How did you get that lighter swirl in the purple resin?

I recently used a similar method for making a chessboard. I laminated 4 of the strips then a glue up. After that I cut again and reversed into the chessboard formation and glued again. Once glued I then added the resin. It came out pretty good.

The key to getting any swirl or pattern to stay in the final project is to wait until the epoxy is slightly thicker than honey. Once it's at that consistency you can swirl it or make any other design you want, and it will hold. Just be careful to take it slow so you don't introduce air bubbles into the piece. Wyatt - those marks were left over from the tape and CA glue. If I were to do this over, I would probably attach each block to the mold with some fast-curing epoxy instead of using painters' tape and CA glue.

That sounds beautiful. How would you do the alloy?

@@BenVanKirk I would make them inlays. Probably aluminum so they could be molded. Maybe use a little rose-gold paint for “black and plain silver for “white.” I would opt for a very minimal set. Pawns could be small cylinders with a single band inlay, about a 3rd of the piece’s height from the top. For the Rooks, I would likely follow the same structure as a pawn, but make it scaled about 30% larger than a pawn, and give it a metal cap at the top. For the king, a cross inlay on the front, as well as a crown. For the Queen, 3 ringlets around the body and a crown. For the bishops, small cones on the tops of the pieces. For knight, you could make a slight horse-head shape and give the illusion of reigns with some inlays. If you’d like to get in contact with me I can illustrate these ideas.

@@ginesey one trick is to add the color... take a clear disposable plastic cup and "scoop" out a little to see how dark the color is. I think this project took about 1 gallon or epoxy total. Just take rough measurements of the total square inches then use a conversion calculator on google to convert square inches to gallons or liters.
