rendered fat is 3500 calories per lb. Moose meat is 500 calories per lb. so WHICH should you prioritize? Also, there's fat soluble vitamins and the meat doesnt have any of those vitamins. I'd have let 50 lbs of meat rot before I'd let 10 lb of marrow rot.

there's NEVER been a complete lack of food, IF you made the pontoo outrigger raft, enough netting and knew how to use it. I know that there's a lime to how much netting you can have in the water, but who's to know, and how? How to know if I baited in a bear, or just stumbled across one? How to know if I snared a bear to a drag log? Nothing says I cant wrap nettting around stick frame boxes and catch crabs, birds and rabbits that way. Beats making spoons, chairs, dream catchers, jewelry, musical instrucments as a passtime, eh?

Active hook and line fishing is a waste of time and calories in cold weather, If I made a bunch of hooks out of the judohead blunt arrow-tips, I'd make them into barbed treblehooks, bait them and set them as trotlines. It beats making chairs, musical instruments, dream-catchers and jewelry. Netting is the way to catch enough fish and baiting in a bear to your tree blind is a LOT more probable event than luckily having a moose or ox on your little 2 sq miles of allotted land. Bears can detect the stench of 50 lbs of whole fish and 50 lbs of fish parts from miles away and that's what you need to have happen. Also, bears, ready to hibernate, are 25% bodyfat, Fat offers 6-7x as many calories per lb as moose meat.. It's much easier to render down and preserve 50 lbs of fat than 500 lbs of moose meat. and you dont need nearly as much salt or fuel/cooking to preserve/eat the fat, mixed with some cambium and fish/meat. Much, much better deal, to catch 200 lbs of fish and arrow a 250 lb bear., than to shoot a 1200 lb moose. and very nearly as many calories.

moose guy IS a weak punk, but I think that it's 50% likely that he took a dive on this so that viewers will not be convinced that a big kill means that the successful hunter has the win in the bag.

the more fish you catch, the more you WILL catch, if you butcher them in the weir and arrange for the scent-taste of blood and guts stays in the weir. Some days you'll catch 10 lbs of fish, others just 2 lbs. But that will go a long ways, mixed with cambium, towards cutting down how much weight you lose every day. After you boil most of the fat out of the fishheads and guts, leave the residue in the stake and log bait box for the bears. Get busy making the kiln and the charcoal for firing the ceramic pots that you so desperately need. You should make 8 of the 1.5 gallon pots and lids, so that when (not if) 2 break in the firing and one breaks when boiling water you'll still have the 5 that you need.

Sine I'd have taken the 3 lb block of sea salt, I'd have dipped the big pieces of meat into a salty brine, to help preserve the meat until I could smoke/cure it. The organs will perish first and have the most nutirition, so eat/presever those first. Fat renders easily and then is well preseved, has the most calories per lb, so that would be next and then the jerky would be last. Once it's sub 40F at night, a tarp and tape bag, buried in the ground, will refrigerated the meat strips until I can smoke/cure them.

unless the moose guy REALLY screws up, he had it won as soon as he preserved the meat. I'd have abandoned the hide, eaten the brain, given 200 lbs of the meat to the editing crew and not exhausted myself preserving what I didn't need. I'd have saved the marrow in the big bones, rendered it down along with the fat, the blood.

there's always lots of fish in a lake. wth would they GO, hmm? Those canadian lakes are all famous for being FULL of BIG trout, salmon, pike, muskies, They just dont know to use a baited weir and a seine, that's all. When you sweep a 60 ft long, seine thru say, a -20 ft wide stretch of heavily baited water, averaging 2 ft deep, 2400 cubic feet of water and you can do so at least 3x per day. There aint 5 lbs of fish in 7000 cubic feet of water, near the shore, where all of the bugs, warmer water, etc are? Baloney. Once you attach one end of your seine to the end of one of the "wings" of the weir, and circle around a bit with the seine, towards the end of the OTHER wing of the weir, and start splashing the water, nearly all of the fish in that semicircle are as good as in the trap/butchered.

he needs to be eating half a lb of rendered fat/blood/marrow per day, 1500 calories AND 3 lbs of meat per day 1500 calories. Moose meat is very dry, 500 calories per lb. If all you eat is the meat, youll starve. It was stupid to lose the marrow in the big bones, Marrow is fat and you NEED the fat. you cant choke down enough lean fish or meat to keep from losing weight. 4 lbs of it per day is about all you an manage. That's just 2000 caloriies and you need 3000 calories per day in order to hole up in the shelter and lose no weigtht.
