I have a Dainese D-Air Smart Jacket (vest) which has been barely used and sitting with the retailer for months waiting for a replacement from Dainese in my XS size (to fit under my Dainese leather jacket). There are plastic holders which house the canisters velcroed to the inside of the jacket, but the velcro patches easily peel off from the plastic that the adhesive backing side sticks to. Even replacement velcro patches from the supplier just does not stick onto the plastic canister holders. I believe these velcro patches don't restrict the operation of the vest, but... coming from a reputable company bragging about the tech and experience in creating the vest, it's disconcerting to know that they have loose fixings inside the jacket as if they were cheap no-name Chinese parts! You'd think with all their tech and experience that these velcro patches - while not necessarily a life saving component - have been attached for a reason and not randomly, but they just peel off! My retailer just got these Alpinestars vest in and suggesting I could try them on instead

@twistedsocal4 жыл бұрын
@@jameslamon6947 you mean the race jacket? The street can't be flashed to race but the race can be flashed to street. The nice thing about this jacket and why I kinda wish it had come out 8 months ago is that it is only 600 bucks. My leather jacket that is just techair compatible cost me 550. Then throw another roughly 1300 after tax on the airbag and I'm rolling around with a very heavy and very very warm due to not breathing for shit cause of the airbag style jacket. I love it but it's so fucking sweat inducing and I got a vented version. As soon as the airbag is in, it's super snug and kills a ton of mobility and kills most all airflow but the piece of mind is next to impossible to put a price tag on so I deal with it. If you go track or really that's the only reason I think u might want to not get this thing, if you don't plan on track riding this thing looks hands down better in every way

This year I had my first accident on the street in over a decade of riding, and while I was able to limp away from that one, it's caused me to rethink my gear solutions. While I've determined this is probably the best street solution, some reviews have given me pause. The main gripe I keep hearing is the poor customer service from Alpinestars when it comes to after-sales service/support. Specifically communication and help troubleshooting or replacing defective units. I don't want to bash Alpinestars (Hell, 90% of my gear is A*) But at this level of investment on a system where you'll eventually need to deal with customer service at some point, you'd hope for better. That being said, I have no such concerns with Van and STG. I'd be much more confident buying from you guys considering your knowledge and experience with the system, and the fact that you have a direct line to Alpinestars in the event of a bigger issue.

If you live in hot climate you will sweat a lot on this vest , I do recommend mesh jacket . Alpinestars do not advice to do any wheeles or any sort of stunt when wearing this vest . What they want you to know is they are not taking any responsibility for what is going to happen when you crash they do not guarantee anything.

If your jacket isn’t big enough or doesn’t have the requisite stretch panels (down the sides and on the shoulders), I believe the deployment would rupture the seams or maybe the actual airbag. Sort of like “the Hulk” after he transforms. That’s because the gas releases at over 1.2bar and that’s over the burst pressure of most garment seams. I’m very interested in 2 of these, for my wife and I, but right now I’m in a country where nobody wants to ship to. I’ll have to wait until I’m back in Europe :(

Great video! I bought one recently and find it very comfortable. A nitpick is that the flap closes too easily when on a dress hanger activating the system inadvertently. Otherwise, the design and engineering are amazing. I do have two questions: when the bladder over the shoulder inflates, does it provide some neck protection by limiting the movement of the helmet? Does it have to get serviced when it gets wet after getting caught in the rain? Thanks!!
@sportbiketrackgear4 жыл бұрын
The vest is designed to be waterproof for the most part. I would try to avoid riding in excessively long down pours that would result in getting the vest soaking wet. To protect the collarbone the vest inflates over the shoulders to prevent the helmet from making contact during a crash. This will limit the range of motion and also protect your neck in a crash. - Van

Questions here for you Van: I have to say, your review of this product is the best I’ve seen! I just ordered the Tuono Jacket but I’m so close to just buying this instead. As it offers more protection it seems. The one thing I don’t understand is why Dainese didn’t include shoulders when designing the airbag system for the Tuono Jacket?? I never owned one of these jackets so I don’t know if it already has good enough protection. Has anyone thought of stacking this with the Dair for double the protect? Probably overkill but just curious if it would work? Other option is to buy the Dainese Super Speed3 jacket and use the Tech Air5 underneath it. -Thanks

I just wanted to ask a bit more about track versus street use. I know that this is not intended for track use but find it really frustrating that for people ride the occasional track day you end up almost being forced to buy two airbag products. From my understanding the main difference between the tech air street vs race is that the street gets deployed under a lower speed and it deploys two canisters i.e. the risks of wearing this product on the track is that it goes off on a low speed crash and you can only have one crash. I can't think of a scenario where the street version is less likely to deploy than the race version. So if we go back to the tech air 5, lets just for argument sake say i had a two piece alpinestars missile leather suit and wore that to the track with the tech air 5. Regardless of what alpinestars recommend I just can't understand how that would be less safe than having no airbag but having a normal back protector?
@sportbiketrackgear4 жыл бұрын
If you want to do both track and street with one product then you need the Tech Air Race Vest. With the this vest you can switch from track to street mode so the vest is able to protect the ride in either environment. In street mode the Tech Air Race will use both canisters and only be able to deploy one time. It only takes a minute to switch modes. - Van
@roycross86674 жыл бұрын
@@sportbiketrackgearHi Van, appreciate your response and I do really like your reviews so not taking a dig at you, but this still doesn't answer the question or solve the problem. If I want to use the Tech Air Race Vest on the road and do any sort of touring or commuting I then have to buy another jacket from alpinestars as well any get rid of perfectly good gear that I already have. The mere fact that the Race vest can be configured to work on the street shows that it could be done the other way around (it is a software issue). But even if it wasn't done that way, the simple question is whether the tech air 5 would offer better protection on race track versus a standard back protector which is what I am wearing right now? If I have to choose between spending more money on an air vest for the street versus the track I wold choose the street every day of the week as I think it is far more dangerous. I know its not something you probably can answer but I just can't understand why they couldn't have pitched this product for track users as well, yes its not going to be as good as the Tech Air Race but it has to be better than the alternative, which is standard body armor. Sorry this is just me having a gripe, keep up the good work.

Hopefully not anytime soon :-) Btw I've find out, that at this point, I'm able to connect to vest only if it is charging from wall.

Thanks for the great review. Is there a possibility that the tech air 5 vest deploys without force? I mean without having an accident? The same I would ask the smart jacket from Dainese.

Really informative, thanks. So, I just went out and bought the techair 5...in the UK if you shop around you can get one for about £500 (British Pounds). I wonder if you find the charging attachment a bit fiddly and also I wonder how long the magnets will last in the zip...again, I find the bottom clasp a bit fiddly, but that may be due my age. Thanks again, I've been looking for one of these for a while. I find it very comfortable and so light, just not aware that I am wearing it.

Hi, this is maybe the best explanation video I found, really thank you for that! One question; with a tech-air compatible jacket, do you still need all that space for the deployment, or because of the stretch panels, the jacket can fit a bit slimmer?

While I would not recommend going swimming with this on it is waterproof. As for the back pack it will not have any affect on the protection. You would just need to make sure the straps on the pack would allow for the bag to deploy. - Van

great detailed review - I’m Interested what you d recommend. Im a road rider primary who may take his Streetfighter once or twice to track per year. The risk for me is weighted to my road riding. Higher consequence. So the tech air 5 is what I’m thinking. Thanks for the great video. Does the alpinestars jacket have enough stretch panels to wear this underneath. I saw on another video in your full suit your suit was very tight. As long as it has stretch panels will it be ok. Also do you know if there are many false deployments. Thanks in advance
@sportbiketrackgear3 жыл бұрын
I have not heard of a large number of false deployments but have have "heard" of a couple. We have a lot of experience with this product in person and can only confirm one deployment without a crash on track. Every jacket is a little different. If the jacket you want to wear has a large amount of stretch panels it can be a tighter and still worn with the vest. The jacket we show in this video has a little less stretch and needed to fit a little looser to allow or the deployment. This should be a pretty decent visual of what a jacket without a lot of stretch needs to fit like to use the Tech Air 5 Vest. - Van

Van - just bought from you. Nice review man. Been hunting for someone to finally make a vest for street and track use and the race algorithm recently incorporated in this sealed the deal. I was on the fence for Large or XL. Order was for XL and think I need to go with a Large. Im only 5'7" but beefy guy since I weight train. Im broader in the shoulders. 185 lbs and 43/44" chest. Don't own any Alpinestars attire. I have all Dainese attire which I wear a 54 Euro for street gear and track suit. I emailed you guys back to change the size to a Large. Looks like you have same chest size but your also alot taller than me. Trying to avoid having to ship this back to swap sizes if I can avoid. Alpinestars sizing shows Large to be too tight for chest but you fit in the Large fine and have a 44" chest I read?.

Great Review, Quick Question, how great does this airbag protects the neck, others inmobilize the neck and this one i dont see it going so far up, maybe with helmet it could easier to see.
@sportbiketrackgear4 жыл бұрын
The airbag comes up far enough to prevent the helmet from contacting the collarbone. This limits how far your neck can flex, keeping it within it's range of motion. Also important to note neck injuries are not very common in street or track crashes as they are in off road crashes. - Van

Hey Brian, Thanks for another cracking vid- just one question thats a little strange: Ive been losing weight for awhile now, and after losing 10 stone im finally able to get in a race suit and on a sport bike (my dream) - however its been really expensive having to buy gear every few months, so I tend to buy small so that Over the course of moving through the size as i lose weight, its not too snug one end or too loose the other So my current jacket is pretty tight, I ended up going up a size- however Im wanting an airbag vest to go underneath. The suit being new and still got a couple of lbs to with my weight loss, its still a little tight, but not *too* bad when shoulder and back protector are out. Question here really, is if I were to wear one of these under a snug suit, would it hinder the effectiveness of the protection, or will it injure me in any way whilst deploying? I.e. I’ve had broken ribs and lung damage in the past from a previous accident and not sure if it will affect me Or will the perf and stretch panels take care of most of it - I know its hard for you to say without seeing anything so maybe I can shoot you some pictures across? Cheers John
@sportbiketrackgear3 жыл бұрын
John, If the suit or jacket has enough stretch panels to allow for a deployment you will be good to go. End of the day the airbag has to have somewhere to go if it deploys. If there is not enough room it could damage the garment etc... Personally I do not feel it would injure the rider but I could not swear to that. - Van

Hi Firstly great videos .. I have always bought dainese as I believed they were the best fit on the market.. after watching your videos I went for it and bought an alpinestar tec air v2 suit fits perfectly size EU 56.. on your recommendation and fits perfectly so thank you as I am Normally a 58 in dainese so big thumbs up👍.. the build quality is amazing the fit I would say it nicer than dainese also.. I love the bright colours.. I bought the black/grey Florence yellow.. and think it looks cool.. so my question I was under the impression the tec air 5 airbag zips into the v2 suit? .. using the yellow zips!! But I cant seem to see how even after looking at the booklet.. also do you know if this suit needs updating straight out of the box or is that done before alpinestar let these leave the factory? .. so being the air 5 is that for street only?? Which is what I wanted as I know the previous model you can change.. I have not see any videos of the air 5 bag being fitted to a suit yet.. You feedback would be appreciated..

Love the reviews, this one is great. A few questions. 1. For someone that doesn't have an existing tech air for the track, why would this be a bad choice over a conventional back protector on the track? 2. I have heard that a competitor's airbag vest/jacket will not deploy if the rider is on an electric motorcycle as the sensors don't pick up engine vibration during the ride, therefore do not deploy in a crash. Does the Alpine have the same limitations?
@sportbiketrackgear4 жыл бұрын
1. Per Alpinestars this is not designed to be worn on the track. The issue is the algorithm is designed to work with a street crash. Race track crashes can be very different and there is a chance the airbag's deployment could be affected in some way. (End of the day people do what people do and I bet someone will use this on track) 2. No reason this wont work on an electric bike. The minimum speed is 10mph but it will still deploy in a rear end situation as the acceleration is very abrupt. - Van

I’m trying to figure out how much neck is supported but nobody is deploying these with helmets on for some reason so I’m assuming there is no neck support or minimal?
@sportbiketrackgearАй бұрын
The airbag goes over the top of the shoulders to prevent the helmet from coming in contact with the collarbone in a crash. The most common injury in race track crashes is a broken collarbone when the helmet makes contact with it in a crash. This airbag provides all of the coverage you need in that area to prevent that from happening. You do not need anymore coverage around the neck than that IMO. - Van

Excellent video! Thanks for taking the time to educate viewers about what this tech offers in ways of protection. I do have a question though. Can't remember where, but I did see another video about this system and one thing they mentioned is that it can get rather hot wearing it as it supposedly doesn't flow air too well. I suppose if I wear it under a mesh jacket it would be fine but under a leather or textile jacket it could become unbearable here (summer temps average 95-100* with high humidity). Have you tried this out on an actual ride to see just how comfortable it is? Not much worried about fit as that can be tailored by using the size chart but more so comfort as far as heat. Thanks and keep up the great work. Really appreciate all the videos and tutorials you put out!

It is another layer so it will for sure be warmer than the jacket alone. We wear these under our race suits (Tech Air Race version) and can tell you the difference in temp is not too bad once you are moving. The airflow makes a huge difference. - Van
