To get a little nerdy here: People fall for fake smash balls because of several shortcutting techniques the brain uses to process data quicker. This is especially true with honed reflexes, as they skip even more stuff in order to focus purely on reaction time. A player is focusing primarily on their opponent, with outer focus on the stage and the items spawning in it. They see that rainbow colored flash and instinctively go for it, while still mostly focusing on their opponent so they don’t get wrecked while chasing it. They’re too focused on other things, so the brain just sees the ball shape and rainbow flash and fills in the rest with “oh. It’s a smash ball.” Which relays to the instinct-driven player: “HOLY MOTHER OF TITS ITS A SMASH BALL, GET THAT SUCKER AND MASH B” Thus, a fake ball would actually get players like this more than some random person who plays the game casually. They’re less laser-focused, less instinct driven, and more used to seeing stuff like fake balls and other deadly items. This has been your dorkiness for the video, you’re welcome.
