Alt Rider Skid Plate - DO NOT BUY for your 2021 Africa Twin

On this episode of Dusty's Garage, I install the Alt Rider Skid plate on my base 2021 Honda Africa Twin. The only problem is that I do not recommend this product due to its fit and finish. I made it work but I would not recommend this product to other Africa Twin Riders due to the issues you will see in this video.

@@Dustin-Holstein looks like he had some issues on the installation but I’ve watched several videos of other crash bars for the Africa Twin and it does seem like a good design of the alt Ryder is a little bit better than like the SW Motech. I was wondering what your thoughts were after having spent some time with it as a follow up? I think just about every crash bar I’ve seen are Wayover priced in my opinion but that’s pretty much par for the course.

@@flyingrv6 my crash bars are from Heed in Poland. Fit perfectly the first time around. I don’t think my skills are to a point where I could put the skid plate to the rest. The one thing that stands out is that it protects the oil filter much more thoroughly. The one leaves a tiny bit exposed.

I think you need to fully remove the crash bars first. Also you do not tighten the bolts that you put in first. You get them in and then the others. After that you tighten ALL the bolts down. Also, a ratchet would have saved you a lot of the agro you went though.

From experience, either you've missed a step or you purchased the wrong product. The AT has a couple trim options and it's entirely possible you made an error in selection. I'd bet you missed a step. I've got thier products and the installation and fit and finish were spot on. I could be wrong however. Thanks for the video in any case.

exactly, would be good to have an opening for oil changes! Why not, wont weaken that thing too much

I’ve got this for 2021 L model. No dramas at all. I was heart broken B & B didn’t make their product for the 1100 as they’re the best in the business. Looked at heaps of others. Altrider had the best design. Fitted like a charm. Saying that, I don’t have crash bars yet! I think the heed bars you have may not help?

I wasn’t happy with the Heed mounting design. Your video confirmed that. Good luck. Awesome bike. Leaves my old KTM 990, Super Tenere and T7 for dead. Good to see Honda back in the game!

read that alt rider plate just isnt compatible with the heeds. i have the heeds and ordered the crosspro plate as i heard its a good fit

I have the same year and model bike and a AltRider skid plate ,,, no issues

I'm pretty sure your issue in fitting the alt rider bash plate was leaving the OEM heat shield on the catalytic converter.

@@Dustin-Holstein I recently fitted the same alt rider bash plate and there's simply not enough room for the heat shield over the catalytic converter.

I wouldn't buy that bash plate ...BUT if I were you I would simply drill an over sized hole under the drain plug so you dont need to remove it each oil change... Not sure why Alt Rider WOULDN have already done that.......

Ummmmm. Why did you tighten the counter sunk screws? Bad move. You are spending more time fighting your tools than using them correctly
