at 18:18 there's no reason for him to take damage from the power surge, at least not in a40 league rules. You can pump any amount of mana into a circle of protection as long as there is a red card in play or a red spell being played. Same thing if he had a cop:green (since there are green cards out) but wouldn't work if it was a cop:blue (since there are no blue cards). Since the opponent was tapped out, he should have just tapped his 4 lands for 9 mana and activated the circle 9 times. And even if the opponent wasn't tapped out and he wanted to avoid leaving himself open to his opponent responding with bolts or something, he could just tap one land after untapping to to activate the circle and prevent the damage. If you have a circle of protection: red, someone else playing a power surge is pretty much the best thing that can happen to you. I've won matches because I had a cop:red and someone else's power surge killed them.

Under current rules this works. If playing by ‘93 rules a player couldn’t just dump mana in activating Circles of Protection nor Regeneration abilities. By those rules damage could only be prevented during damage resolution for non-combat damage and only during the damage prevention step for combat damage.

While you can pre-emptively activate COP in new rules, and someone pointed out you couldn't in Alpha rules, there is something that appears to be missed. The wording on Alpha power surge is rough. It makes you take damage not whether lands are tapped at the beginning of each turn, but if you *tapped them* on the previous turn. Meaning, tapping lands on your turn then passing means you take damage for those lands you tapped on your next turn. I wonder if this is played that way in other A40 games. That all said! The damage from the Power Surge, even though it says "1 damage for each land" is a single triggered ability, meaning preventing it for 1 mana is completely accurate.

Awesome video, Timmy! Been a while since I've seen Power Surge get a chance to shine. When they chanced how damage prevention works, it made COPs even better. Nice to see them using the classic rules which limits its use somewhat. In modern magic you can just dump any untap lands into the COP to prevent future damage.

Love the decks! Always cool to see an Alpha Lotus. Technically you can only have 3 Shivans (rares restricted to 3). But still a badass deck and fun gameplay :) You could do 6 Dragon Whelps, though (uncommons restricted to 6).
