Hi Gillian. We used to sail for 10 years in the caribbean islands. To clean your teak, you do not have to buy teak cleaner. Just use granular washing machine soap with salt water and a scotch pad. Cheaper and good solution. Just make sure to rinse with fresh water at the end to remove salt before to let it dry than apply your teak oil.

Here's a tip from a 30+ year wood worker. That teak oil is 5% teak oil at best. Prep with 0000 steel wool and use plain old mineral oil (like from CVS) 50/50 with denatured alcohol. The toughest part will be prepping the wood to remove all that old poly additive finish. However, once your done apply the mineral oil mix as needed. I have some outdoor furniture that's 20 years old and looks as good as the day I made it 👍. You'll save a ton of $$$. 👍😎

The hardest part of getting old for me is that young people treat you like a child and all my information gathered from years of sailing and 35,000 miles at sea is ignored.

Good job on varnishing/oiling. Let me point out that teak wood has multiple grains. This is why it gets high spots and low spots. One grain is softer than the other. The softer grain gets eaten by bacteria leaving the harder grain to stand out. The darker color is not the wood but the build up of bacteria. Oiling over varnishing over it just locks in the bacteria. Teak is naturally a golden colour, graying is the start of deterioration, and bacteria build. Even though teak has its own natural oils, the reason why it is an excellent wood in or around water. But UV does deteriorate the oils on the surface. Using the acidic cleaner does eat the softer grain, thus leaving the harder grain to protrude even more than it is. From an expert, may I suggest. It is best to sand the teak to bring it back to uniform levels , especially if it hasn't been done for years. You will get a truer result that will last much longer. Teak oil is a waste of time and money, it will last maybe a summer in the hot sun, It's good for interior work. May I suggest you try Cetol natural teak, by sikkens/ interulx. You will get a few years out of your work. Hope this helps if you decide. Your issue with chimney creating down draft, is because your deck Stack is not tall enough. You should have at least 3 feet to create good airflow from the deck. A removable Stack can be taken down while underway,and cap put on to keep water from entering the boat in heavy weather . I'm under the impression that you think nothing could happen to your boat from what I see. I would assume the coast guard didn't try your manual bilge pump to see if it's operating properly. It is mandatory on your size boat to have a secondary manual pump that works, for obvious reasons. Let me point out something that you are not realizing, and also brushed aside. The screw that you drilled through the hose fixture, it has penetrated the other side. This will end up snagging fin particles like hair etc from the bilge building up , eventually blocking the hose. Hoses for pumps, especially ones that mean the sinking ,or worse, loss of life. I do see a kink in your hose, at the hose clamp, meaning you won't get full flow,and buildup from matter in the bilge. As well your hose looks extremely brittle, and possibly could crack under strain. Hoses like anything have a life span. Something so important, and cheap shouldn't be taken as trivial. If you like your boat take care of her , she will take care of you. Or unless you think nothing could happen to your boat. Some advice from 40 years of sailing, professionally, and pleasure. Finally, you are looking as gorgeous as ever. Don't take anything as trivial when it has to do with safety. There is a valid reason for the minimum mandatory requirements on boats. To save lives, yours and rescuers.

Love your videos detailing your liveaboard routine. In a years time I'm planning on buying a sailboat and liveaboard. I've been looking at Catalinas 27- 30 footers. I find them to be so roomy and also there are so many for sale in different price ranges. My intention is to move to Maryland and liveaboard on one of several marinas they have there, which allow Liveaboards. I can't wait to start this adventure with me and my 2 dogs. One of my dogs is getting older, almost 13 now, and i want to start this adventure while she's still here with me. I keep telling her, Jersey you better hold on, we have another adventure coming. Thank you for sharing such wonderfully edited videos, showcasing your boat life and the beautiful surroundings in your daily life. Enjoying your channel greatly, the "PNW Liveaboard Reality Channel" 👍 (I'm a liveaboard in puget sound). I hate giving advice in light of all the plethora of 'advice' given here in the comments, but I'm compelled to add that the manual bilge pump has the incorrect size of hose, which is the problem. Replace with that white 'accordian' looking hose (non-collapsing) at your local marine store, which fits on the outside of the pump connection (not inside). No goop or screw required, just hose clamp(s).

If you do not mind the roughness of your teak but want to protect it and make it look much nicer, I would suggest Semco Teak Sealer. They make an excellent two-part brightener which will get the teak back to its natural color and the sealer can but put right over the teak and protect it from the sun and salt. I did it to my C30 four years ago and just need to wipe on once light coat spring and fall and it looks the same today as it did four years ago.

I just put Semco on my C25's brightwork this year. I sanded the old, yellowing, peeling and crusty Cetol away and put this on instead, hoping to just keep putting fresh coats once a year without further sanding. Is this still holding up for you? What did you use for application (I used just a rag wipe-on like linseed or danish oil for my woodwork)?

@@CodeSquares That is how I do it. I keep an old terry cloth wash cloth and cut a 2"x2" square for an applicator. On mine, I sanded a little and then used a 2-part teak cleaner which gets all of the black, decayed wood fibers out of the grooves. I then sanded again to flatten the tops of the grain somewhat. Then I applied the Semco until it would not soak in anymore. Now with a twice-yearly application it takes hardly any additional project and holds up well.

AT 14:00 the previous owner used the wrong size hose (likely due to what was available). The hose should fit over the pump outlet and the hose clamp will seal it. Measure the pump outlet outside diameter (it appears to be about 80 mm or 3 1/4 inch) hard to tell from the video. Measure the through hole exit point to see if they are the same diameter. Since the outlet is low pressure, you can use PVC pipe from any hardware store to make an adapter if needed.

Yes, put the proper size hose on that bilge pump and check any other pumps for the same problem! Not good the way it is. Consider a small board for your stove. The bottom could get hot and cause damage. Enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing.

There is some prep that will give you a great restoration of the greyed out teak. Just get a scotchbright pad and some teakbright cleaner and scrub and rinse 3 or 4 times. If its quit degraded (like yours) you can sand the surface with a sanding block or orbital sander before applying the teakbright cleaner. Make sure you rinse the surface with soapy water and let fully dry before applying the teak oil. I apply the teak oil with a clean scotchbright, let soak in for a minute then wipe the excess off. I repeat the oil process every 30min, at least 3 times.

I rebuilt my own mooring after it broke free ( wasn't on it). Previous owner told me he had just serviced it, but you can't trust just anyone to service a mooring. Because few people maintain them properly, its important to regularly dive it for inspection. You can just jump in with a mask and pull yourself down the chain while looking at the tackle. A robust mooring instalation can be a hazard after just 2yrs.

Fiberglass has similar thermal properties to concrete, it will absorb a lot of heat, and acts as a good thermal conductor that will wick heat out of the boat, but once it gets hot, it will stay hot radiating that heat for quite a while. On my boat I have taken those 1" thick floor mats made of closed cell EVA foam like they use in the gym, and have glued them to my hull everywhere, this gives me good insulation, and makes the boat stay so much more comfortable, and it also stops condensation.

Actually, the teak cleaner does more than brighten the teak. It helps clean the dirt and the grime embedded and opens the grain for teak oil or whatever is applied to soak in properly so the oil (in your case) does what it is supposed to do. It soaks in deep into the wood, rather than a topical application and stops the teak from drying and cracking. Think of it as a preserver of teak. If you have tried to paint plywood you may have experienced how the first coat you applied does nothing to cover the grain. It takes many coats to cover the plywood from looking like plywood because the paint is on the surface not soaking in. The same applies to teak. You want the oil to soak in, not just painted on.

Teak. Yeah. It can be a pain. But. You can care for it well and cheaply. I would suggest you sand the wash boards. Get the varnish off. Scuff up the just oiled teak. Then. Cheap trick. Scrub them with white vinegar and a good stiff brush. Rinse and repeat. On unoiled teak, merely dirty and dark, it works miraculously and is dirt cheap. Dry, lightly sand then decide to leave natural or oil. Cheap trick. Don't go nutz sanding. Light.

No, no, no. The outside diameter on the pump flange should equal the inside diameter of the hose that comes from the pump. What you have now is a disaster waiting to happen. While very often not used, when it is necessary, your bilge pump needs to be just right. Also there is a bolt missing on the pump body.
