Polybian Legion Defends Against 2000+ Barbarians - Mount and Blade II Bannerlord

Salve Citizens,
Today we pit these hard men in fresh new legionary drip against some stinky, dirty and uncivilized barbarian swine, also known as Battanians. More specifically, around 2000 of them. Fortunately, it didn't come to down to the Triarii.
These dudes are, you guessed it, also remade for my WIP mod so yours wont look the same if you see them in game.

Cool battle, well done! The only issue I have is with your use of equites. They're no cataphracts that can just charge right into the enemy's front to break it. Instead, they support the heavy infantry doing the main work and protect the flanks. Keep in mind that they're noble patricians, so a Roman commander wouldn't throw them against enemies at the start of a battle.

But my man did a full pre-republic to pre- imperial tactics with the triari, principes and hastati formations and uses it well. Ain't no cataphracts in that time. It was just weakly armored spear bois on horses. Imagine a MB game in the ancient days oooofffff

@@BaconNationChannel If you read my comment carefully you'll realize that this was my issue: Horsemen weren't heavily armored knights nor did Rome have a rich history of cavalry in that time. So charging them in like he did was nor historical nor effective.

from what ive learned from playing this game, real basic tactics work well until it comes to melee then the battles devolve into annoying blobs where numbers and unit tiers tend to determine the outcome. im hoping the battle system gets re worked. and dont get me started on cavalry....

nice video. i saw that you switched your front infantry line in the middle of the match and i saw your green bar growing a bit... does that mean you gave your soldiers a break by pulling them in the second line and they recovered?

Thanks, glad you like it! Yeah sort of. I'm not sure how familiar you are with the roman tactics of the polybian period but basically you had your infantry arrayed in order of strength, with the weakest in the front, your medium guys in the middle and strongest in the back. So much like it's speculated was done in real life, when the front line gets overwhelmed, the second line of heavier, better troops steps in to allow the first line to either pull out entirely or reorganize. That's my long-winded way of saying yes, you're basically right.

the green bar didn't seem to change. If it did, it was because of reinforcements coming into the battle; it doesn't take into account their position or activity as far as I've seen.

@@AlphaOmegaMan thats actually very correct. They would support and let troops reorganize or retreat if taking heavy casualties. A cool thing to note is that Roman soldiers in the frontline would switch to the back after a while of fighting. They held each others belts and pulled them back, went back to the line and rested. It was a near perfect warmachine actually, it just devoured enemy troops. THey switched first rows (centurion blew a wistle, rest for about 15min) and they could switch cohorts too (Hastati, principes and triarii).

Order them into square or hold a position in loose formation. Byzantine archers were a quarter of the infantry so a good set up w companion parties in a historically based army to start is 180 legionaries (20 menavliaton) 50 archers, 50 elite cataphracts per flank, 50 bucellari. Lead one flank to attack the right rear, and dismount to fight in the ground ranks once your cav dies like all the Roman civil war generals

Just add bandons (byzantine for banners) of each type as you want from vets stockpiled in fiefs. I prefer more infantry but you can RP an elite unit like Scholar, or supplement w other vassals which was very byzantine in its mixing up of available manpower anyway. Still a new butterlord here.

Yeah since this is taking place inside the Enhanced Battle Tester there's thousands of guys just trickling in as per the battle size limit in perceived waves but really they're just coming at me at will.

1:00 - I hate the way the horses just wade straight through rank and file set of infantry. Most of those troops would be eating dirt from a charge like that. It also allows you to do some pretty janky tactics against the AI like sandwiching (charging horses through infantry and back again), which would never happen in real life.
