"That's what Tesla said, but nobody verified it" - They ran tests extensively at the Run on Less event, where Pepsi entered 3 of their Tesla Semi's. You'd need to look at the figures yourself, I can't remember it all off the top of my head. I can say in 48 hours one Semi covered 1600 miles. In 24, it covered 1,076. However, it should be noted Tesla has Mega chargers for the Semi, 750kw, so I imagine rollout of the Semi will depend on the charging infrastructure.

I would think PepsiCo will likely have several of those mega chargers installed at their distribution hubs and since they are day cabs, they probably won’t have to charge much at other locations. Which also means lower cost per KwH.

I just looked it up and Tesla is competing against other electric trucks it seems. Tesla has better batteries than those trucks so I’d expect them to be better. They also didn’t disclose the payload only that the truck was “nearly maxed out at 80k lbs. That doesn’t tell us anything. The goal of electric trucks to to compete with and eventually replace diesel trucks. Currently and in the near future (5-10) that isn’t happening. Edit: it’s been 6-8 years and Tesla STILL hasn’t told us anything of value. Almost all the info about the truck is the same it’s been years ago.

I live not too far from the Pepsi plant in my area. And the trucks come into my work from time to time. Talking to one of the drivers about it, they do say it is plenty powerful. Especially going uphill. And like the video said it takes a minute to get used to the center seat position. Especially when backing up and not being able to turn your head and look back down the driver side because of the center seat position. Learning curve I suppose. But overall they say they do like driving it and it does the job well.

EVs at least take a way some of it. It's a step in the right direction for the environment but it needs people to invest to be a solution. Not investing because you don't want diesel trucks to die for some reason is stupid

I sat in one of these at Frito Lays. Being in the center of the truck creates TWO blind side backs compared to just having the passenger side being a blind side bsck while the driver side is the sight side. This is why you see semi trucks mostly backing from a driver side jack knife or angle back. So unless the driver has a football field to pull forward and lineup for a straight back, this concept of sitting in the middle will never replace the conventional seating when it comes to backing in tight shipping and receiving yards or truck stops.

This is one of my biggest concerns. That camera isnt giving you the perception needed for backing into tight spots. Imagine trying to back into a packed truckstop after a 14 hours day and you have a long nosed hood, that you have to edge around

Here in Europe there are already some semi ev's from Mercedes, M.A.N. and Volvo on the streets and Mercedes plans charging up to 1 mw. And the best thing: they look like real semi trucks and can be handled like those so you must get your window down to show your delivery note at a company barrier.

I think an EV semi would be great for local day cab use but not for long haul. At present the trucking industry the drivers are already under the gun to make sure loads get delivered on time and having to stop and charge the truck for several hours won't be feasible.

80% of the truck miles are on routes are under 400 miles, so it can replaces most trips. Tesla is already building mega stations and for the most part would only need to cover the highway grid which should be easy to do. For trucking the only thing is cost and EV Semis are SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper to operate lowering TCO - which is the only thing that matters. Once these start rolling off the line (Tesla is building a factory with 50k per year), companies who do NOT go EV Semis (not just Tesla) will not be able to compete and eventually go bankrupt. In 10-15 years 80%+ of Semis will be EV.

I wonder if the rear axle setup is made 100% by Tesla or if it's made by a legacy manufacturer? Do they have an axle lock or a power divider lock? I wonder if the suspension/frame is the same as a traditional big rig (with electric motors on the axles instead of a driveshaft running in from the transmission). If you get another chance to look at this thing, please point it out.

It seems they are still refining the product. That makes sense, as the first real customer has now used them for a long while. I wish all vehicle companies would do that. However, Tesla has also been battery restrained and they have just begun building the factory. In terms of local pollution in cities and areas next to heavy traffic roads a large percentage could be removed if we changed to alternative energy trucks. Many studies indicate that city dwellers may lose up to a year of their lifespan due to mainly diesel engine pollution. Not sure about the veracity and how solid these studies are. It is a difficult issue to measure. But there is no doubt it is a very big problem. If Tesla really can manufacture EV trucks at the informed price range, and they can offer the savings they believe, this will happen for short to medium distance hauls sooner than later as the transport sector is extremely focused on containing costs.

So many problems with this design. One of the unspoken about problems is the fact the windows don’t roll down. I have to go through security checkpoints constantly and not having a window that rolls down would be a huge inconvenience. Backing into docks seems like it might be a problem as well, the other thing is the way you are sitting central in the truck seems to me like it would make it very difficult to see what you’re doing when backing up. In the beginning, they said something about 82,000 pounds as far as I know the current max GVWR is 80,000 pounds.

Electric-drivetrain trucks are given a 2000 lb allowance, so long as the axles and tires are rated for the weight.

They really should have made smaller battery yard trucks to start. That would have made the most sense and then move their way up when battery tech improved to long haul.

This Semi for what is proposed, is totally useless. Tesla would been far better with a smaller truck for the delivery sector, with short routes and lower payloads.

Petition to have Tesla Semi like Ambulance (Mini Tesla Semi, with the back as a spacious and "luxurious" ambulance cradle... high enough and long enough to fit every new piece of ambulance medical device, but on air suspension like the truck seat, to keep the patient and doctors in perfect safety and stability ) ... and this Ambulance would be capable to go Off-Road to remote areas, and be 70% submersible to be able to cross areas that have flooded roads/bridges , being electric, you don't need air for the engine, and you can have oxygen tanks and generators... These will be for experienced crew that can go up to 240 MPH (386 Km/h) while being safe because the battery lowers the gravity center, and because of the automated safety.

And what do you think that would accomplish? Extra weight, more things to breakdown, unsafe load shifts, and a whole lot of jackknifed trucks in the rain. Ever stop and think of reasons why trailers _shouldn't_ be powered, or do you just enjoy rationalizing and assuming your ideas are infallible?

Why are they running duals? Super singles save 200 pounds of rotating mass per axle, while holding the same weight ratings. Also the drive wheels shouldn't be required to have brakes which would shave another 100 lbs of rotating mass. Thats huge, i bet atleast 20 percent more efficient

. Electric brakes are fail-deadly. They won't work if the power shorts out. Air brakes are fail-safe. The emergency brakes are released by supplying air pressure. A catastrophic air _loss_ will apply the brakes automatically. Removing air brakes is begging for another Colorado tragedy.

Andre, I talk completely normal with my co driver. A passenger seat to driver's seat conversation at sixty-five miles an hour, going down the road with a fully loaded trailer. If the truck is engineered and put together half decent, you do not need to yell to talk to your co driver.

They were really overhyping the quietness of the cab compared to a regular diesel truck. Modern trucks have very little engine noise in the cab- certainly not anywhere close to making it difficult to carry on a conversation with passengers.

I drive over the road semi and electric truck would never be feasible to go Coast to coast but Depot did beat Depot would be fine but most companies would have to own two vehicles if they were going to run freight out and run freight back because of the charge time they'd have to own twice as many vehicles to keep the schedule

Twice as many vehicles last twice as long. So no difference over the long run. And there's so much less maintenance downtime, cost and repair. No oil changes, no transmission fluid changes, no exhaust components, little to no brake, rotor and drum changes. Much lower fuel costs. Smooth, quiet and no smoke. No shifting and more relaxing to drive.

No test drive? Tesla must be joking. All other manufacturers welcome journalists covering the tech industry to take a test drive. Still, Tesla has to consider some flexibility in the design with respect to global markets. For example, the design of the cab won't make it in Europe, for example. I am not against Tesla entering the heavy truck business, but different customers have very different requirements. Making a semi-truck following PepsiCo's specifications is irrelevant for most other companies. There are a few keywords to take on board: Modular and flexible design, develop faster, get it out on the market and dare to get criticism from customers, and iterate improvements incrementally. As for now, this seems to be a never-ending story telling the Semi will be produced next year...

It did 1076 miles in 24, and 1600 in 48 at the Run on Less event last year. Seems like 3 days is doable. The only real hold-up for deployment is the charging infrastructure required. They currently install the 750kw chargers at their plants, or Pepsi's/Frito's. As far as I'm aware they have begun to widely deploy them.

I root for KENWORTH......pure battery is not ready for trucking. DIESEL ELECTRIC couple with POWERFULL ELECTRIC MOTOR is the answer. The diesel could be BIO-DIESEL or SYNTHETIC-DIESEL.

In trucking there’s only one thing that matters - the TCO. Tesla is building a factory that would launch next year and will be able to make 50,000 of them per year. Other truck manufacturers also started delivering semis. In 10-15 years any trucking company still using diesel will not be able to compete with companies with EV Semis and will eventually go bankrupt. In trucking it’s all about $$$ - and EV Semis are far superior - not to mention that Pepsi drivers who run the Tesla Semis love them and don’t want to go back to diesel Semis 😂

Well, the problem is you guyz dont know squat about simis. You wouldnt recognise a good truck from a POS. Without lots of miles behind the wheel pulling loaded trailers going thru the motions of backing, loading, pulling mountain grades decending the IKE with a full load and on and on your opinion is uneducated and moot. Find an experienced driver to do this review. Someone who knows what they are talking about. !

@@ranig2848 somehow I don’t think full production will be up and running in 2025 but we’ll see. I used to be a HUGE fan in Tesla. But musks antics are wearing thin. Roadster, Tesla robotaxi, hyperloop, full self driving, and semi. I’ve noticed that he does this to generate hype and boost stock sales a lot. It’s been 7-8 years. If he knew the semi wasn’t ready for production in the initial 2-3 years, don’t reveal the dang thing yet.

The million miles warranty and zero maintenance is tempting. Tesla has exceptional build standards and customer support. It’s available now. FSD Beta has never failed. Tesla will produce 50,000 Semi Trucks tonight. Elon is perfect and God like. Everyone loves Tesla and hates ICE cars.

bullshit!!! there is not such things as zero maintainance and diesel trucks very easily does over million miles, and even less powerful trucks hauls significantly more load than that 1000hp EV, in Australia or Scandinavia volvo fh, scania with just 600hp hauls up to 3-4x that load all the times.
