing over resources. DM's plan was to have us pick one side to fight for and eliminate the other. Unfortunately for him, that was not how this group decided to handle it. We start talking with both sides. It's not going well. Then Shadow speaks up. "Why not have some kind of sport competition to decide who has primary control. And you can have another competition every hundred years so that the loser still has a chance to regain control." Everyone is frozen. Jalal is the first to recover and adds "AND WE CAN MONATIZE IT!" Everyone is stunned again. AND THAT IS HOW THE SPACE DRAGON OLYMPICS WAS BORN!

well i had this lvl 1 rogue and i single handed killed all of the enemy that Dm throwed at the group... first there were 15 orc that manage to take down two of my group of four... third group member ran away haha but me and my crossbow manage to take them all out without taking a hit as i took first round putting my armor on while group rush the enemy (Dm was like... wait did you take off your armor before you went to sleep? and i said yes haha) , next were few spiders in cave that my sneak skill and night vision got rid of but then there were three final bosses that were giants and while i got group to sneak into one tunnel while i hid in other and i shoot bolt into other side of cave area that had a shield for me to hit to get giants to be busy and then group made a noise to one giant ran after them while i throw oil flask at other and it fell down and then i set it on fire by latern that was hanging on wall while giant was trying to get up , second giant i took down was stupid to run at me while i threw ball bearings in front of it and jump out of my tunnel and it had a cliff behind me so down the giant went , giant that ran after the group had manage to almost wipe them out then i shoot bolt into back it head and it came running at me so i hit it with oil flask and it never got up while i took turns on its health , we went into cave to find a missing girl and her kidnaper that was her lover and her father put up a reward and while kidnaper/lover was trying to let my group let them go for lot of of diamonds (80 gp) i knocked guy out with a club and start tie him and her up while my party asked me to let them go and say sorry to girl and her lover... well i did after party gave me all the diamonds and party went back to town while i went after the couple as it was end of season so i gave the dm a note about me dragged them both in for 20gp reward after few secret rolls and paper trade with dm :D so story point is how i kill all the enemies and got 100 gp in one season with lvl 1 rogue , well i wasnt allowed into that group again as group found out i catch the lovers :P

And THIS is why you avoid homebrew unless your entire game system is homebrew - Rule 238: Someone is ALWAYS going to find out how to use a really crappy and suicidal item. The only solace that DM got was that the idiot who ruined his TPK is now a hideous abomination. XD "And we also leveled up once." What? Only ONCE? If D&D were a JRPG, you'd gain ten levels! ;D

I mean, in one's eye is not evil until it doesn't go with your view or moral. And to everyone else... yes you're the baddies. I don't remember where and if I heard this but. Its goes like this "Is it just one? When has it been just one? One war? One town? One country? Can you tell me that you will just eat one spoonful? One chip? Or cookie? No we become greedy monsters once we have power. It will never be just one." If it not from a movie I take full credit for this wisdom. If it is credit to the original! 🤣🤣

Yeah, that's my reaction to this as well. Some of the stuff, like seducing Tiamat, was just dumb. The resolution of the mushrooms was frankly boring if they're supposed to be a bunch of wild surges. About the only truly interesting part was the personality of the lich and his wife trying to stave off the march of time on their relationship.
@craigtucker1290
@craigtucker1290 4 жыл бұрын
@@Cryosite I almost agree, but the lich and significant other come across as DM showboating their former characters. Not surprisingly considering how off the rails this campaign was and tends to be a trait of that type of DM. I would agree on the ridiculousness of many of the supposed accomplishments and feats as they are beyond improbable, wearing down a god until they accept you as a priest? Really? But this is that kind of game that is more about what the DM was allowing the players to do then actually accomplishing a legitimate feat, so in that sense it is OK. Afterall, it's not like the OP is claiming an epic accomplishment so much as retelling a ridiculously amusing campaign. I just don't get how the player derailed the fight when the DM was in control of the wild surges from the mushrooms. Perhaps the DM defeated themselves?
@Cryosite
@Cryosite 4 жыл бұрын
@@craigtucker1290 you're right. In fact, now that you remind me of that detail, I recall cringing at that too. I think the general, non-stop facepalm let some bits escape recollection, pushed out by new bits. I blame trying to find something nice to say. After sleeping on it, even if they weren't "the DM and his girlfriend" inserts, the scenario presented is sort of dumb. "We're immortal by our own actions. But our love will fade over time. So we're going to pause, presumably forever, thus not be actively living and enjoying our love." It doesn't really solve the problem presented.
@craigtucker1290
@craigtucker1290 4 жыл бұрын
@@Cryosite That is why I took the story just as an off the rails ridiculous campaign as it makes it less cringe worthy when listening to it. Kind of like a Monty Python D&D skit. I do wonder if the lich and significant other were immortal from the campaign they played in or did the DM power bump these characters along with their possessions. In other words, is this DM just perpetuating ridiculousness from some other campaign and DM to their own campaign. Afterall, that is a fairly common trope with certain DMs as they want their players to know how cool and powerful their characters are or were while being able to show them off in such a way to inspire fear and/or awe. Nothing wrong with that as they had fun, but it does come off as cringe, ridiculous, and just not to be taken as something serious.
@Cryosite
@Cryosite 4 жыл бұрын
@@craigtucker1290 I think you nailed it in the head. If this is taken as just some fun silliness, it's fine. The issue is when you frame it the way OP did. As "winning" and as the DM "breaking." Imagine if you took the story of Oogy or Onyxia and framed them as the player "winning" against the DM? That would be a huge reduction in how those heartwarming tales were presented.

Five. Wasn't even a combat encounter. The party was exploring Undermountain at a ridiculously low level, but the DM would dial down the difficulty on most encounters because the party consisted of my brother and I, and the DM was our dad, and this was all back when we were just kids. So we find this room that's suspiciously devoid of anything dangerous, so of course we poked around to see if there was anything interesting or any secrets to be found. There was this candle that seemed magical, or perhaps it was the candle holder, but either way there was only one candle for a holder designed for two, big thick column candles that were pretty distinctive. Now of course the real trick to this was that the other candle was a few floors down, and you were supposed to simply remember this room when you found it hours or days or weeks later when you finally ran into it. Even pulling back to recover often, our group wasn't making much progress. Undermountain is a HUGE labyrinth after all, and each floor is easily enough for a dozen sessions. At least it was for a pair of easily distracted kids running two low-level characters each. However, my brother got a random idea. What if we just cut the existing candle in half, very *very* carefully, and put the top half on the empty spot for the second candle? And just like that, we were suddenly staring into a hidden treasure vault laden with probably a literal ton of gold coins and loads of gems, including an emerald as big as our human fighter's head. In those days, using Advanced 2nd edition rules, finding loot got you 1xp per gold in value, sooo ... Yeah, shortly thereafter we were not only invited to join the Lords of Waterdeep, but were in the process of buying our own kingdom.
