Sony FE 35 F1.4 G Master Lens Review
Watch on a large 4K screen to see the quality of the images on display.
This video looks at the technical specifications of the FE 35 F/1.4 G Master but also why a photographer would choose the 35mm prime over a standard zoom lens or an ultra wide-angle prime lens.
This video review will showcase many images captured with the FE 35mm FE/1.4 GM Prime Lens and the settings used to capture them.

What I’ve learned from watching so many photographer’s videos on cameras & lenses, is that most are primarily KZbinrs, not necessarily photographers. You are exactly the opposite. You actually use the gear and not just talk about it. Your explanations for why you choose a particular lens or use a specific F-stop is really insightful and comes from that experience. The images from this 35GM is really impressive and it is going to be an important tool for many. Thanks again for another great video.

Thanks for that feedback - I see myself as primarily a photographer and educator and not a gear reviewer. I have been recommended to watch certain videos that don’t show any photos and I end up scratching my head.

@@AlphaCreativeSkills agreed, these days there are a lot of videos on KZbin where reviewers give their thoughts, opinions of new gear based on fact sheets they found on the internet, without them even having the actual gear in their hands. Loads of rubbish! It’s my life mission to give them a thumbs down whenever I came across such video!

Great captures! I believe the decision between 24 & 35 G Masters depends on how much you want to emphasis surroundings. The 24 is better when you almost equally want to emphasis the surroundings and the subject. And the 35 is better when you prioritise the subject over surroundings.

Another great review and loved your street photography. I wish this lens was available a couple of months ago as I purchased the Sigma f1.2, a beautiful lens but as you note, huge. I wanted a g master and didn’t like the Sony/Zeiss, again for the reasons you’ve mentioned plus the coma issues for someone who does a lot of night Astro photography. Glad to see they’ve retained the focus hold button, too. In time I’ll likely sell the Sigma and move to this lens. Thanks again.

I'm seriously thinking about replacing my SL2/SL2-S with the APO Summicron-SL 35mm with the alpha 1 and 35mm 1.4 GM. I used to shoot the a9ii and a7r iv and moved to Leica for the image quality. I think the new GM lenses are getting close to my Leica glass and the AF of the Sony is worlds better than the SL2/SL2-S.

I swear Mark, every image you take is super brilliant. I could spot a Mark Galer image out of a crowd of many. All such vital information again sir. Thank you so very much for your work, Sony is lucky to have you. They really should consider paying you ! I was all set on the 70-200 GM and then you had me sold on the 100-400, but then I watched your insight on the 135 GM and was leaning towards that, and now I’m thinking I need a 35 GM... I use as many primes as possible and have turned my back on the ‘holy trinity’ of zooms (16-35, 24-70 and 70-200). I still use the telephoto zooms such as the 100-400 GM. I have basically gone back to my roots as I started with a handful of primes back in 1980.

A word of warning, at least to those watching in the UK. When I first watched this video, a lot of the comments on sharpness (e.g. “the eyelashes are absolutely razor sharp”) simply didn’t tie up with what I was seeing on my 27 inch screen. On pressing the settings (cogwheel) button showing in the top RH corner of the video, I found that “Quality” was set at 400p. I reset this to 2160p, and then everything in the video that should have been sharp now was. I then remembered reading that KZbin had agreed to lower default video speeds settings, in order to help maintain broadband capacity to meet the extra demands arising from people working from home.

I have been running with the 35mm f/1.8 (I had zero complaints) but would use the 55 f/1.8 or 85 f/1.8 whenever possible to exploit the shallow depth of field that would come from using a longer focal length. The 35mm Zeiss was just a little too large for street so I was keen to explore this 35mm f/1.4 GM. Working at the demonstration, shooting portraits against the walls and lightening fast subject acquisition at f/1.4 convinced me the GM would be a good permanent lens in my messenger bag for my personal work.

Hi,I have a question, are 35gm have some noise during the first focus when using AF-S but not when using AF-C,is that normal thing?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills Жыл бұрын
With AF-S there is only ever a first focus as when the camera acquires the subject it 'fixes' the focus. This action of fixing the focus so that it does not move again makes a noise. in AF-C the camera never fixes the focus because, as the name suggests, it us always continuous.

My recent personal photography has been on using light portable primes used with compact full frame cameras. Hi Mark, please check the length of the Sigma F1,4 lens. I owned this lens and it was quite a brick. I think it is not shorter than the Sony GM lens. The Sigma Web-Site (Germany) indicates 120mm longitude meanwhile Sigma global shows 111,5mm. However it's longer than the Sony GM with it's 96mm. Take a look at your sheet (video stop at 9'6")

I pulled these specs off the dpreview.com comparison feature, but you are correct in pointing out the fact that Sigma's E-Mount version is even bigger than their DSLR versions of this same lens. It's as if they added the adapter instead of redesigning the lens for Sony's E-Mount.

Thank you very much for the informative video, Mark. I have a question about the sharpness. Is the Sony 35mm f/1.4 GM sharper than my current Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM2? Greetings from Germany.

Most likely ...but I prefer users to look at the ultra high-resolution images on my Flickr Pro account, download the Raw files from my Patreon support channel or check out the MTDF charts from a company such as lens rentals.com who test 10 lenses and take the average. Don't take the comments from one reviewer in this regard - even me.

Most Street Photographers will choose the 35mm as their 'standard' focal length but I am more than happy to use the 50mm and 85mm primes for street.

You are so wrong it’s really not funny. Sometimes the hardest thing for people living on the street is that they feel invisible as people pass and pretend they are not there. I take time to connect and give them what they need to get off the street for a few days so they can also have the opportunity to connect with welfare agencies. I also take a couple of weeks each year to raise money for charities. The photos help raise public awareness to their plight.

Please give me some of your thoughts - I want a small wide angle prime for hiking, traveling and occasional astro (only stills). Currently I have an option of a 24mm GM priced similarly to a new 20mm 1.8. Which one would you recommend? I do have sigmas 35 but it's just too big for the mountains

I would like to buy a not too bulky wide angle lens for night time street photography in cities like Tokyo with small alleys and artificial lights. I already own a 16-35 F4 which serves me well during daytime and in situations where i can use my tripod however F4 has it`s limitations in terms of DOF and low light conditions. I am hesitant if the GM has enough benefits to justify the 3x higher price over the Sony 35mm 1.8. I also have to consider the weight (because of travelling) which is almost double... Any suggestions?
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills 3 жыл бұрын
If you are used to using a lens with an F4 aperture and f/1.8 lens will drop your ISO significantly, e.g. instead of shooting a street scene at f/4 with an of ISO 6,400 you will now find the ISO is 1250 at f/1.8.

Thanks Mark for these awesome samples, and you're using A7C with it! I've been thinking of getting the combo myself, IMO the best bang for the buck for full frame systems from Sony. The pictures simply look razor sharp and sometimes unreal due to its sharpness when viewed in 4K.
@AlphaCreativeSkills
@AlphaCreativeSkills Жыл бұрын
The A7C is an excellent sensor. You can complain about the finder size and resolution but not the dynamic range and high ISO performance of the sensor. If 4K images are the outcome there is no need to crop tightly in post and you are using the Monitor most of the time the camera is great (small, compact and affordable). I hope to see an A7CII in 2023 as the option to shoot more often in APS-C mode using a 33 megapixel sensor would be one reason I would possibly want to trade up.

Great review Mark and it gives me reassurance to see that you’re comfortable using said lens on the A7C body, (my camera 📷 of choice). My question for you is ‘would you feel comfortable using the 50f/1.2 GM on the same body’? Thank you. ✌🏾&💜

The 50mm F/1.2 is a little on the hefty side (feels a little like an 85mm f/1.4) but will still fit comfortably in my small messenger bag with two other primes. I use the 2.8/135 Batis with the A7C (in preference to the heavier 135 f/1.8 GM) so the 50 1.2 is not dissimilar in size to the Batis. I figure if I am prepared to work with the Batis on the A7C then the 50 1.2 will be no different. It is usually my left hand supporting the weight of the combined camera lens so the package still feels manageable (at the upper reaches I what a compact system should be).

@@AlphaCreativeSkills Thank you Mark, that’s very helpful indeed and thanks for taking the time to answer my question personally and so quickly. I’ve been trying to downsize all my gear to the bare minimum of what I actually need. So that has involved me selling a bunch of stuff over the last year. I’m primarily a Leica M user but my eyes aren’t what they used to be for RF work plus I really feel that, that technology has finally run it’s course in todays world of EVF’s and focus peaking. I’ve had the A1 a couple of times and while I honestly believe it’s the worlds most advanced and in some ways …best photographic tool, the A7C with its RF-like footprint really appeals to me. I will probably end up with an A1 again once I can emotionally detach from the photographic tool having to look like a classic camera 📷 but until then the A7C will suffice nicely. I really feel it’s an exceptional tool. Very much underrated. Btw my name is Seal (as in the musician). I did some work in your country a few years back on a tv show called ‘The Voice’. I had a great time filled with amazing memories. ✌🏾&💜

Hi, Does Sony 35mm F1.4 G Master Lens better in Sharpness, low in distortion, low in vignetting, low in chromatic aberration, low in flare resistance, better in LoCA correction, better extreme corner sharpness stopped down (astigmatism), better in sun stars than Sony 24mm F1.4 G Master ??

I am not sure of the value of comparing two lenses of very different focal lengths but Lens Rentals provide MTF charts for all Sony Primes (I provided a link in the video) so you will be able to see which has the best optical performance when Lens Rentals release the MTF charts for this new 35mm GM. If you are going by Sony's own MTF charts, then on paper the 35 GM will be better optically than the 24 GM. Personally I don't need a chart as I am happy to just zoom in to 100% on my 32inch 4K monitor.

It will depend on the shoot I have planned. The 35mm ZA tended to get taken everywhere because it was small enough to be a 'just-in-case' lens and great for Street when stopping down was the way to go (it's small and discreet). My personal style for Street and Journalism/Editorial has been changing over the years and I have been favouring shooting wide open rather than shooting with the 'Sunny 16' or 'f/8 and be there' rules - which are the more traditional approaches to Street.
