I kind of disagree with your assessment, I really enjoyed this episode and it's one of the very few examples where the darkness helped thematically (I do have a very bright TV so maybe I could see more though). Anyway, what I love about this channel is even though I haven't shared your views very often with Acolyte, I'm so grateful it's not the hate bait other channels are focusing on, criticisms here are valid and not just hyper fixating on silly inconsequential things like Mundis age.

He did NOT say that he was a Sith. I am not going to go back and watch the episode so that I can get the exact quote (I guess you can if you want), but he said something like: I'm what YOU might call Sith. Which does nothing but back up what you said. That he is just a person who can use the Force, just wants to use it to do what he wants, that he doesn't adhere to what Sith is or might not even KNOW what a Sith really is.

Even though he didn’t say he’s a Sith, for the sake of the argument, let’s say he is. He said he’s looking for a pupil and an acolyte. Never the word apprentice, the proper term for a proper student. Acolytes rank below Apprentices and alongside Assassins. They are assassins if you may (no pun intended lol). So Qamir must be a Sith Apprentice to Plagueis or Tenebris. If he’s not a Sith, then he was at least trained by them and may be looking for a student to help him kill the Sith bc idk they might have betrayed him….similar to Ventress’s story

Maybe I am being too generous, but I didn't feel like the scampering felt too odd to me personally. When I watched, I felt like Smile-o Ren had 3 priorities, in order they are: Find a new Acolyte, Kill Mea, Kill the jedi that saw him. And until his mask got destroyed, it really would not have been that disastrous of an outcome if any of them survived. Even if the Jedi knew a sith was out there, he could just hide, they didn't know his identity or how to track him. But if his face is known, the Jedi will plaster that on every holo in the galaxy. That's why he let's Jecki live the first time, but when she destroys his mask and sees his face, she has to die. That is also why he specifically keeps Jecki and Sol alive, he wants to torture Sol, so he has to kill his padawan first, but I think he also wants to do it with Osha watching, because whatever made Mea a suitable acolyte would also apply to Osha. He wants to push Sol to his limits, and use him to manipulate Osha in accepting the dark side. Yord only survives as long as he does, because the first time Osha wakes up right then, and Qimir switches focus to Osha, and then Sol sends him away. Similarly with Jecki, he destroys one of her lightsabers, and then starts chasing after Mea, because he cares more about killing Mea than he does Jecki at that point, and he likely also knows that he absolutely can overpower her, so he wants to kill her when Sol is there.

He also made it a point to kill every single Jedi in front of Master Sol, not just Jecki. He is definitely playing a power card to show that the Jedi aren't the only ones with power. Plus all of what you said is true as well. This wasn't simply a "scamper away for necessity". It was calculated. The opportunity to either kill Mae and claim Osha or to claim both as an apprentice was the first priority which is why he made it a point to keep Mae close when he learns where she was at and then manipulate Osha as well.

Also, putting aside the in-universe reasoning for it, I feel like the running back and forth was done to make the whole scene more intense and unpredictable. There's something fun IMO about having a fight scene where the opponent's hiding in a dark forest and can pop out to attack at any moment.

Also I agree about the interview maybe not being accurate about the term "acolyte". If I were writing this, I'd make Qimir a pretender. A fake Sith. There's a 99% chance that his "You can't fight the Jedi with a weapon" line is meant to be actual Sith doctrine, but what if it's MEANT to be gobblygook? Like taddad2641 said, he's someone who maybe found the grave of a long deceased Sith Lord who was buried with his sabers and armor. Or, like in the Darth Bane novels, there's an underground market for Sith artifacts and Qimir, being a Force-sensitive smuggler, got his hands on some. I'm reminded of a line from Dooku in the old Clone Wars cartoon. "You wear the trappings of the Sith, you fight like the Sith, but this can be imitated however." Qimir would be outted to the Jedi as a pretender. Thus Ki-Adi would still be telling the truth in Episode I. Qimir ultimately escapes the Jedi, but like maxwell_j_R said he encounters Teneberous or Plagieus and is given a...lesson...in what a Sith truly is.

Mae is unstable. But she also just wants justice. At first it seemed to be about revenge. But latter we saw that could also mean getting the Jedi to turn themselves in and confess their “crimes”. She left Qimir to turn herself in, because he was too eagerly pressing her to kill the next Jedi and she realized that that’s not the only way to go about it. She went with Sol to get his confession and presumably to somehow turn the table by convincing him to turn himself in. Qimir claims that he want Mae as his acolyte, but he is a Sith Apprentice or hopeful who’s using Mae to complete his assignment. With how he seemed to want Mae near as much as he wanted to kill the Jedi, I’m thinking that he wants her for his own scheme which ties into the central mystery as to want actually happened 16 years ago. I don’t think that when Qimir asked Sol if he remembered him, that he was referring to their meeting in episode two. Someone ratted the coven out. Just as someone saved Mae, and helped her off world and link her up with Qimir… My theory is that the mystery of 16 years ago was a setup. Mother Aniseya meet a Sith Lord, they got it on, and he showed to her to place where her and her coven could settle in. However if it came out that she, their leader had an affair with a man who also helped them find refuge, it would jeopardize her position. And since her coven was broken, they needed a miracle. So she found a surrogate mother, Koril to carry her twins, while she tried to convince the rest of the witches that they weren’t hers and that they are the result of a miracle because they are on the right track now. The Sith saw an opportunity to use this to their advantage knowing that the Jedi would be alarmed that these witches were practicing the Darkside and training children, and how these witches already pressed into a corner might be protective of the girls. But I think that it’s possible that Qimir was also there, and he was the informer and wants to use Mae (or Osha now) against his Master. The problem with all of this though is that there are only 3 episodes left and the runtime of Star Wars live action shows generally average to be just about 35 minutes,.. and now the Jedi need to conduct an investigation as to what happened in this episode. And I just don’t see yet how they are going to able just to wrap up what they already had to deal with.

@@justinhammer3196 The mystery for the Jedi isn’t what happened 16 years ago. That’s Osha and Mae’s. It’s what’s happened here. There is no evidence that Mae survived or of a Sith Lord. But, the girl that looks like Osha, was trained by the Jedi, and had been Sol’s apprentice (Padawan). Sol had lead the Jedi party. All of the Jedi were killed by someone skilled with lightsaber and with a lightsaber. And yet only Sol and “Osha” returned. With Sol claiming that it was a Sith, while “Osha” spins a story that it was Sol, and he wanted her to kill the other Jedi, just as he was responsible for what happened 16 years earlier. Torbin and Kelnacca had issues with the past (both are now dead) Osha had issues with the past, Indara is dead. Sol, Osha, and Mae are the only ones who can blow the whistle on the Sith. We just watched Yord and Jecki, two of the central Jedi characters, get killed. Nobody is making it back to Coruscant to report this, and even if somehow someone does, it will be dismissed, swept under the rug, and forgotten about. Heck, I expect at least two of those three to end up dead by the end (will it be Mae or Osha who survives, that’s the question). There only canon issue is how this relates to the Sith lineage. I would not be surprised in the least if Qimir is either a pretender-as you discuss in the video-or if Darth Plagueis is his Master and Qimir ends up dead for almost ruining generations of Sith planning. Plageuis being more selective in his next apprentice, or even cycling through a few more apprentices, until he finally ends up with Young Sheev could work and could be the basis of more stories in-between now and the Prequel Era.

well kiddo - u might want to go rewatch this episode - he actually has her in his hands with a laser sword to her head for a full 2 minutes for his lame Acolyte monologue - if he really wanted to kill her he would've done it. I'm sure the writers want some sort of lovey-dovey moment with the sisters at the end of all this. This entire series is just bad and lazy writing.

I was nice to see Cortosis effects used in live action. So there's an important distinction it seems a lot of reviewers either didn't catch or gloss over... Darth Grimcutty, ahem, Qimir, never actually said he was a Sith. He told Sol, "A Jedi like you might call me a Sith." When he did, it sounded to me as if he were mocking the Jedi for their tendency to make judgments based on ignorance and dogma rather than investigating and learning the actual truth. Another observation... When delivering his lines while wearing the helmet, Darth Grimcutty sounds like Raymond Reddington from The Blacklist. Not just a modified version of James Spader's voice (but it did sound like him), but the way Redd talks, the types of words he might use or the topics and perspectives he'd bring up. Can't help but wonder if that's intentional, or if I'm just seeing a connection that wasn't intended to be there. But really, without the helmet Jacinto doesn't speak in the same cadence, his words don't seem to carry the same intention. Loving the show so far. Old school Kung Fu Theater in a Star Wars setting. I want more starfighter battles, but still more of this please.

this episode had so much potential but mae going from 'i'm going to surrender to the jedi' to attacking jecki and not even trying to explain herself even when she had numerous chances to completely broke any immersion i might have had. the writing is terrible, in that respect at least. i genuinely enjoyed the first two episodes but the story has become worse and worse as the episodes have progressed. also to clarify: if they had established that mae has some kind of internal instability in terms of morals/personality then it would have worked, but with the way they did it, it's as if everyone forgot that she said she was going to surrender to the jedi and therefore wanted to be caught. i also thought that when the 'sith' showed up her next logical step would be to ally with the jedi (or at least hide behind them) because she knew the 'sith' would want to kill her. i also don't get the whole parent trap switcheroo thing she did, because if her loyalty is to her sister then why would she leave her with the master she just betrayed and who wants her dead? you are literally giving him the most powerful weapon he could possibly use against you.

She was willing to surrender to the jedi because she thought she'd be safe from him on corusant, but once she realised he was on the planet she thought he would kill every single jedi and just wanted to get away as fast as possible The abandoning Osha part I don't have a great explanation for really, but maybe her motivation will be more clear next episode

Plageous didn't discover anything but how to fuck up so bad you unlearn your entire life's work. Tenebris was the scientist who discovered how to program force parasites. Yes it was the Jedi that were explicitly stated to have been hunting the awesome force witches. Exterminating competing ideologies is a Jedi's second favorite hobby. Kidnapping all the children is their favorite. Portraying the ugly truths of the Jedi Order is the best thing StarWars has done since Clone Wars the final season. Why do all these moderately positive single line comments all then say this is somehow explaining events that aren't a muystery and have been well known since the 90s and very cleanly recodified by Disney? Whoever wrote this is competing with that Kennedy lady for the SW creator who knows the least about StarWars

First of all, I also don't believe that the guy is actually a Sith. He has just bestowed that title upon himself. Another unrelated comment... Regarding the issues of characters disappearing, etc: I think this is the result of Disney trying to get episodes down to about the 30 minute mark, and making the episodes more consistant in length. A lot of people were constantly complaining about inconsistant episode length before.... and it looks like Disney was listening to the fans, unfortunately. I firmly believe that an episode should be as long or as short as it needs to be. Consistancy be damned.

I also thought it was pretty decent until I started noticing more and more things that don’t really add up. Here a few examples: Why did Qimir even start a fight with the Jedi if he wanted to stay hidden? He even states that it is Mae’s fault that he got discovered even though he could have just simple killed her after he killed the Wookie Jedi and left. Then he again has the chance to kill her multiple times this episode and doesn’t do it just so the plot can insert another Jedi that attacks him from behind. Why does Mae change her alliance every few minutes? Last episode she wanted to surrender herself to the Jedi but then tries to kill Jecki? She says she loves her sister but doesn’t protect her in any way and attacks her again at the end and now she seems to want to kill Sol again? Why doesn’t Sol immediately recognize that it isn’t Osha when he can even feel that he knows Qimir while he still has his mask on? Why do the bugs only attack after Osha sticks the light to Qimirs back when everybody was fighting with lightsabers before that and it got established that they also react to lightsabers. I just am really annoyed at this point by all the things that happen even though they make no sense just because the writers don’t seem to know how to write a coherent plot. Things that make no sense happen just so that later something else can happen. At least the lightsaber duels were pretty cool I have to say. Especially seeing Cortosis armor in action was pretty sick. But immediately when anybody starts talking or if they try to advance the plot everything starts to fall apart again which is just really sad to see in my opinion.

All valid points of criticism. There were just so many questionable decisions especially regarding the direction & plot among other aspects. I agree that maybe Smilo isn't truly a SIth proper. But even still, if this news makes it back to the Temple it doesn't really matter if he's telling the truth or not. This should still be on their radar & invalidate Ki-Adi-Mundi in his PT scene, unless he's got alzheimers. I too posited the Knight of Ren theory last week. That's basically the only way I can see to explain this discrepancy in an organic manner and salvage what I mentioned. They're already playing fast & loose with the timeline anyway, so why not slightly invalidate the fine details in another piece of printed media like that comic? They've already altered comic material to fit into live or animation plenty of times before. Kanan, Ahsoka, Ventress, Ki-Adi iirc as well... Unfortunately this episode's dialogue doesn't quite support it, but you never know what they'll pull considering the plot doesn't make a lot of sense to begin with. We got 3 more to get through. Yeah I don't know what they're doing with Mae. But on the topic of backstory. Qimir plants a seed in Osha's head about Sol, she questions him, Sol says he's going to explain everything to her. Mae pulls the switcheroo and is now with Sol, and so on. They're clearly setting up Qimir telling Osha his version of events of what Sol is guilty of to play off her doubt, and Mae being told Sol's truth when she is there to finish the job & kill him. I don't know how it plays out, but it's an obvious telegraph. This show isn't subtle by any means.

I enjoyed most of the fighting in this episode. I think there were a few blocky parts in the choreography. Especially when he was fighting the unnamed jedi. I think Sol missing randomly throughout the fight didn’t make sense. But it was probably the best fight since Disney purchased Star Wars. But as with every episode so far the writing has been terrible. I really liked the performances from sol, jecki, and qimir. I haven’t really liked the twins performance so far. I really really really wanted to like Kenobi and Ahsoka, I even tried to convince myself that they are good shows. But in the end I had to accept that they were not. And I don’t even want to think about Book of Boba Fett or Mando Season 3. During the Old Republic, acolytes were candidates that underwent trials to eventually become apprentice to a Sith. So I don't have an issue with the term acolyte here. However the "you Jedi would call me Sith" worries me. Based on what we know from interviews I can imagine that they try to build a narrative that the Sith do not really exist and it's simply a label used by the Jedi to group all non-Jedi forceusers together.

Am I the only person that is fine with dark scenes being dark? I have no problem seeing what is happening very clearly. I keep seeing this complaint in modern cinema criticisms and I don't agree with there being an issue. The Long Night in Game of Thrones seemed to start the trend of whining about dark scenes. The one about the night being dark and full of terrors and chaos. If you can see what is happening then "listen" to what cinematography is telling you about the scenes. The Loghtsabers pop in a way we rarely see, and there are a lot of them. It's a non-issue, expecting a standard of brightness during night scenes is limiting. It could all be seen. I'm glad modern cinematographers are embracing darker tones to take advantage of current device capabilities. Stop watching on your phones.

my general thoughts in no particular order: - fight felt almost disingenuous. even trying to accept "he wanted to go after mae the most" at face value, seemed like far too many opportunities for our "sith" to dispose of people, but he waited - yeah agree he doesn't seem like a real grand plan rule of 2 sith. probably a darksider who wants to assume the title for the benefits it might bring, to attract jedi, to attract the actual sith, just "cause it suits his perceptions about himself", etc. 100% agree - mae+osha still feel like meh/bland characters with no real motivation to identify with. osha seems to grow a bit, and the direction of fully casting aside her past and deciding to reject mae and bring her in was good, but the naivete to not subdue her properly when she had the chance KILLED me - mae similarly seems so flip-floppy about what she's doing, we don't really see her deliberating or going through struggle to change her direction all the time so she seems shallow and unworthy of our caring - seems our sith pretender has a jedi history and that's probably tied to the secrets mentioned about master sol? somewhat interesting - almost feels like too many characters died. i'm not generally against it, but i think because the main twins feel so lifeless, it feels like we lost more with supporting characters taking the L - so the apprentice had handcuffs but once Sol decided not to kill he did nothing to subdue/capture??? - Sol was surprisingly powerful w/ emotion, I'd expect a jedi who seemed to want to stay a jedi to get weaker with a flood of emotion as he tried to resist it. Anakin got strong in ep3 because he fully embraced the anger and wasn't scared of it, but Sol doesn't seem to match that profile - the bugs were totally a clone wars plotline, agree w/ the other commenter that said that - can't believe the apprentice just left the dead wookiee master's lightsaber on the ground after it was damaged! that is his life (as per obi wan), treat it with respect and bring it home!!! - the whole sabers frizting out thing was weird, we need some explanation overall yeah still a mixed bag for me

I felt the deaths of pretty much all the characters the narrative gave us any reason to care about was gratuitous. To have the one character that sacrificed their life to save others (and look like they will be resurrected to boot) be the PDA Droid and none of the Jedi was insanity. I don't want to argue about whether you think Jecke was gay. She was as queer-coded as Star Wars is likely to let any character get, which makes killing her for no reason other than so the bad guy and prove he's bad is an awful example of a 'kill your gays' trope. Stunts like these are why I got pissed off with Willow halfway through, and now I'm dangerously close to giving up on the Acolyte. I don't need them to give gay characters (or ambiguous characters we're allowed to interpret as gay or not as we wish) plot armor. I just want their death to mean something. We already knew the bad guy was bad. Instead of this stupid back and forth an run around in the dark with no coherent structure episode, it should have been an escape episode. Have the first part of the fight end with Mae in custody and Qimir driven off, but Sol Yord and Jecke plus civilians are the only survivors. Then they need to trek out of the forest with this guy hunting them and every nasty thing within miles attracted to the battle and wounded. Then every skirmish has a structure, every death has a purpose. The confusion and tension are real as the Dark Side makes the night horrific.

My theory is that this guy is an attempt at an apprentice that will fail. He is the acolyte. Under the early teachings of a Rule of Two Apprentice who's looking to begin the process of overthrowing their master. And he's simply taking the dynamic he was likely taught of way too early, and running with it. He'll ultimately die and the secrecy of the sith will be safe. Despite it being closer to the prequal trilogy than any other visual media project, we're still not quite sure who the exact dark lord is at the moment or their apprentice so tossing in a failed sith acolyte is not exactly a problem. But yeah they did go real kylo ren-ish when designing him.

"Scampering away"? The Master was after Mae. He killed who he needed to but his sole objective was her until Jecki knocked his helmet off. It's pretty obvious. Your nitpicks are the result of a lack of media literacy, a willingness to jump on the hate bandwagon for this show, or both.

It's just so bizarre from a marketing perspective for Disney. This is their first big foray into the pre-TCW era, it's the perfect place to take it slow and put out something that provides a lot of in-world minutia so that fans new and old can get a sense of the scope and norms for the period, but instead they've chosen to make it this *constantly* consuming, hard to follow, overarching plot that moves from place to place and feels allergic to subtext. I liked that the Jedi fit *some* of the classic archetypes (the dude who looks like a fuckboy bible camp counselor is actually spot on, but I don't think he's spot on for reasons that Disney would fully understand lol) but the dialog from them is just lifeless and boring, and it's moving a story along that we already know the conclusion to! They've been foreshadowing that the Jedi are responsible for the death of her family from the first episode! I mean, Hayden Christensen wasn't the most palatable actor either, but that's why Star Wars' bread and butter is all about the visual motifs! Show! Don't tell!

Either Qimir is a Sith Apprentice who wanted Mae as an "Acolyte" either to eventually become an apprentice to usurp his master, or simply use her as an assassin akin to Ventress or Savage Oppress for Count Dooku, he's an early knight of Ren like you and others mentioned, or he's just a rogue darksider. EIther way I think he's a cool character, would be fun to see the actual Sith at some point in this show.

Hey Eck! Speaking of the dark visuals in the episode. Do you watch on a PC or a 4K tv? I find that watching on the tv you get the 4K footage with HDR where the footage isn’t as flat or dark. It sucks that Disney doesn’t let us watch 4K on our PCs…

The cockroaches and some dialogue conserning the "darkness" were a bit too goofy for me, but I actually thought the running of the boy toy was pretty interesting. Focusing primarly on Mae, plushis stealth and that can just disappear if you get distracted is kinda cool. I like the idea that he ran from his sith master and no longer is a sith. But I honestly hope they don´t bring the Knights of Ren into this, idk... Mae and Osha are kinda weird characters that I still don´t fully understand too, Sol is pretty cool and I think it´s been obvious that he has been hiding something from the begining so glad to see we are close to know what it is.

If you've enjoyed the combat, don't go and analyse it, cuz it'll ruin your enjoyment. In short: the show forget tools it's given its characters from cut to cut. It's horrible to see how awful the fight scenes actually are. The characters continusly choose not to get an advantage the show estabilished they can because the plot has to happen. I get that characters can make mistakes, but that amount makes all of them look stupid.

I think the reason he kept leaving scenes is because Mae was his primary target. She quite literally said to his face "Im going to tell the Jedi everything" so it makes sense to get rid of her first. It could have been done better but I didnt see it as a major issue. Why worry about killing a simple padawan when the person who knows all your secrets is currently on the run 2 feet away. Go after her, deal with the jedi later

I think through some crazy plot Sol is actually involved with the witches and either is the father of the twins, or has had his DNA stolen and this sith guy is like some clone witch dark force summon son or something. Like he is related to someone here I reckon, maybe even all three of them :P

bro u are like the least factual starwars youtuber ive ever seen, he literally says he is nothing but that the jedi MIGHT call him sith. He never once said he was a sith. where are you pulling this bullshit out of?

Or what if he's not a master but an apprentice who's trying to seek a Apprentice to defeat his master. Seether always backstabbing each other and seeking an apprentice to defeat their master so they could become the master and then the cycle just keeps continuing.
