I was fortunate enough to grow up with a father who learned to play the trumpet at an early age and mastered it through his life. He was in many big bands and played a lot of jazz throughout my preteen years the late 70s. There was nothing like waking up on a Saturday morning and hearing him walk down the hallway playing this song to absolute perfection. Herb Alpert was one of his favorites, along with Maynard Ferguson and Chuck Mangione. At any given time he would switch up between the three artists and play the songs as though he wrote them himself. I grew up thinking everyone's dad was that talented. I'd give anything to go back in time 40 years for just one hour to hear him play....I miss you Dad.

In the San Francisco Bay Area there used to be a local hip hop street scene tv show with a female host in the 80’s. This song was used each week on that show. I never knew the the artist until about 2 years ago and came across it on KZbin. My first listen a few years ago of this song, took me immediately back to those times of youth. Back then, you never know the songs they used on tv or in movies, unless you read the credits at the end. Lol! Such and deep and moving masterpiece!

My dad has an impressive collection of Herb Alpert records dating back to the 1960's, a decade before my time. I grew up listening to them all and I have been a fan since. When my dad had his dinner, or his lunch on a weekend, he would slide into the living room, switch on the record player and stereo, slip on a Herb Alpert and chill on cushions from the sofa on the floor. This was his "do not disturb" sign, but he always let me sit in and enjoy that sweet brass music.

Have loved Herb Albert and his brass since the 60's. I am now, exploring his funk career. I can remember being age six hearing the album, seeing the cover thinking what style! This is my own pre-orchestra days. Herb and Lani's allegiance to the arts, open for the rest of us to partake, will carry into the future changing the lives of many young people. On his sculptures, it takes a certain appreciation for the mind's eye.

Brilliant piece of classic electronic jazz funk. The track Rise may have got all the attention, and not unfairly. But I think Rotation was the better track, and deserved much better than the mid-40s placing it got in the UK chart. Bought it on snazzy clear 12" vinyl on the day of release, in an extended version from the LP. Does anybody else hear the influences I detected from the start? It always sounded to my ears that it had taken several sonic and rhythmic cues from Terry Riley's A Rainbow In Curved Air, and Music For Eighteen Musicians by Steve Reich, while much of the cool, understated, cleanlined funky side owed a lot to the Brazilian band Azymuth. I thought I had the definitive version of Rotation on my 12", which runs about 6½ minutes. But now I hear this, I'm astonished to find an even longer version. However, a quick check on Amazon reveals what you seem to have done here: on the CD issue of the Rise album, there are 2 versions of the track, and you've run them together - the timing would seem to bear this out. Correct? If so... neat idea!!

I wouldn't concider this jazz really. More of a blues groove. It maintains a constant 4/4 time signature where jazz is usually all over the place. 2/4 to 6/8 to Neptune over to Mars, and skip back to earth, and back to 6/8. Mind exhausting. This is just kick-back and groove tunes.

I was a young Marine in the Phillipines in 1980 and I remember a taxi driver in the city took me and my friend all over the city of Manila while we drank in his cab and h had this awesome song on his stereo playing. The memory sticks clear in my head even after 41 years.

Clive Traverse I remember a pal putting this on using and old Dansette record player. Because of this experience i still think there will always be vinyl fans around-great sound and any crackles-so long as they aren’t too intrusive- make it even better. 🎸

Herb Alpert - Rotation: 'alovelytime,' is exactly what you've captured in your music video. I could easily listen to this song over & over again. Listening to it makes me dwell on riding a carousal. The album cover is the first time I've seen this and it's an exquisite art image with Herb Alpert. Real smooth what you've created to share! A big thank you. Trinkett

I have the album Rise which has Rotation on it & I've also got the 12" Clear Vinyl of Rotation.... It still sounds awesome even today. Thanks for sharing ;-)

@@kcsnow9447 LOL I know what you mean there... I lost count of the times I played it over the years. I had the album Rise on Cassette Tape too which snapped in the car tape deck.... Now I'm showing my age LMAO ;-)

Right after my septic guts were successfully removed from my abdomen at Kingston hospital back in March 2022 after nearly 3 attempts to save my life from massive blood loss due to my spleen deciding it was going to end my life yet again... I recovered finally & ended up in intensive care until they finally brought me back to life.... This was here... My beautiful Rotation & the Forever Trumpet of Herb Alpert c UU❤
