(Just my opinion) I feel like the 2021-2022 products are great but there’s so much products and nonstop releases that people are tapping out because there’s just way too much and wallets are running dry. I believe double masters 2022 will overshadow all other products this year similar to modern horizons 2 and will even choke out Dominaria especially because now we’re getting jumpstart boosters each set moving forward ever further diluting the market. Personally after double masters, I’m planning on taking a step back saving for more important investments.

I think sealed is still alive and can still come back. The biggest issue right now is the saturation from Wizards. My first, full-time set was Odyssey in 2001. From there, I kept up with Magic until the Time Spiral set in 2006. Back then, you had 1 set every 3 to 4 months being released, with a prerelease for the set about a month from the full release. That was a perfect setup as you had time to enjoy the set and fully appreciate it before something else was released. Even then, you could still enjoy mixing and matching your decks for different formats (Standard and homebrew were the top two when I played) with cards from the same block that actually had a long, and rich story to the cards (yes, I am Magic lore nerd and have a good number of the novels that came with the release bundles). I stopped after that and recently came back to Magic late last year and couldn't believe the number of sets that are now being pushed out. A least one per month. That is just too much to keep up with and really takes away from having time to enjoy the product. And that is the key for the 2nd issue: ENJOYING THE PRODUCT. Sealed offers the enjoyment aspect of Magic when players are willing to step back and give something older a shot for whatever reason and actually look at the cards more closely than they did before. You can't enjoy something when you have 1 week to take everything in, on top of everything outside your MTG time, then get ready for a new set right around the corner. Don't get me wrong, seeing what Wizards is coming up with to add to the game is always fun. I never imagined they would actually start finally adding dinosaurs, pirates, classic monster themes, etc. into the game as full blocks. They even went and added ancient cultures from all around the world and it just makes everything more interesting in the possibilities. And to top all of that, they are now adding things like Warhammer (never got into this), D&D (there are only 2 sets added at the moment but there is still material to draw inspiration from, I am personally waiting on the Warforged from Ebberon), I think they are even working on Street Fighter and Lord of the Rings releases of all things. There is literally nothing they can stop at, they just need to slow down and let us enjoy everything before adding more stuff. As stated earlier, I started out with the Odessey set being my first, full-time set but I always came back to the cards my friends donated to me from their excess of older cards because I got the chance to ENJOY the cards, enjoy the game. But players have to be willing to hold off on buying the latest/greatest/best when they come out though, so this is going to be a tough issue to solve unless Wizards forces things by slowing down. Sorry for the rant, but this has been building for a while inside my head. Thank you for listening.

I can point out 2 concrete reasons as to why the last 18 months of sales is shit! 1. FATIGUE…. A new launch every month is ridiculous! 2. PRICE…. The rising prices combined with the amount of new product! I used to buy multiple cases during Launch weekend for new sets and 4-5 weeks later pick up another case, now I get a single booster box and a couple collectors boxes and that’s it for the entire set because by the time I’m ready to buy again a new set is out!

Baldur's Gate is a heck of a set and I have thoughts. But to understand why the market rejected it so hard I'll just say these 4 things: 1) Lots of D&D players out there, but Baldur's Gate is ONE city in ONE region of ONE campaign setting. 2) The set is only legal in EDH and what, Legacy? Vintage? Nothing AFAIK in this set is even remotely playable in Eternal formats. Without powerful reprints, it has a limited audience. 3) This is the first set AFAIK to be hit with "shrinkflation". 18 packs in a set box? For the same price (so more per pack). Ripoff city. 4) Burnout. The rollout of Baldur's Gate was delayed by a week in my area, and 2X2 previews had started before I got my product. There's just TOO MUCH PRODUCT, something has to give, and what's going to fail is the niche products like this one. I honestly think it's an opportunity though. What was it, SCG had draft boxes for $75. That's a steal. It's a fantastic draft environment, on par with Conspiracy or Battlebond, and does have enough unique cards that, 5 years down the line, you can bet it will be a $200 box (especially if inflation keeps up, lol)

The whole time Rudy has been on KZbin I have said the same thing... overall, sealed will go up, just very slowly. They are great stable investments for people ready to retire or need stability in their portfolio, like bonds. You will have a couple home runs that go way up in a few months and a couple strikeouts that will take 7-8 years, but average 6%-10% growth a year. However, it is a better bet to collect 93/94/Reserved List graded or raw. Always remember, Rudy will buy and sell sealed all day, but he will not sell his Alpha PSA 10's. As long as you are not retiring and you don't have a very risky portfolio, you buy stocks... not bonds. We all see marketplaces and craigslist type local fire sales for cheap MTG sealed where people are trying to get out of their sealed positions. You almost never see anyone fire selling their 93/94/Reserved List graded or raw singles. Plus, for every booster box you have to find storage for you could be storing 360 singles or 20+ slabs in the same amount of space. Yet another plus, you can almost always get your money back (or more) if you need/want to sell a 93/94/Reserve List graded or raw. Compared to selling sealed shortly after buying it - especially if you have to pay for shipping... you will lose money most of the time. In conclusion, 93/94/Reserve List graded or raw singles sell for a profit faster, have a better return, are easier to liquidate, take up less space, and you can actually play with them (if raw) without losing any value. I buy multiple boxes of each new set, but that is to draft with friends or have fun opening set or collector boosters. I know a lot of Rudy followers are not MTG players, so it makes sense why you would want sealed to hold, because you don't play and still want a stable return. For an investment though, I go with the higher return.

@@belikartu6532 a case is more expensive than a PSA 10 Alpha common. There are a ton of 93/94/Reserved List highly graded cards that go for $100-$200. Alpha Earthbind raw was going for $30-$50 last year and now go for $100+. Tons of cards like that if you are actually interested.

Sealed is just a far more conservative investment (like a bond) and much harder to move (physically and profit wise). Not sure why the comment if you won’t consider a better investment - old or new shouldn’t matter, as the markets for both are plentiful. Just one requires knowledge and the other requires more work for less of a return.

I've compared this era in particular with the 2008-2011 era. We had slam-dunk homerun sets during a market that didn't want to eat them up. Prints wound up short because demand was so low. Uhh. What were those sets again? Lorwyn, Shadowmoor, Eventide, Time Spiral, Planar Chaos, Future Sight...all the way up to Scars of Mirrodin? This was the golden era. These boxes were an easy 500%+ ROI. B-but. If they were so good. Then. Why didn't more people buy? Because they simply couldn't. Buy-ups during recessions are real. Cash is king on the way down.

Here's my microwave it in tinfoil hats take on why sets like HOD do well after a couple years: I think that there's either a natural, contrived (or both) situation where later card sets generate interactions with cards that make them more desirable. In some cases this can apply to an entire mechanic from a set and bring up the value of multiple cards from it. Is it possible that WotC designs ahead for this? But how would making out-of-print sets better down the road by making cards that make them better? Well, one thought would be if WotC takes the under-sold sets and uses future card design to make one or more cards from them desirable, it opens the door for future premium sets or secret lairs to use those now desirable cards to get a much higher margin of profit from those sales because the original printings are low/hard to get now. I imagine that both is the answer, that natural shifts in the meta of various formats make cards from "bad" sets good, as well as WotC having a reason to design cards in later sets that create chase cards from "bad" sets that they can then use in premium products as reprints.

You are so right. I am in this market from the early beginning on. We had all that time up and downs. For example the series I remember homeland, falling empires and unglued. This boxes where sold for ten dollars a box. Or look what happened when yugioh left from upperdeck, the boxes where sold for under 20 dollars, blue eyes, magic rulers, metal riders, Pharaos servent and do not forget Pokémon was also blown our for pennies. I remember on box prices for under ten dollars skyridge, team rocket, Dschungel and so on. We have now the situation, too many people came into the business for the last two years. They have seen the sun in the beginning but they never learned to handle an umbrella if the rain falls down. The expectation was to big for the market and the producer as well has made their masses of product for the dealers but not for the customers. The customers now are overfeeded and the qtyty of dealers are going back. About the preorder terms many new dealer tries to stay in business by selling their pre-orders fast, that almost drops the prices under break even. I think the market will be cleared in short time but for this the players must be clever and hold the market shorter on their products.

It’s interesting how Rudy over-amplifies the negativity in order to preemptively sunshine-pump, but the reality of the situation is more simple: WOTC made Throne of Eldraine, realized they fucked up and openly stated they would be powering down the next sets in line. The result was a somewhat underwhelming strixhaven, adventures, and Innistrad sets. The sets aren’t exactly disasters, but it is no surprise that it will take them a while to appreciate. Now CL2 comes out and is a far cry from the splashy value of CL1 combined with the similarities to negative aspects of the adventures set and it makes sense people are cold on it. It’s almost like Rudy forgot Neon Dynasty exists because he can’t shoehorn it into his doom and gloom narrative of the public perception. WOTC intentionally rebounded the power level from the Innistrad sets for Neon Dynasty and it was a huge success. Personally I think New Cappena is a little slept on and could become a “cult” classic in a few years. But here’s the main thing, everything discussed here is reactionary as fuck. Nearly all these “disaster” sets are still in print, hell they are even printing MH2 again as it is one of the greatest sets of all time (again not mentioned here). As WOTC pushes more and more product, there will naturally be value cannibalization and the weaker products will suffer more. Will the recoup in the long run? Likely, or at least some will, but we are in somewhat uncharted territory here with the ever increasing product variations and variants within the products, so time will tell…. But people are still collecting sealed and it’s still not a bad idea, don’t buy into the hype in either direction even if it makes for good content for Rudy.

I really like the DnD cards but the AFR set was obviously designed for magic arena, with all the different counters and meta concepts that need kept track of it would be a nightmare to play in the flesh and blood with physical cards. For the record I think the black and white monster manual style art looks really good.

The positive correlation between the stock/crypto market and investing in sealed MTG products is very high. Most investors transfer gains from stock/crypto market to physical investment assets like MTG. Whenever the markets pick again this flow will re-start and older sealed products with higher EV will raise in price. When? Who knows, not my nose

Agree on some sealed products being too early to tell. I went hard since 2019 on toy collectibles and same thing 90% stayed the same and still the same retail price. Others took a year or 2 to appreciate which IS SUPPOSED TO BE NORMAL! So no I don’t see anything wrong in the market jus my new investors not understanding you must take the Norris fist many times till he leaves you alone

It’s just impossible to evaluate these sets because literally a week after they release, it’s spoiler season for the next set That’s why I like Flesh and Blood, slower set release schedule makes every set feel exciting and meaningful

Human perception is based on contrast. A slow boil kills without notice, well kaladesh had record standard bans Hot and amonkhet had scarab god thats it for power Ice cold. Great investments can be made with an accurate gauge of the contrast in the narrative context. The quality of baulders gate compared to its pullrates is new territory that combind with the power of the mythics makes baulders gate prime imo.

I think this past year has had great draft experiences, and I've loved the themes. Unfortunately, their overall contribution to the non-rotating pool has been lacking. I enjoy them far more in isolation than as a part of a larger story. I'm sure prices will eventually rebound, because if people don't buy the set and it doesn't get reprinted as much, and some people hoard boxes, prices will go up, and out of print always goes up eventually anyways. I think the problem is that people think too much in the now, emotionally, as you always caution against. I also think the truth is somewhere in the middle: the sets were fun, but not great. They'll go up in value because the initial lack of interest makes for a self fulfilling prophecy. I'm not worried about sealed product or long term, I'm frustrated as a player where they pump out sets like Eldraine that break even VINTAGE and then drop the power level to compensate. Too many bannings, too much swing. I want to see a more balanced flow as a player, and I want to have more value as a player. My concerns are not as an investor. If I were just buying sealed boxes and sitting on them, I'd just roll my eyes and keep on buying. It just sucks being a player and having perpetual hype and too many products that get more and more expensive, without getting as many cards for formats I want to play. I'm not upset that WotC wants to profit since it's a business, and I don't have anything against the MTG finance aspect. On the other hand, the benefit of the finance aspect for non-investors is being able to cash out when they're done and not lose a ton of value, and that has absolutely been an issue. I want to crack packs for fun without feeling like I'm losing 80% of the value for such a pleasure. Singles are insanely cheap which is great if you're just buying that, but opening product is just asking for trouble. I just want to see a balance where as a player I can enjoy the game without being overwhelmed or feeling like I'm being cheated. Wish WotC gave a crap.
