I was waiting to see if you would mention scrambling eggs and then freezing them. We used to raise hens for eggs and to keep up with the production, that's what I would do. I'd scramble them in the blender, then put them into ziplock freezer bags with how many eggs were in the bag. Worked great for baking and scrambled eggs. Now, at the cabin, we usually buy the crates of eggs and keep them in the coldest part of the cabin. We have a cellar that stays pretty cool. Eggs last quite awhile at room temperature as well. So I bring up enough to last about a week. I do envy your freezers! Being off grid we have to wait til it freezes outside to be able to bring in anything frozen. I'm looking forward to heading into town in a week and getting frozen veggies! Not a fan of canned. Take care, girl! -Sue

Do the same with bagels use the same bags purchased in will last a month put in tightly fitting container placed in thick trash bag. You are so appreciated anything you can share for encouraging women to live a self sufficient life. Another idea is to make flour from ground up oats. Alone! I loved this video! Although I was truly sad that the hunt was not a successful one 😢 Loved seeing you preserving the eggs! I know so many that swear by it; it makes perfect sense for you! I’d love to do it, but I don’t need that many eggs stored away, lol! Some thing that brought back a trip down memory lane, from my early single mom days (I was broke!), was when I saw your cans of green chilis- one of my now 37 yr old daughters favorite dishes that I make, is with the leftovers of any beef that we’ve had. Sometimes there’s just a little bit left over that doesn’t quite fit into leftovers for the family the next night. So, I used to save bite size bits of steak, roasts, London broil, etc., by coating it a bit in olive oil, and freezing in a Ziploc bag. I would just keep adding to the bag. The oil would aid against freezer burn. Anyways, every once in a while I would take that bag of beef out, dredge it in flour mixed with our our favorite seasonings (garlic, onion, etc.), and then sear it up again in a skillet. I would then add diced onions, cubed up potatoes, a can or two of green chilies, plus whatever broth I had on hand. It would simmer about an hour, getting super tender. At the very tail end I would dice up a tomato and add it, too. By that point it was thickened up like gravy. I would make some homemade tortillas, and it was one of the best meals we’d have all year. To this day, my 37 year old daughter, when she’s stressed out, and needing some comfort food, will request that I make her that. She shows up with a bottle of wine and an appetite. It makes for some really wonderful Momma daughter time! So far the last few weeks I’ve been able to make a ton of jam; mango lime, nectarine & ginger, as well as apple butter. A ton of tomato sauce, too. We have a place here, that for a donation of $10, you can purchase 60 pounds of produce, that would normally be thrown away by the stores. It’s hit or miss some weeks, but I’ve been able to put up some wonderful things for pennies! Overflow I can’t use, I simply give away to other people. But seriously, out of my $10, I now have enough canned jams, tomato sauce, pickles, etc. for just over a year. Well, I’ve chatted your ear off now and it’s time for bed. Can’t wait to see the next videos of all the changes! Stay safe! Hugs, 🔥114°🔥

I think the meals we made our kids back when we were "broke" turned out to be some of the best meals we have ever had as well. I would stock up on veggies since they were cheap and its what got my kids to LOVE veggies! My daughter even became a vegetarian (about 95% of the time) There were times my son and I would be eating some pretty nice steak or bacon and she would want some! NOTHING went to waste! Oh the concoctions we came up with could fill a cook book! If I remembered what we did! I love the fact that my kids love fruits and veggies and weren't much into junk food. Even when I would splurge and take them out to eat, they were usually disappointed. You had mentioned the 10$ for 60lbs but I had no idea you got that much out of it! When I would garden, the funny looking veggies always tasted the best! It was like they were trying to show you they were different and better tasting! I would cook up the funny veggies first and they always tasted yummy! But I would think in Arizona, all your veggies were basically stir fried already before they were picked from the garden! (114F!! HA!) I am feeling the cold creeping in though! A fire always seems required for at least one full burn. Nothing like cold to make you sleep better though! I always love to hear the stories Janet! Idk if you know this or not but you can actually grow your potatoes in a few big sized tires and as they grow up out the top of them just keep laying another tire ontop of it and put more dirt into the tire and repeat it until you can barely reach the top of the tires and when it starts getting cold outside they'll not freeze from the temperatures cause of being in the dirt itself too and when you want to eat a few of them just dig them out and eat them but make sure that you recover the other ones back up below the freeze level in the ground too and if you do that they'll keep all winter long as well too this the way the ol timers done it around where I live at too

It’s much better to use BPA free plastic containers like an ace container or a long Pep Boys container. Tires will leak dangerous chemicals into the soil and the plants that’s really not a good way to do it.

@@livingintheforest3963 that's weird that you are saying that now because I'm 47 years old and I've seen people doing it since I was a kid and never had any problems with it either because they were never any chemicals in the tires anytime before or after they were used
@charlottecannon3142 жыл бұрын
Rubber has petroleum and other chemicals in them, and yes forever chemicals that do leach out into the environment, including into foods grown in them. I would never recommend using tires for growing perishables. Wooden crates or wooden barrels -other, yes - .

I think you are talking about potato towers? Make them with tires or chicken wire and hay. I definitely plan on growing a ton of potatoes and will have the space to do it. However that may be a great idea until I get my garden up and running. I still have to protect the towers from the moose or bears or they will just get free potatoes! I will have to research about how they hold up to the freezing temps we get here though. Sometimes -60F. There are some old tires here but probably only about 4-5. Thank you so much James!

So many projects got done and I am excited to show it to you. Next video promise! My "neighbors" I met in a very short amount of time. I went from not knowing anyone to meeting them both in about a two week span. The fire chief is a very nice guy and just darts around the town helping EVERYONE in whatever they need. The ex military family offered me salmon and would have given me many eggs if they hadn't just just sent all their chickens to "freezer camp". If I get 1-2 caribou, I will keep what I can and share with both, the guy who fixed my oil burner and my contractor. He prefers caribou over moose so I would like to get one for him. Not sure how well they’ll do since they’ve been washed, but I won’t know until I try. I just bought 4 cases of apples from there and I’ve been making applesauce non-stop that I’ve been water-canning. I also found chayote there, which is my favorite vegetable. Ever. It’s used in a lot of Hispanic cooking, and although I love that cuisine, my husband does not. The little things that give us joy, a real egg or coffee creamer or onions that are still good and its February..glad things are all set for you.

Definitely! I am prepared to have to take everything out side or to the vehicle if needed and everything will stay nice and frozen! always nice to make the best of the situation and defrost or clean the freezers at the same time though! Normally eggs are put in sealed jars and can actually stay edible for two years! My method is more for 6-12 months. But I will show what they look like when I use them! My grocery hauls are basically restocking the Alone grocery store. I never have a list based on recipes. Just keep a good supply of stuff and I can make just about anything! So good to watch your videos again, we've all missed seeing you on them. We love your videos and all of the helpful tips and information - thanks so much. Hope you are getting settled back into your regular routine and getting prepared for winter. They are calling for a brutal winter, hopefully not - they've been wrong before, but we've had it fairly easy down here in the lower 48 the last couple of years, so we will see how it goes. I like your calmness, realness, your mindset, and strong will, your drive - to push right through any challenges - and find your videos very relaxing and informative. Thanks for all you do for your viewers. Stay warm, and enjoy the calm, peace and beauty - in this coming short fall and winter. Best wishes. God Bless you.

It is really nice to be back with my KZbin family again! The routine is still a bit crazy though. So many boxes that need to be unpacked or sorted. But at least my son helped me place all the heavy furniture! I am glad you are enjoying my videos though. I have been told I should smile more but I am really content here and I may not be smiling but very relaxed ... usually. Funny thing about pushing through challenges is sometimes they just pile up and that's when I end up being more calm Its more of a just do what I can do. It would be so much easier with another person here but then maybe not as quiet! The locals here told me that last winter was an unusually heavy winter. So my first winter here, Alaska really wanted to test me I guess! But with all the rain we have received for over a month, the prediction is it will be lighter this year! We will see! But I certainly am enjoying the fall here. Nothing like just walking outside and hearing nothing but the breeze in the trees. Thank you so much Charlotte!

I'm having a hard time trying to find like parsnips rutabaga and certain things I go to a store and buy certain things and I will cut off the root like celery or whatever and stick it in the ground and it grows because of the price of certain food is so crazy that I don't throw anything away if anything it's got the root top I'll just stick it in the water for a little bit till it sprouts more and then stick it in the ground and it grows for me I can grow anything and it saves me a lot of money too plus not only I eat it I spoil my chickens in my rabbits daily too but then also a lot of things that people says is weeds I'll go out and pull them in a little section that I've got for myself my chickens in my rabbits feed them healthy and I'd love to dehydrate dehydrating preserves food a lot better and when I know certain things can get down to freezing I don't want my jars freezing plus it's less space and just add a little bit of water any of my dehydrated food like I've loved my fried green tomatoes I've got them in the winter and I love to make my homemade granola which is very expensive

Oh, you reminded me my childhood & my grandma, when I lived in the village. We had a root cellar there with a big... let it be the box, with about of 10 inches of wet river sand on the bottom. We stored the carrots, potatoes, beets and even watermelons in the sand. Yes, you do everything right, don't washing the vegetables. So, If you could have some big mmm... it's like a raised bed made from wooden boards and filled with the sand, then you could store a lot of vegetables. So, thanks for the video, cheers from Lithuania :-)

Lithuania! That is so cool! I think many of the "old ways" of food preservation I have learned have come from over seas. Seems to be more popular overseas even today. But I do plan on building (in my root cellar) big permanent boxes filled with sand so as you said, I can have a raised beds of stored veggies all winter! 😁 Hopefully I can get that built next year! The moose on my property was just pure luck! Poor thing left a huge blood puddle where it fell and after it started running it was more or less easy to follow but we lost it anyway! That was just frustrating! I have a hard time walking through the woods on my property. That darn moose just ran with its huge antlers like it was ice skating through the trees! Amazing animal! The next caribou season opens end of this month. I hope I get the two! One will be nice though! I wasn't thinking that hunting would happen for me for awhile yet! I was concentrating on trying to get out fishing but just couldn't break away! Heck I would be happy to throw a line in the pond near my cabin even though (I don't think) there are any fish there. Alone, I have water glasses eggs and it really does work. A couple things I have observed; don’t use a lg bucket because you can’t rotate your eggs meaning, last in first out, so first in becomes last out. They are still good to eat after 8 months, but, eventually, the longer they went, the easier the yolk would break if you’re wanting over easy or medium eggs. Idk if it had anything to do with the chickens diet or not. Also, you can put a bloom back on your eggs and even store them in the cartons at room temp for a few weeks by first washing off all the poo or mud or yuck, let them dry, and with your hands saturated with mineral oil, coat them. I’ve done this with store bought eggs as well. Let them come to room temp so as to avoid any sweat or moisture and coat them with mineral oil. They will keep for a few weeks. I think the longest I went was 5, but, they spoiled by that time so I don’t actually know a good cut off time. Glassing will be your safest way to go. I’ve not tried glassing store bought mineral oil coated eggs, but I might experiment with that n future. I’m really glad you’ve gotten aquatinted with your neighbors. I’m sure you all will watch out for each other as you can. Momma hen here, is really glad for your safety in that. I know you can manage well enough, it’s just a little easier with friends to help should you need them. Looks to me like you are set. 5-6 months is a long time to be alone. If you are happy and content with that then I’m happy for you. I’d be very lonely. Again, with the neighbors thing! It was a good video. I’m looking forward to your next one. I know you are getting your house in order and putting systems in place like we’d talked about a few videos back. God bless you dear sister and keep you warm and safe and well fed! Scratches and hugs to Kenai. I had to put my 11 yr old beautiful boy down a week ago today. I miss him terribly. Enjoy your beautiful boy as much as you can. I’ve no doubt you do. He sure does love you! Take care!

I usually only water glass eggs to last the winter but what you are saying about using a small container definitely makes sense! I normally only use eggs for baking and not so much eggs over easy. But hey I was not aware of redoing the bloom on eggs! That is awesome info! Thank you! I may try and experiment on that as well! It is nice to get to know some of my neighbors! They are similar to me as they like to be left alone but I know that if ANYONE here needs help that everyone would. It is a nice sense of security to have! I do enjoy the alone time though. The solitude is very therapeutic to me. I guess living in the city where I couldn't even go outside to garden without someone wanting to chat has got me to really enjoy all this "me time". I am very sorry to hear about your 11 year old pups. Even more so because I took so long to respond to your comment. I'm sure even by now that you still miss him very much. Kenai is my buddy out here. I talk to him all day long and he pretends to understand me by running to the container that has his treats. I do spoil him rotten and have been known to cook a nice steak for him from time to time. I hope all is well with you Lisa and I hope you have a great New Year. 🤗🧡

OH my good friend, what an exciting opportunity you had to go Moose hunting. !!!!!I'm so chuffed for you Alone !!!!! 👏👏👏 Bummer you missed out on popping one off but at least you've met and know your neighbour now and I'm sure you'll be invited again 👏👏👏👏 Great to see you've restocked your larder and pantry, freezer, and root cellar !!!! You touched a special place in my heart, that brought tears welling up in my eyes as I recalled mother using what appeared to be the same kind of method she used to preserve the fresh eggs over the winter months when I was about a 10 yr old. She stored them in an old kerosene tin with the top removed . Really big tin and the consistency looked the same altho I'm thinking the mixture wasn't quite as pre-prepared back then as it is now days. Funny how some things 60 yrs down the track are different yet the same. Thankyou for all the sharing you do, the memories are ever so precious. It's lovely living vicariously thru you & your videos as it's like a re-run of my life.( Born & raised a farm girl , middle one of 7 kids in Sth Otago NZ) Altho I've never lived in Alaska, nor was it ever as cold and dark for so long as your winter months, but things are more exaggerated as a child. Which reminds me how cool it was to see your son there with you, and the lengths you went to interview him hahahaha like pulling teeth ... like the gr-son I raised LOL Treasure your kids tho.... my son suicided at 25yold, 15 yrs ago, miss him awfully , thank God I have a daughter and I've tried to stay a part of her life her hubby and 3 grkids. The grson I raised was my sons only boy and now ,at 20, he's way off the rails and into all sorts of mind altering stuff. I've no idea why they make these choices in life but there you are . When I gasp at the gloriousness of Gods creation in particular in your remoteness of such beauty and the magnitude of the landscape and the wild animals, I'm bewildered as to WHY people are so desperate to try and escape such incredible natural wonders. Thankyou again Alone, for sharing such awe-inspiring adventures. Blessings all the way from Down Under , now an Aussie Nan much love and prayers your way🇦🇺🤗💞🙏👍✌️👏👏👏❤️🇺🇲

The moose hunting was done by my contractor and Aaron and they managed to almost get one in my backyard! Moose are just tough! The one they shot got up and just ran for miles! We never found him. But the caribou hunting season opens up again in a few weeks so I hope I can get 1-2 soon! Glassing eggs is something I tried in Colorado and it works perfectly. If they are stored in a sealed jar and stored in a cold dark room, they can last for 2 years! I really cant wrap my head around how these things were figured out "back in the day"! But I love to learn them and use all the techniques I can! My goal here is to live as "pioneer" as I can. Yes I have electricity and freezers but if there was an option to do it another way, I would! This video seems to have brought back memories from others as well. I am trying to live like you did as a kid! I think you were lucky to be raised that way! Speaking of raised that way! Having my son here was a cherished memory and so will all the times he comes to visit again! I tear up 😪 thinking what you had to go through losing your son! Same age as mine. Luckily my kids stayed away from the mind altering stuff. At least until they were out on their own. Not wishful thinking as my kids and I talked about all kinds of stuff. Some stuff mothers would rather not know! 🤔 I know not everyone could live this life and that is 100% understandable. Some come all the way out here and build cabins with all the conveniences they had in the city. Microwaves and TVs! And I don't fault them for that either. But everyone should go out in nature and just soak it up! It is amazing what can happen when you can just calm your mind! Thank you for living vicariously through my channel Heather! I hope I can continue to send you on trips down memory lane of your childhood!

I live just on the edge of town and the past 2 years have bin Growing and Raising most of what I eat and my freezer is full to the top and have bin getting back into canning I may go to the store for small stuff every 2 months and most times it for stuff I don't need to be eating lol

Hey sometimes some junk food is nice! You had a pretty good garden this year and a nice flock of chickens and turkeys! Get some fishing in as well and you will be set! And oh yeah! Canning is a skill that you must have to live this way! Thank you so much! 🧡🤗💚

Great video. Hope you get to try caribou hunting again. I never think about freezing mushrooms and usually wind up losing some of them. Thanks for the tip on freezing them & eggs!
@AloneinRemoteAlaska2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much Joan for the mushroom booklet and the moisture meter! They will both get used a lot! I plan on using that moisture meter ASAP though! Your so awesome! So caribou season opens up again in about 2-3 weeks? I think? But my bag is ready to go! I hope we at least see caribou next time! When I would buy mushrooms in Colorado, I just used them that same day or next because I would do the same thing! I prefer fresh mushrooms over any preservation method but sautéing them before freezing would be my second favorite. And the water glassing eggs, if put in a sealed jar and kept in a cool dark place, can keep for two years! The crock insert I used will keep for 6-12 months. Just depends on water evaporation. Thank you so much Joan!

i have just recently found your videos while surfing around. my wife and i are moving to the Alaskan interior in January of all times. it wasnt i first choice for a time schedule but it is what we have to work with. moving to a small dry cabin from south texas should be interesting
@AloneinRemoteAlaska2 жыл бұрын
Well Peter, moving to Alaska in January is doable but yeah you definitely want to start your life in Alaska with a bang don't you?🤣 Be over prepared for problems that may come up and just don't let this move (whatever issues you may run into) ruin your view of Alaska. Interesting for sure but you may just coast all the way to Alaska with no issues at all. I have not regretted my move here for one single second! 😉🧡

When you do get that Caribou or even a Moose as well Alone? You are gonna need another freezer for sure! I have learned so much from you in this video about keeping root vegetables, apples, eggs & mushrooms too through the winter. I already pretty much knew how to store potatoes. However Carrots & Beets? Not so much. And yes. The Beet tops are so delicious! Thank You So Much for teaching an old dog new tricks! Sending much love & gratitude your way from Tali girl and me, here on the Pungo Prairie!

Yeah it was three weeks worth and everyone is so nice. Especially with the cost of shipping to Alaska! But Amazon may be free shipping. I had an early Christmas! 🤣🎄 The quilt from my mom still needs to be finished but I love it! Thank you so much Pat! 🧡🤗💚

Yeah I did nothing but research for many years prior to moving out here! But I practiced a lot of it too! this weeks video will be showing most of what my son and I worked on. you might have been able to see some of it behind me in this video. Basically I created a grocery store! So happy you enjoyed the video and I love doing the scenery shots! So always expect them! Ahhh thank you Jim! Your favorite!! That makes me so happy! And I always try to make my videos longer if I can! Seems to be popular so I may try harder! Thank you so much

Wonderful video! I just found out a few weeks ago about dehydrated mushrooms. I have jars and jars of them and rehydrate with water. A national park ranger told me to use white wine instead of water to rehydrate them. I have not tried that yet but wow, I bet that will kick them up a notch.
@AloneinRemoteAlaska2 жыл бұрын
White wine sounds like a great idea!! I am going to try that for sure! I still dehydrate mushrooms but not as much. I'd like to someday get a freeze drier but they are kind of expensive and use a lot of energy so probably will never get one. I like figuring the preserving of food the "old ways". As long as they are safe. 1/8 of a jar of Nutella already gone! I couldn't help myself! Kenai loved the treats too! Thank you so much Brenda! (and hubby)

Beautiful video! I really love your style, your amazing camera work and editing. Nice grocery haul and preservation tips. So sweet you received such nice gifts too...makes me want to send a box for you and Kenai. I see a Caribou or two in your future! Stay safe and warm, blessings and much Aloha from Oregon. ❤❤❤

Hello Barbra! Ahhh thank you kindly for the compliments! I do think and plan out my videos and it is always nice to hear when someone notices! The grocery haul was so much easier with my son helping me out! I wonder if he could fly out twice a year to help me with the grocery hauls 🤭 Yeah probably not. I love preserving food and especially the old style methods! The gifts were about three weeks worth! I almost couldn't find a table big enough to show everything! Remember if you do want to send something, better to wait until next April when I can get to my PO box more regularly and always check the shipping costs! Someone in Alaska sent me a nice gift and it cost him like 17 bucks! IN ALASKA! That's just not right! 1-2 caribou!! I love the way you think! I have two tags and would take two so I could share with the neighbors and my contractor! Oregon is such a beautiful state! Almost moved there! 😉 Thank you so much Barbra! 🧡🤗💚

I will get one more chance for the caribou. Would be nice. I have two tags and would make sure the meat got distributed. My contractor loves caribou. More than moose! I am anxious to try it! Winter has already sucker punched me here! I had to have the driveway plowed already! ALREADY!! 🤪

So happy you enjoyed the video Rhonda! I do always try to make longer videos if I have the footage and time. I am thinking this winter may be easier to make longer videos though. And yeah the poor moose eluded us. Blood trail stopped after about 5 hours. That moose was running through the woods like a ballerina on ice skates. and I do hope to see some caribou when the season opens up again! Thank you so much Rhonda! 🧡🤗💚 Hugs given to Kenai!

HA! I noticed that tree as well! I may have a few hundred of them on my property! Ahhh Deedie that is so sweet! I will say that I still love looking at the awesome paintings you sent and when my contractor was here with his boy, he was wearing the black HH sweatshirt you gave him! I heard that he is really enjoying the sticker books too! the gifts you sent are very much appreciated by me and my contractor! Living this life, your entire spring/summer is just getting ready for winter again and I actually love the hustle and then the calmness after. I knew I had all of this planned (except the hunting part) but I guess I never really thought about the time of doing everything! I look forward to sleeping in some once the snow starts! Are you talking about the black sweater? That was a gift from my son! I love it! Thank you so much Deedie!

LOL! Yeah you are not joking either about 100 bucks and not much to show! For some reason when I do the big grocery hauls, I feel like I got more for my money. Obviously not as there are not discounts but I have spent a chunk of change at the local stores and walked out with 1/2 bag of stuff! CRAZY! At least I was able to get mostly everything I needed. And it was so nice having my sons help on this one! I am SO READY for winter! Thank you so much Angie! 🧡🤗💚
