You vastly underestimate the power of conditioning. For example: you might find it absurdly impossible for a man to deadlift 500kg but Eddie Hall was the first, but not only, man to do it. And of course, 2020 has messed this up too. The race is currently being run (Since 13 September) in Glanspitz-Park in Salzburg's Lehen district, Austria. According to theier website: The five runners who will be participating are: Nirbhasa Magee, 41 (IRL), living in Reykjavik, Iceland - 3 finishes, ranked 22nd Ananda-Lahari Zuscin, 45, Kosice Slovakia - 6 finishes, ranked 25th Ushika Muckenhumer, 52, Salzburg, Austria - 1 finish, ranked 30th Andrea Marcato, 38 (ITA), living in Zurich, Switzerland - first-time runner, two times over 1000km in 10 day race Milan Javornicky, 46, Celakocice, CZE - first-time runner, 569 miles in ten-day race GOOD LUCK TO ALL!

3:43 Sir, I think you'll find that the weirdest and most extreme race held on planet Earth, will always be the latest schnapps relay race. It's not like in the Olympics where you run in a circle. You make a start-line and an end-line. The teams line up at the start-line, while officials line up several glasses of schnapps for each team at the end-line. Then the race starts, with a team member from each team running to the end-line, and running in circles around their schnapps 10 times before downing one of them, and then running back to the start-line to tap-in the next team member. You can choose to do more than one shot of schnapps, but you have to do 10 circles around them per shot you want to take. Whichever team survives and finishes enough runs to finish all their schnapps first, wins. Last time I was in one of these, I ended up feeling dizzy running in circles at the end-line, so I sat down, and because I was thirsty, I started drinking more of the schnapps. The next two hours I spent half the time rolling around in a bush, and the other half yelling that I had both male and female genitalia and that I had inherited them. This was filmed. I'm so proud. I think it's easier that you run the same route 5000+ times. The monotony causes you to not pay much attention. If you run through a place for the first time you spend energy to process the information. They run on the same conditions. They don't have to spend energy or fail to adapt and waste time. Okay so correct me if I'm wromg but here we go So if the race is 3100 miles over 52 says You need to run a minimum of 59.6 miles a day. Going to round to 60 for simplicity. And if the track is open from 6 am to midnight (16 hours a day) we can divide 60 by 16 to find that at minimum runners need to be doing 3.75 miles an hour. And with the average walking speed being 3-4 miles an hour could someone not hypothetically walk the entire time? Or perhaps jog/run for 10 days and walk the rest?

But it is actually not (debatable), see: In ideal race all competitors should deliver their maximum over all distance, not just parts or finish. So it is hard to believe that 300k+ runner would be even able to focus on every k of the race. Don't forget about external distracting factors like weather (cold, wind), necessity to eat, drink ... Second. we are talking about toughest challenge. Intuition tells us that must be one where we suffer most. If you ever tried to run as fast as you can (sprint) you probably remember it was mostly about power, not struggling with fatigue. But once you try to run FAST and LONG, you would feel pretty quickly complete exhaustion. It is called anaerobic race and it happens on attempt to run very fast for more than 20 seconds (depends on your fitness). Actually, humans can deliver maximum effort only for 6 seconds. Yes, Sprinter (Bolt/etc) runs _slower_ after his first 70 meters of race - despite any effort. So we have 3 types of fuel and once we ran out of it but trying to continue - we suffer: - Maximum power - 6..20 seconds; - Anaerobic, maximum possible speed for distance ~2 minutes; - Aerobic (glycogen) - around 2 hours. - More than ~5-6 hours - fats. This is very approximate picture but idea must be clear for now: if one is looking for toughest, hardest, mentally challenging race - one must be looking for disciplines on "edge" of human limits: - Hardest anaerobic ordeal: 400m and 800m; - Fast ~aerobic - more than 2400 (1 1/2 mile), like 3000m or 5000m. - Glycogen depletion - marathon-like (but actually NOT marathon - 42km). You might wonder why marathon (classic, 42km) is not toughest race? Yes, for unprepared runner limit is amount of glycogen accumulated - it is around 2 hours (~30-35 k). Once ran out, one needs to switch to fats and that is toughest point. But with proper training one gets used to utilize fats and suddenly marathon is just another long distance, but NOT like (say) attempt to set Personal Best at 5000m.

Hi. Love your work Thoughty2. Just saw this vid and thought I’d give you some background on the Gloucester cheese rolling (which takes place a stones throw from where I live). The rumour of the grandma being knocked out by the cheese is a slight distortion - that was my late gran, and whilst she was knocked out, it wasn’t by the cheese, but by some hulk with some rugby boots on who came tumbling down Cooper’s hill out of control. She was caught unawares as she was trying to find me so was looking the other way - I was getting an ice cream at the time, so always felt guilty about that. Look up the Barkley 100 Its not the longest ultra marathon, but its one where you need to find the course while you're running it. Deep in the mountains of Tennessee, a deranged old man hides books in a course layout that he concocts every year.. Runners have to orient themselves in uneven terrain and pitch black murky conditions and retrieve all of the pages they are assigned in order to finish. Not sure on the time limit, but running in the middle of nature, using your primal instincts and basic analog navigation equipment to run a course that may or may not be correct has to be just as transcendent as running through the same scenery 30000 times on a loop.

Hey Thoughty2, if you break it down. the top runner was around 3.1mph per day. now that's 24/7 so he was probably running/jogging around 4-4.5mph for around 16-18 hours. if he went a bit faster, less running time and longer recovery. When you think of it in numbers, it's not that crazy. It's more, can you run for a living. Look at loggers, or hard professions where they endure all day.

Well actually, Marathon does not mean long. It is the name of a town near Athens, Greece where a battle was fought in 490 BCE. The Athenians won the Persians and it is said that one Greek soldier named Pheidippides ran all the way back to Athens to inform the city about the battle.
