What I always find so interesting is how so many people always say that the French are so snooty if you can’t speak their language. They really should be grateful that people care to learn their language to be honest. Americans never do that (maybe unless you’re from New York 😂) even to people who speak the most broken English. I always find myself trying to help a new English speaker especially when they tell me. The French really need to get it together. Not flattering or motivating at all.

Interesting stuff, Alicia! You can't be bad at pronunciation: you're a musician, you're a pianist, a singer. You've done tons of ear training. You know how to listen. Then it's just practice. Also, make it fun! Try finding songs/artists in the genres you like the most and imitate the pronunciation. Play them on the piano, try karaoke!

I read that book years ago when it was new or newish. I've studied languages on and off as a hobby for a long time. I always like hearing about anyone's language learning journey and the book was really well written. It's easy to get caught up in the momentum of the book I think but I tried his app and the pictures only approach doesn't always work. I used the app when it was new and they did not let you put English on the card at all. Not even for when you forgot what the picture was because you hadn't seen the flash card is a while. I sent feedback and asked what to do in that situation and at that time they told me the method was no English, pictures only. I quit. I'm curious to see how the app developed over the years and that's how I found your video.

I discovered this "side" channel of yours and immediately watched this video, because I'm also a language learner (from Argentina, I'm 46 and started to learn German one year ago). There is a big language community with tons of videos on YT of people using different techniques (i.e. Stephen Krashen theories, spaced repetitions, ...), you might already know them since they are popular but my favorites are: Steve Kaufmann (your fellow canadian), Lindie Botes, Easy German (there's Easy French too), Robin MacPherson, and many more. Like with music and piano, I'm not able to keep studying the whole time because of personal or external circumstances and I study for some months, then I stop and some time ahead in the future (maybe months or years) I restart studying. It's not the best because I feel a beginner forever on many different things (the curse of being curious and unable to focus on only one thing), but it's better than giving up. I will look for the book you mention, sounds interesting. Hope you're doing good learning french! And thank you for all the things you share online!

I think you're being a bit harsh on yourself, I'm french and I think your pomme and bonjour were pretty damn good. Your rat sounded more spanish to me though, the "r"s are more like between that and the english "r"s. Anyway, I believe most people would understand. Personally I find it flattering if someone is interested enough in our culture to learn the language and in no way disrespectful, no matter how bad their pronunciation. Sometimes it takes a little bit of time to adjust to somebody's accent but anybody who actually committed to learn a language would appreciate the effort you make. And switching to english might just be an attempt to help if someone is struggling. Now, there are also people who lack patience, but what you gonna do?! please don't let them stop you! I remember somebody saying that one thing that gets in the way of learning the piano as an adult is the fear of making mistakes. Oh! Right! That was you! 😉

Hey thanks for the feedback! And for the reminder about not being afraid to make mistakes...sometimes it's the hardest thing of all to practice what you preach. 🤣
