Exactly! Even why I love watching different reactors. They are only allowed on YT to show 10 minutes of any episode per video commentary under the legal premise of Fair Use for educational commentary. It's interesting to see which clips they select to base their reactions upon and their PoV, bringing their life experience that's shaping their perspective. Every voice matters which is one of the most important reasons why the Net exists.

I always took by the way that Daciana talked to Claudia that she was saying "That's a pretty dream kid, but It's been too long and it became too much to me" with so many more words. There's a hint of it when she says her children will join them, cuz you know... what children? They're all dead to the last one of them. Who knows how many more children she has lost over time? How many lovers and how many friends? It's too much grief to move away and try for a new life in America, in a world where there's nothing of herself anymore.

In the books there's a crazy old "vampire queen" who throws herself into the fire, but comes back to life much later all healed up and pretty. They probably won't do that in the show, but it would be neat to see Daciana again

Absolutely how I read it, plus I also thought - she was so desperate to make more vampires, maybe she thought she was all that was left so meeting Louis and Claudia released her from this pressure to keep the existence of vampires alive, she could finally give up.

1:06:14 I always interpreted it as Louis being relieved that Claudia is unreliable narrator too. Not everything in her diaries is how it actually happened. It's still only her perspective and her emotions at the moment. He said that her diaries are basically documentation of how he failed as a father. So now that he knows that she's also an unreliable narrator, maybe things weren't as bad or more that she didn't hate him as much. Because i think Louis believes that Claudia felt whole bunch of negative emotions towards him (since she said that all 4 of them were bastards). But now he has proof that what she says sometimes can be exaggerated highs of teenage emotions. (Sorry English isn't my first language, hope this mess makes sense)
@maevem316
@maevem316 3 ай бұрын
Especially considering the diaries have been all he's had left of her for so long, and are probably filled with her resentment towards him that she couldn't exactly vent to him about. The idea that there are things she didn't put in there has to be such a relief... I had never considered this...

1:06:09 Real talk… I think the thing is that most people notice Sam’s acting more because Lestat is such a Loud character. There is so much to work with. Lestat FEELS so much and he is so outwardly expressive. And Sam embodies that so well. Louis on the other hand is so reserved. He isn’t as physical. Jacob really embodies this so well too. How he quietly hold himself, and then in moments of peak emotion moves, erratically, kind of spindly like a spider a little bit. Idk but all of the actors on this show are eating dude. And then Louis is a much more down to earth character but then he gets those monologues where Jacob just knocks it out of the park. Both Season premier episodes end with Jacob giving us some of the best scenes of the whole show (the confession/church scene lives rent free in my mind always!) 🌻

I was skeptical about the newer actress for Claudia as well but she is such a breath of fresh air. I feel like Delainey brought a more mature and steady vibe to an older Claudia that fit so well. And Bailey really captured the more childlike and impulsive and uprooted aspect of younger Claudia. This casting team know what they're doing!!

I only hope it continues to hold true that the casting directors or such (and the scriptwriters/directors/actors/etcetera) know what they're doing just as well for all the characters still yet to be revealed in the tv series too!!!!! It would be a shame for them to have done so well at the start only to miss the mark later on-I hope they realize that all the future characters are just as important to get right as these earlier characters, too! (I'm so excited but nervous for Season 3 and onward-some of my personal favorites have yet to appear, and I'm just hoping I'll still like them all every bit as well as I still like the ones that have appeared so far. 😊😅😁💖)

1:16:06 Daciana was basically talking out a fantasy to Claudia but she felt she was done. All her children were gone, she couldn’t make more in the area where she has been for centuries, and once she tastes Claudia’s blood…she felt a chasm between her nature & the nature of these 2 newer vamps with purer blood.

Love love your commentary as always and loved the discussion on consent and victim blaming at the beginning! Very much needed and I agree with everything. Honestly when it comes to the victim blaming and general lack of centering Louis and Claudia from the fandom, I have a LOT of thoughts (and some of it is definitely because of Anti-blackness), but I don’t have the words or energy to get into that. I love all the characters in this show flaws and all, I LIVE for the gothic horror, the toxicity and the drama and I think this is fabulous storytelling. But a spades and spade and we gotta address the problems when we see it, vampires or not LMAO I’m glad you are strong enough in your morals to stand on your business and also enjoy the show for what it is. Doing both is very much possible and should be the norm. Season 2 is a MINDFUCK. What a journey this is gonna be…just wow, I’m so excited. Delainey is amazing as Claudia (she only had like 4 days to prepare for the role) and Assad Zaman gets to finally step out of the background and have a more prominent role. Unreliable narrator definitely doesn’t mean Louis is lying or being intentionally misleading with his story. He’s unreliable bc time and trauma and potential other factors have done a number on his memory and make it so he omits things or reshapes the story in a way that he feels better about it. But we can see him slowly recognizing those moments and addressing them which makes it more likely that Louis is at least TRYING to be completely truthful. The British guy Morgan asking Louis if he was a “Red” was him asking if he was a Russian spy by the way! I think Louis is both happy and sad. Mostly Happy she can dream and sad that she was having nightmares at all and that she wrote that she didn’t dream. Also I think more than anything he’s happy that this is proof that not everything she wrote was true. Because Claudia wrote down a lot of negative feelings she had toward Louis, so I’m sure Louis can see this as a sign that she didn’t hate him. There’s a probably a deeper takeaway on what happened with Daciana, the old Romanian vampire, but I always thought she was probably just…not all there mentally after all she’s seen and decided to end it. The “you and me, me and you” scene always gets me so emotional! Powerful stuff and I believe Louis believes it, Claudia wants to believe it and then there’s Lestat…hanging around like a reminded of how hard that could be. Can’t wait for the reaction to the next episode, there is so much to unpack with this season 🌻

I always look forward to your comments on these videos. Thank you for saying all that. I will always say how I see things from my point of view. Good, bad, and ugly. If I’m wrong, I’m open to being educated. But they’re just some things that I can’t agree with and I’ll always call it out. I absolutely agree that there are some anti-black elements at play here. And trust me as the season goes on I talk a lot more about it. Especially the trial. Omfg the trial. But we will get there when we get there. The “You and me” scene lives in my brain rent-free. And I agree with everything you said. I look forward to sharing the next episode with yall💐🙏🏾

If you listen closely to what the old world vampire said, she started talking about waiting for her children to join them. She's talking about existing with them in the after life because she doesn't see a way forward. "If you were the only vampire left on earth, that would be enough." What hits most about this for me is this is the one thing Claudia most desperately wants. She wants to be chosen by someone, she wants to be someone's priority. She wasn't her aunt's priority. She killed Charlie and couldn't make someone on her own. She's desperately searching for another vampire to validate her. Lestat's priority was always Louis. And Louis is divided, as shown by Lestat appearing... because for the audience, it's supposed to read as not truly knowing if that "me and you" was kind of, sort of -- in his heart of hearts -- saved for Lestat. It's desperately beautiful and desperately sad.

Oh Frank, no need to apologise for what you call 'rambling' - your opinions, theories and feelings on everything from what's in the show, to the themes that drive it, are never going to be something I'd want to skip past or ignore, because it's exactly what I'm here for. Thanks for taking the time to share that with us. I loved hearing your appreciation for Delainey's performance as Claudia (a fabulous addition to this already excellent cast), and I too have a deep love for Daniel's dry humour and no BS attitude - I can't understand anybody who doesn't love the grouchy guy tbh! Props to the actress playing Daciana because she embodied everything I'd expect of an old world vamp too! I adore the way this show isn't afraid to trust the audience's ability to absorb clues or interpret exchanged looks etc., and that the writers aren't afraid to show us the worst side of each character, as well as the best! As someone who will ALWAYS want more scenes of Lestat (especially with Louis), I relate to you savouring his ominous appearance (still looking great, I might add), but oh how my heart breaks for Claudia when the camera pans to Lestat sitting beside her in the truck, because even in Louis' head, she is always having to compete with Louis' companion heart! The music in that moment (like every other moment) is a thing of beauty also! Cannot wait to see the rest of your reactions - and thanks for being thoughtful, empathetic, and a great enthusiast for this show! 💚🌻

my godddd this episode. It was a little slow but I love how it felt like a transition from the last season into this one- the slow pacing helped perfectly as a sort of palate cleanser in terms of intensity. Louis' You and Me speech was amazing and lives in my head rent free. He says she would be enough, and immediately looks over at Dreamstat. If she was enough, why is he right there? What a scene. The music is amazing too, made specifically for the show. That violin sound is enough to get me emotional all on its own. I was waiting for this! Can't wait to see your reaction and discussion on season 2 Totally agree with you on the victim blaming conversation. I think the point of the show is to show how "Hurt people hurt people" and how trauma creates trauma. But at the same time it is not something that can justify abuse and toxicity. When lestat controls or abuses louis, there is no excuse. When louis forces claudia to become a vampire without consent, there is no excuse. When claudia recklessly kills people of the town, there is no excuse. All 3 of them have their own trauma or past and its sad and understandable but at the same time characters need to be held responsible for their current actions. That's what makes the series so engaging because there is lots of gray area.

Frank, the beautiful music you refer to at the end of episode 7 of season 1 is Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata”. If you ever watch the original movie from the 1990’s, Lestat (played by Tom Cruise) is playing this on the harpsichord when Louis and Claudia return to their townhome after believing they had killed him. I really like Lestat being there at the end, cause that makes you question who Louis words are really for. Even if his words were a 100% for Claudia, he would still be lying, Claudia will never be enough for Louis and Lestat is always going to be there in his mind

I know that some people thought this was a slow opening (which to be fair it objectively is), but I love this episode so much. It's such a perfect start to the season and I loved that they showed this part of Louis' and Claudia's journey. In the movie they just skip all of it and go directly to Paris which doesn't make sense at all for them to do. Here their environment really reflects the tension in their relationship, and is part of why Paris is so believable as a new beginning in contrast. I also absolutely love Delainey in this role, she really stole this episode!

🌻I've looked forward to your commentary for season 2 and i am so happy this video dropped today!! the way you break down these characters these characters and see through their humanity in that 30-40 minute long segment is my favorite part of your videos. lets really talk about it because there are so any themes at play. I wish i watched iwav with little to no context but i got into the show because of spoilers and watching it for myself i could immediately see why claudia was the light for louis and how lestat resented claudia for showing louis what healthy love feels like. and why louis still loves lestat but tries to convince claudia and himself that he doesn't care. they are all so flawed even as immortal beings and living that long would inevitably give them more time to repeat the same toxic behaviors and patterns that humans would reap the consequences of much sooner. molloy is such a great perspective and i look forward to your commentary on armand. one of my favorite scenes is the "you and me" speech louis gave claudia and lestat being there only in louis thoughts, also my favorite track of the whole show is from that scene; and your analysis of lestat in that scene was spot on!! aside from all of all the different opinions and character interpretations of viewers, i'm pretty sure we can all agree Delainey Hayles portrays Claudia so well : it never felt like i had to be reintroduced or convinced that she IS claudia her and daniel are two of my favorite characters bc they both call bs from a mile away, or a century ago I cant wait for you to see episode 2!!

Thanks for uploading so early! I love how both these seasons orbit around the theme of "the odyssey of memory." I feel like their take on this theme in Season 2 is more "Memory is a monster" (imo). Looking forward to seeing how the story resonates with you! BTW: "Red" in this context means soviet. And she threw herself on the fire because she knew what they were fantasizing about just wasn't possible, and that it was all futile. Very sad scene.

Really enjoying watching your take on this show! Yeah, when people say Louis is an unreliable narrator they don't necessarily mean he's lying - but this show really digs its fingers into how emotion and point of view color recollection. Louis is telling HIS truth, but his truth may not be completely accurate - and in fact an accurate past is not necessarily something that can ever be 100% discerned. This episode even reveals that Claudia herself in her diaries is not 100% accurate (whether or not she remembers her dreams, she DOES dream, even though she writes she didn't). So even when the diary pages aren't ripped out, it calls into question the veracity of her journals - the "hard evidence" that Louis keeps falling back on. 🌻

Honestly, thank you again for your insightful analysis. Sure some want to say, well, it's fiction, so therefore nothing counts because "oh well, it's not real life," but stories from the dawn of time are fictionalized versions of what happens in our real life and for some people to just completely dismiss that does a disservice to the messages and themes that are being relayed through these characters. I've said it now dozens of times, the character of Lestat causes you to question morality, to question his ideas of love, to question a lot of things, but to not recognize his cruelty, as you've said, "just because he suffered abuse himself," doesn't make what he's doing right and certainly not justifiable. And while we're there with that thought, we also have to say, Louis killed his fair share and so has Claudia which would make them equally vile in the eyes of their many victims and their families. The actors themselves admit that their characters are vile because of many of their actions towards others or towards each other. No spoilers, having seen season 2, my opinion on that, still has not changed, but we have this tendency to side with the POV we are given because we feel like we know them more, and to repeat it over and over again, as the actors have themselves as well, this is the old unreliable narrator, this is the boyfriend making himself seem like he had nothing to do with the troubles in the relationship, this is Claudia talking to a bunch of pages where reality could be anything.🌻

55:16 - True! There are lots of ways a narrator can be unreliable, or subjectively biased, even without always being deliberately deceitful. Sometimes the entire point of unreliability is that you can't ever truly know. 🙂

The scene with the old woman vampire was confusing at first. She tasted Claudia's blood, then started with "we own the night", talking about the good things, about how she and Claudia and Louis could do in the journey. But then she ended with "we own nothing". Imo, Daciana after tasting Claudia's blood recognizing that Claudia is very young and didn't experience vampirism as long as her. The good things Daciana mentioned was Claudia's delusion about vampirism, what Claudia thought she could get, the happiness, the power to own the night. I think that was what Daciana expected at first too, she said "wait for her children to join us"... But all of her "childs" were dead, so it's not gonna happen and so does the fact that she'll join Louis and Claudia. The life as a vampire was lonely and depressing. Daciana believe joining them won't change their core problem and her problem. The vampires in fact don't own the night - or the happiness delusion they thought they could achieve in immortality. So they "own nothing".

I think this episode was completely made for the show, in the book I remember there are only mentions of them travelling for years but this episode really fleshes out their trauma and frustrations in order to get to Paris and a good place with each other relationship wise. Red” means Morgan was asking if Louis was part of the soviet army and is a deserter. And I get what you mean. I roll my eyes at how time skips unnaturally come up in conversation to establish in shows, as if purely for the audience to know. This show brings it up only when it needs to coz we as viewers can see the world changing around the characters or for the sake of explaining key details to Daniel, Louis brings up time skips sparingly.

Thank you so much for watching. I was thinking about splitting it into two. But I thought it would be more impactful to have them together. I doubt a lot of people will watch the commentary part if it wasn't attached to the reaction. And to me I think that commentary part is the most important. I'm aware that people can still skip the commentary part of just to get to the reaction that they're here for, but at least it might make them take a look since it's already there. 🌸🌸 Just a heads up a lot of my season 2 videos will be this long😬there's just so much to say. I appreciate that you discuss ground rules and your observations not only of the story but also audience interactions and behaviors. Nearly all fandoms have issues with spoiling material, abuse apologia, racism, misogynoir, etc. And when it isn't treated seriously it just becomes worse. In my mind, when you make it clear that it won't be tolerated it can help people to reflect on their own behavior. And other people who are more stubborn or less considerate may stop or leave. Ultimately it makes these spaces safer. A lot of us, especially LGBT/MaGes, have experienced or witnessed abuse. And it messes with our ideas around consent or even makes one think that they are incapable of abusive behavior. Personally, I don't think that it is always the case that abusive or violent people were victims themselves. It happens, but it isn't a prerequisite. It mostly comes down to abuse of power and interpersonal relationships. I will try to keep my comments brief until we get to the end of the season. To try to avoid spoilers.
@FrankFreezy_
@FrankFreezy_ 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for saying all that. So true. Communication is how we coexist better. And I felt all that had to be said. I think that's the part that gets this fandom so riled up. Whenever I say things like that they feel called out cause they feel like they need to reflect on their own behavior just as you said. I wish they would just leave in peace, but part of me actually wants them to engage with their own behavior. If there's a new growth that can be gotten from there, the world is a better place. Please feel free to always drop a comment, I'd love to hear more from you 🌸🌸

@hel117
@hel117 3 ай бұрын
The first part of this video is so important; I adore Lestat as a character, he's fascinating, he's charismatic. But he's also an abuser, and there is no justification for how he treats the people in his life. I really hope people can learn that you can like characters without rationalizing their actions as acceptable, and it's important to call abuse abuse and even in fiction victim blaming is not the move. If people are empathizing with the abuser more than their victims, that's a problem. I also think there's a "no means no" narrative about consent which is snappy but overly simplistic; "yes" on it's own isn't always consent. consent also needs to be freely given (no pressure or undue influence) and informed or it doesn't count. Also; I think if we aren't talking about Louis and Claudia as incredibly nuanced and beautiful characters, we are doing a disservice to the show and that's a damn shame.

Especially the whole vuctim blaming thing 🤌🏾 and it doesn't really surprise my that there are people who don't like Claudia. I'm guessing it's the same people who try to justify everything Lestat does 😅 I do go back and forth in my head about the "why did you turn me?" speech she gave Louis, though. On one hand the choice was obviously a selfish one but on the other she can't really be that upset about it when she literally tried to do the same thing, not just to Charlie but other guys after that. I love your videos and your reflections! I love coming here to the comments and seeing people discuss things so well, explain things that are on my mind and things I never even considered before. You really created a beautiful community with how you are open to conversation. I said it before and I'll say it again: you can love a character and still acknowledge all the BS they do. Trying to make them 'flawless' is insulting to how complex Anne Rice and the writers of the show made them. Personally, when I read the books ages ago, I didn't understand all of Louis' pain. He was just an annoying white plantation owner. The show did such a great job at highlighting things I probably missed, I LOVE this Louis, he is my favorite Louis, and I need to reread the books to see what they saw to make him. And people need to learn to LET you get there and that your 'there' maybe different from theirs. And that's the beauty of art. I was gonna say I don't even need to add anything to what you and other amazing people already said, but here, I wrote a paragraph and didn't even start the episode. Honestly, Franklin.

1:13:24 - I think Daciana saw all of Claudia's hopes and dreams for a happily ever after with another vampire other than Lestat or Louis and then deliberately took that dream away from Claudia just to punish Claudia for taking Daciana's fledgling away from Daciana. Like, you took something from me that I really cared about, so I'm going to take something from you that you really care about? But, I dunno, maybe I'm wrong. Lol

I love how you have such good interpretations of the characters-- like the Me and You scene-- so many people have such an unfavorable view of Louis seeing Lestat while he's saying this to Claudia, as if Louis is lying to her and doesn't feel this way about her. To me when people do that, it's such a bad faith reading. I get that Louis' complex, trauma-induced memory edits and mental illness and intoxication w Lestat can seem like a betrayal to Claudia's mission and his love for her, but Louis is SO human, and everyone should be able to understand it imo. I loved your perspective that he's trying to convince himself because intellectually, he knows that Lestat and him are a volatile combination and he needed to be strong for Claudia for once, but also that he knew that this was all Lestat wanted to hear too, and the grief of what could have been with all three of them weighing on his conscience even though there was nothing he could realistically have done to make their relationship less toxic. 🌻I love this show so much, and your reactions are wonderful contributions to fandom. 💜

I think people hold so much focus on whether characters love or care for each other in some attempt to dampen the harm they've done (which you dont need to do to like a character). Its not completely unimportant in character interpretation but there often comes this view of 'love' as a noble or morally good feeling and it does a disservice to the nuances of a character (or real people) and places redeemability on an emotion that you cannot control, rather than the will to change. When talking about Lestat, it seems not the real point of most convos whether he feels love for Claudia. He does things he thinks are good for her, but ultimately she is secondary to Louis (as she is to Lestat for Louis). Feeling love does not change this cruelty.
