I just rescued one from a big box store. My kids tipped it over in the cart, and a decent amount of water poured out! (Nursery pot inside pretty pot) No wonder it was on clearance, they were killing it. Now I get to let it dry a bit and be happy 😊

I was ALL about your dog joining the show, I very PROUDLY wear my shirt that says "I'm sorry I can't, I have dogs & plants that need me" all the time!😂 Thanks for the information. Very helpful as I didn't realize the same cycles occur w/allocasias as with colocasias. I have TONS of colocasias, & just recently started adding allocasias to my indoor collection.

My alocasia bambino is loving my bathroom since it's high humidity. I plan on getting a small grow light for it since that room has a skylight but doesn't receive a whole ton of light. It is growing very well and produces about 1 new leaf per week and already has a smaller plant that sprouted from a little corm.

I had a big spider mite issue with on of my alocasias, and it was so close to all of my other plants that I was worried, but it was too big to move, but the funny thing is that it didn’t spread to any other plants. I’m still in the process of treating it, and it definitely lost a few leaves. I was worried it was because of spider mites, but one of them died before the spider mites, so that one was just from needing to grow more. Thanks for the tips and informative video!

I got my alocasia black velvet a week ago not knowing it was a fussy plant (I'm a newbie in house plants lol) but it has been pretty happy so far! I live in a high humidity area so that is probably why. I doused some neem oil on the leaves hoping to prevent pests as I imagined the velvety leaves would be very very prone to something.

Thank you for this video. I have an Alocasia Polly and how it's surviving and healthy is a mystery. All conditions are opposite to what I've heard elsewhere and what you're saying. It's in a 4 inch pot with 3 beautiful leaves. I got it only about 3 months ago. I give it hard tap water, it's in a cold north facing window, the humidity in my house is between 20% and 24%, never more and the temp does fluxuate. So, we'll see. Great videos!

@@Valentina-km8cg wow. You must have charmed it or something because mine has sulked all winter with one leaf, having lost the 2 other big leaves it had when I bought it last June. It's being a madam but I definitely underwater it, so I've started ramping up the water, using spring or rain water, and a little feed starting this month as the light levels are getting good again in uk. I have a Polly, and it is definitely the happiest plant in my collection (which is weird). Usually when they have flowers, they will lose one leaf or more later one (but that's normal). That's the reason why some people cut theirs flowers before they bloom (so maybe it is what's happening with your plant). However, I let my allocasia flower, and I get more and more leaves every year during the growing season (during winter I have 2 or 3, during summer I have three times that), and the plant produced babies by herself. I don't have much light, don't fertilise that much, but I did group it with smaller plants which love humidity and water without taking her light. The plant will not forgive even few hours in the cold but they grow back during spring.

Yes of course - when I did it I just kept them in the pot with dry soil in the attic. They like dark and somewhere not too warm (as this can cause them to start rotting). I checked them every few weeks or so to make sure they were ok and then planted them back up in the spring!

Hello. I hope you can help me with my alocasia amazonica polly. There's been a lot of humidity where i live and since saturday her leaves have a drop of water on the edges 24/7. One of the leaves, the one with less light cause of positioning, had several drops and was totally brown on the edge. Had to cut it off as it was starting to rot, basically. We didn't overwater it, only watered it once when it came (7 days ago) with rain water. We moved it to a better location yesterday, with more indirect bright light but if you have any tips i would apreciate it. Thank you.

*** CAN ANYONE ANSWER THIS QUESTION ??? *** I just bought a massive one like your biggest one in the back but mine has purply black with green stems leaves. Called: alocasia regal shield. how can I clean this type of leaves, it's not as shinny as your green one... The leave are a little fuzzy on top. So I cannot put water on them while wiping them down? Maybe I can use water neem mixture just on the bottom of the leaves? It has some kind of orangey slimy fuzzy looking bugs. I need to clean it super good. Please tell me how! It's gorgeous. I don't want those bugs spreading to the rest of my large collection... Unfortunately it needs the light and has to be in that room. Thanks anyone who can tell me. By the way this video is amazing! Alocasia can be slightly tricky (or at least they were for me at first) until you get used to what they like/don't like. Certain types of monstera are great (deliciosa, standleyana, dubia, siltepecana) along with epipremnum as a genus (they all tend to be very straight forward). If you're after something super easy that doesn't require much care, also things like the ZZ plant and snake plants are great! 💚

(yay for not killing it) The stembase seems to become taller and taller, I now have the fear of it tilting over and snapping at the base. Is there anything I can or should do to reduce the base length and or the rate of which this base is growing? So far I've repotted it once with the next repot planned in Feb and pruned old or damaged leaves.

I bought some alocasias, first time owning them, the one i bought a month or so ago, is doing well and throwing out new leaves constantly, 2 more about to unfurl right now. I received one (zebrina) on wednesday (2 days ago) but its a bit bigger/older than my other one, it has 2 largeish leaves (about hand size) but 1 of them is yellowing, almost turning white in patches. the other one is still green but it points down towards the floor (its not perky) is this shock from posting? it was packaged well but i do believe it was sent on the monday and arrived on Wednesday. do i just chop that leaf? is it about to go dormant for winter? if it loses both leaves, do i remove the tubers from the soil and store them til spring? or leave them in the soil? I'm so panicked that I will do something wrong and kill her lol. This is my first winter with a plant that actively goes dormant/loses leaves, so I'm just not sure what to expect or when i need to worry xD any advice on dormancy or travel shock would be greatly appreciated.

@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven 2 жыл бұрын
The main things that spring to mind are light and water. Leaves can drop when the light they're receiving isn't good enough - they'll essentially sacrifice some leaves so that the main body of the plant can conserve it's energy. They can also be really sensitive to too little/too much water, so making sure you're only watering them as and when they actually need it is best. When you do water, make sure to thoroughly soak the soil so that the whole root system's targeted

You're right it could definitely be due to the time of year - as I say they tend to like it warm and bright, so maybe your plant just wasn't getting enough energy to pump out a bigger one at the moment. Fingers crossed she'll give you some great new growth soon!

@TheJungleHaven

Hiya - I'd think from what you've said it's probably going into a kind of "hibernation" state. Have you checked the roots to make sure they're not rotting or anything? Assuming they're fine, I'd suggest maybe storing the tubers (I kept my zebrina ones in the attic cause they like it fairly cool and dark, and just checked them regularly). You can then plant it back up when it comes to spring and it should grow back healthily!

"water thoroughly" and "not a believer in light watering" you must take into account that not all houses have the same conditions my house by default has +60 humidly, the cooler side and with minimum airflow. I once took the advice of "watering thoroughly" and let the pot drain for half an hour in the bathtub before placing it back this killed 2 of my Alocasias, 2 Syngoniums and 3 calatheas, cutting the rotten roots and repotting didnt help. ever since then, ive been light watering when the top soil is dry and the pot feels "lighter", haven't had any root rot issues.

My elephant ears lost all of it's leaves. It has always struggled but I am hoping that because it is winter here it is just dormant. Should I leave it in the pot or check that I am not wasting my time?

They can go into dormancy over the winter months, but if I were you I'd just check the roots to make sure there's no underlying cause such as root rot. If they look fine you can store the bulbs and plant them again come spring 💚

Hi, I've just brought home an alocasia purple sword which is not in very good soil. Should I immediately repot it into an aroid mix or wait a while? It's my first alocasia. Thank you.

I usually try to leave it about a week before repotting to allow my plants to adjust, however if you're concerned then yes maybe repot now 💚

I also just bought a dragon scale from Walmart. When I brought it home I checked it for pests on the leaves, but I noticed a small brown worm w/a lot of legs coming out of the soil. I now that I'm not supposed to replant or bother the roots when bringing it home, but since I saw that I had to. So I changed out the soil & watered it. Six days later it's droopy looking, and the soil still looks a bit damp. It receives the indirect morning light from my east window. Do you think it's because I disturbed the roots or is it acclimating? Could you give me a few tips, thanks.

They can be super sensitive plants when it comes to change, so it's probably just in shock. Keep it's environment as warm and humid as possible as well as making sure the soil stays moist (but not saturated). If you don't have a humidifier you could try popping it into a sealed sandwich bag - I've often found this helps when acclimating new plants 💚

I'm thinking of companion planting a small Alocasia Macrorrhiza Variegated in the same pot as a medium AMV - the AMV medium is 2-3" high ... one stem ... any issues? pot is 9" wide- medium AMV is in the middle of the pot - thank you!

I wouldn't have thought you'd have issues with that - alocasias often naturally produce bulbs which grow into smaller plants in the same pot anyway, so I reckon it would be fine 💚

Can you spray the leaves with water to increase humidity ?
@TheJungleHaven
@TheJungleHaven 2 жыл бұрын
Misting isn't the best way to increase humidity as it's a super temporary fix and isn't very sustainable. As I mention in this video too, plants with velvety leaves don't like their leaves to get wet, so misting isn't great for them. If you don't have a humidifier give pebble trays a go, or group lots of your plants together (as they transpire they naturally provide humidity which helps the other plants out)

95% of my plants are now not in soil. Mostly in Leca, Pon or Water. I find it easier to handle and easier to care especially when you starts to travel.

I water mine when it’s dry and then the leaves drip…why?
@TheJungleHaven

It's totally normal and is just transpiration (kind of like your plant breathing/sweating and getting rid of anything it doesn't need) 💚

The stand advice to let tap water sit for 12 hours is fast becoming antiquated! Municipal water systems have largely gone over to a different type of Chlorine that stays in the water and does not evaporate out. If you kill three plants with toxic tap water, you could have paid for a Reverse Osmosis system for your home. You don't need a plumber to install it and the water is much better for YOU as well.

I use aquarium water conditioner to treat the water, like I did for my fish tank. If fish and aquatic plants were fine, why terrestrial plants wouldn't?

Why everyone is making the same mistake suggesting Rain water for plants. There are more chemicals, smoke and poison in the air that comes down with the rain drops. I always use my filtered water. Have a Brita water filter or use your fridge filtered water, let it sit and get the room temperature and water your plants. Much cheaper, easier and safer.

I think it depends on where abouts you live - if you're in a big polluted city then maybe, but it's honestly done wonders for my plants. That and fishtank water they absolutely lap up 💚

IMO these plants are actually "easier" than succulents cause it's usually more obvious when they actually need a drink 💚
