ALS or EDC Holsters for Training Days? Does it Matter?

I’m a cop. I run a safariland level 3 for patrol. Who the fuck cares if a civilian uses a retention holster! Holy shit. I love civilians training and carrying guns. I tell people all the time, I can’t be there in seconds to help you in a life threatening situation. My area is pretty big. Longest code 3 run has been almost 10 minutes. So carry those guns, train often, and defend yourself. (Within the law of course).

As active LEO, If I’m open carrying (pretty much only when I’m on duty or in a classroom training session), then I have a positive retention holster (ALS). If I’m carrying concealed, it’s in a kydex iwb holster - out of sight and out of mind. But I train to shoot with both. If your gun is going to be visible and possibly accessible to a passerby in public - you need to have positive retention. I’ve taken reports from victims who literally have their guns taken from them in public.

I'll throw something else in the mix too. After living through the summer of violence that happened a couple of years ago, it is a good idea for people to train from time to time with full external quick reaction kit, with neighborhood defense in mind. Joke about LARPing if you want to but it's an actual thing. This civil society that we enjoy is balancing on a knife edge.

Very interesting video and very valid points. It seems most ranges around me, if they allow you to draw from a holster at all, it must be owb. But I agree that most of the training that matters is after the pistol clears the holster. It's important to train drawing from your carry holster too. I get those reps in at home with a laser cartridge. I draw and fire at the target. When actually on the range, the most important training comes after the weapon clears the holster. 3 gun requires some kind of retention for the pistol that is more than friction due to running around. Carbine training with a pistol as a backup requires more than just friction retention. Try to draw from appendix with a chest rig or plate carrier on 😆 Any kind of working outside or in/around equipment/vehicles requires more than just friction..

I have seen pistols literally fall out of open top holsters and hit the dirt at competitions when people are running around part of a stage where they don’t need to draw yet. The ALS or Thumb Drive type retention is a great way to make sure this doesn’t happen and it barely affects draw time - if at all. If you can conceal a security holster for CCW I think it’s a fantastic idea. Think about all the situations you could encounter: hard running or jumping over an obstacle, vehicle / motorcycle accidents, slipping and falling, self-Defense involving hand to hand fighting / hands on… the security device will keep your gun concealed and in the holster instead of flying out of the holster and sliding out on the pavement. A great idea for civilians any day.

I agree with you on all the shooting and moving stuff. Active retention for edc is just not a thing. You can “what if it all day”. The data is just not there to support this kind of an assumption. And there are very few edc holsters that allow for active retention outside of the thumb strap

I was a shooter before I joined the military, after I got out I kept shooting but I added more holster options for different situations and environments. I train all of them all year long cause one can never shoot too much. IWB appendix, OWB hip side, mid drop SAFARILAND with QLS mounted to an MHA. All require training and train I do. Be flexible and try new things out for different environments, it’s expensive but fun.

Really good subject - I remember taking my first classes and having zero clue on which to have. I do think that it is a good experience to go through the learning curve of going through a lot of different holsters/types - I personally have earned a lot. However, there is NO better holster for outdoors training than a Safariland holster. I hear there's an awesome shop with a magician there who can make and mod you a sweet holster - even for an Atlas! The belt flop on the UBL is an easy fix. You just take a strip of kydex heat up the ends and pull it through the belt loops then bend them in so when it cools down it clips onto the edges of the UBL.

IMHO it´s wise to train with a rig similar to wich you use at job if LEO or Military, same if you conceal carry a gun. But there´s no need to make inflamatory statements like "if you wear this you are that". Any training is better than no training, so let the peolple train as they wish.

14:05 I 4pm carry because it’s more comfortable but I wish I can appendix carry more then I do. I like apx carry because my draw is a lot faster and more intuitive and I also feel like the firearm is a lot more in my control when it’s In front of me rather then behind me and “out of sight” kind of.

Agreed, but once the gun is out, what part of the fight are you training for? The shooting part, the movement part, the communication part. So does the holster matter when training these skills?

@@rdrgear the holster still matters after the fight is over, in regards to re-holstering the weapon after ensuring the threat has been neutralized. The last thing you want is the authorities pulling up and you have a gun in hand.

You have to build skills to draw from to fight. There is no cookie cuter standard. In the real fight the bad guy gets a vote as well. I could bring my gun to the range in a Home Depot bucket and still get the reps in.

@@rdrgear you can only be as good as your training. That being said, what so every you train for will never have you ready for any and every spontaneous situation. The "Train..." saying is better then having nothing at all. The bulk of the fight is keeping a cool head and thinking through your actions which is easier said then done. That echos the type of training you do like you guys mentioned. Top tier operators will train a certain way and civilians will train a different way.

there are some severe social consequences to carrying firearms openly, so our recommendation (in general) is concealed carry. However, there are advantages to being able to practice and train with an OWB holster when necessary. Not one answer for every person

I am looking for a good ALS/SLS holster for a Springfield XD 45, the few that I have seen have the slight forward cant. I prefer the straight up and down draw. Do you have any suggestions or should I be looking for a new gun to accommodate the holster that I want?

All Safariland holsters do have a slight forward cant. The only one that I'm pretty sure doesn't is the Safariland model 6280. Safariland Does sell a product that is a normal UBL with slots in it so you can adjust the cant.

@Odyssey Training I can appreciate the fact everyone has a right to their own opinion... but as mentioned in the video there's many legitimate reasons for that kind of holster use. I'd also hope that as long as a student is safe, a firearm instructor would be judgement free and willing to teach someone how to use all the tools available to them... To be frank those comments sounded closed minded..and at the time I immediately thought to myself that's a person who wouldn't be willing to learn new info or techniques... although that's just me making an assumption based on video on KZbin, and that assumption is pretty much worthless 🙃

For what it’s worth- I run all of my glocks Gen 4&5 models 19-34 including 45 and 19x in my 6390 rds. With or without the x300 and tlr7. The holster locks on the slide port not the light like passive retention holsters. The true north MHA can direct mount to the holster or the safariland QLS system which is Q19 and 22 model numbers on their site.

Do you have an owb with some type of active retention? I looked on your website and didn’t find anything. I’m not wanting some gigantic set off duty rig, just owb + something else but still want a somewhat close to the body for.

Nope. Active is duty driven. Overt use. Concelament is exactly that. A holster that is “close to the body” has no room for the after market parts to work. They are often spring loaded, so they need stand off from the body to operate. You also have to consider body mechanics. The shoulder can only go so far up. Now trying to defeat a retention device on the draw. I have been bending holsters for over 10 years. Close to the body. There is little to need for a device. If you really wanted it you could use bungee retention with a holster that was made for it.

@@rdrgear Safariland does have a low ride ALS holster. I wear one 5 days a week as armed security. The model is the 7378 or the 7379. I wear mine with the soft rubber/plastic belt loop. It carries closer to the body at the same height as a regular duty holster on the UBL. Just no jacket slot.

@@jamesmaze3841 that’s surprising, considering the hole pattern on the (78) 6378 and 7378 come from the factory mounted to a universal paddle. With the hole pattern roughly 1.5” higher on the 7378. It sit lower on the UBL hanger by the same length of 1.5”. This maybe different on the DFA leg mount since there are multiple mounting holes on the DFA. With the majority of LEO’s going to outer LBV Load Bearing Vests. The standard stand off, or even adding a QLS. Quick Locking system. Has been the norm, from our experience. That added stand off clears the external carrier.

I don’t agree with the idea of wearing a belt cause of Ambient conditions. Thus dry fire in those conditions . There’s a whole solution of product to help carry slim to medium sized guns in any weather .

I highly doubt they will. Those holsters are extremely complex. The cost to make them is high. So the number of units they have to sell to cover. The ROI is not there. Safarjland already has the the 6000 series for the 2011 both the 4.4 and 5"

Doesn't make sense to me, do a ton of training with a duty style holster if your day to day lifestyle doesn't include a duty holster. Having a duty holster, as a civilian for a worst case scenario situation is fine, But the amount of training time you should spend using it should be just enough to be familiar with it, unless times change and things take a turn for the worse. Outside of that, spend the bulk of your time, money and energy training with the guns, holsters and gear you carrying everyday or keep at the ready for home defense. That is what you are most likely to use. But, that concept doesn't lend itself well to those selling holsters and gear. Just what makes sense to me.....

Who ever that instructor is, he needs to grow up. I'm a LEO and firearms instructor when lm teaching a LEO class l wear my LEO gun belt, when l'm teaching civilians l wear a Bravo Concealment holster and two mag holder on a old HTC belt, but l teach and run the range wearing my red shirt and 5.11 shorts 90 percent of the time because it is hot where l am. My opinion it doesn't matter what holster you wear, just have fun, be safe, and train safe. "Shooting is fun".

I find myself really ambivalent on the quick draws at the range. I go to the range to train the shooting portion. If people wanna train IWB draws and weird angles then that would be better trained in my opinion with inert trainer guns at a dojo. Rule #1 of gunfight. Bring A gun. The holster just there to carry it to the fight. Holster has to fit the task. I would not want to do ISPC or tactical match style shooting with AIWB holster. Probably wouldn't want it for a nightstand gun belt/gun holster either. Driving and sitting requires something else still.
